Homage to the great ones. 2005-06-28 21:28:42 Reply

I've been on newgrounds since the audio portal was born - and I have seen many very talented people come and go - people i considered rivals, people I considered friends, and most of all - people I looked up to and strived to be like. Sadly the sands of time have caused a lot of these people to be either forgotten or faded legends..

when I first started Paragon_X9 seemed like a good musician. There was also Dreamscaper dominating the trance charts - Evil-Dog was tearing up the punk charts, czer was doing his thing, xbrav was competing with me in the vg portal, which was fun but things got screwy.. DJ_Draconum made appearances in the video game and trance and techno genre.. as well as other djs that I can no longer remember the names of..

oxxenking and italiondragon were around a lot - sometimes ragging on me for not trying my best.. ZeRo_BaSs was one of the people I looked up to - he was always in my portal making amazing stuff - and still occasionally does.. nobody knew who I was but that was ok - The portal was fun, and everyone was friendly, and most of all - EVERYONE LOOKED OUT FOR EACH OTHER.

I learned of others as I progressed, like RAGEVI and crud, and others came along too, like Kingbastard, Rucklo, and most Recently, B0UNC3, people who I listened to and thought "wow those people really have TALENT!"

This is a thread to pay homage for those that gave us inspiration. All those that I have mentioned above (and some that I have forgotten) are all people that have inspired me - and have made my stay on this site so enjoyable.

This thread is also a place to tell people of older musicians that everyone might have forgotten as their songs have been downrated to the extent that they will be buried forever - I was just talking to bjra about dreamscaper and he didnt even know who he was - that makes me sad. These people are my elders - and YOUR elders. They paid their dues - and they should be respected. Newgrounds should have a hall of fame where those who were once great go.. Most of the names in the respected musicians audio player in the ngs magazine are now gone.. replaced by people that I dont know and frankly some people that shouldn't be there.

So yes, if youve been here a while, and you remember - list those that Inspired you - and even if you're new - list the people as well.

Nice post Chrome... I started uploading in Feb 05. There's been some good metal artist who have dissapeared. Jarrydn, who rarely makes a new tune for NG, The Ghoul (Grim_T) who stopped uploading because of zero voters, Gorgoroth, who made kick ass guitar solo's, some dude who's name begins with D.... I think it was Daylight's end. The only reason I'm at the top in the Metal section all of the time, is because these awesome musicians have gone.

hey i remember Grim_T and Gorgoroth... man its so sad - if paragon was still submitting in the vg portal, as well as oxxen_king, italian dragon, dj_dragonum, dreamscaper and ZeRo_BaSs - I think the whole experience would just be a lot more fun. But theyre all gone - off doing other things - off on other sites - maybe occasionally submitting a song here - its like looknig down a giant empty viking hall and picturing the room filled with bawdy laughter and horned helmets.. makes me wanna cry..

I know what you mean. I'm the main guy in the Metal Portal, because there are just too few of us. Being the only regular submitter to metal is like playing BattleField 2 offline. It's fun, but without serious competition, it isn't as good.
One guy however, Sticktorture_United, is producing some really awesome stuff. So, finally some life is coming into the Metal section. I hope!

i think this is a very appropriate post, maybe if we remember our elders everyone will stop being arrogeant drawp it like itz hot self voting 5 assholes of they take time to realize ng isnt about anything but fun, and friendly competition, but latey the audio portal has become corrupt, so remembering our roots might help us come to terms with ourselves.

go canada.
you know what forget the arrogent thing i just said, this post has made me come to terms with my arrogance so instead of canada i say "go earth" this post has helped me with my arrogancy, thx chrono

(dam i good at examples :p)

Before coming here, my main influences were Eurasian artists such as: Paul van Dyk, ATB, Astral Projection, Infected Mushroom... I must admit I didn't expect to see much good music coming from amateur artists who are part of an animation site, but people like ParagonX9 and Dreamscaper quickly proved me wrong. I accquired two new sources of inspiration on this site. ParagonX9's music led me into the world of Drum N' Bass, then a while later I discovered an artist who calles himself "cycerin", who's music is very close to me, and supplies me with ideas in times of artistic draught.

It is most probable that, subconsciously, artists like Chronamut, Dreamscaper, B0UNC3, Rucklo, monkeybullman and many I don't have the patience to mention have also helped me sustain a hefty and perpetual stream of art. I have had a great level of productivity these past few weeks, but sadly did not submit anything I made. I am still waiting for either Tom or Wade Fulp to delete my music so I can rename my account "Extracy" and start anew, throwing out some of my less ambitious works and putting in 4 megabyte clips of latest pieces. I'm sure the influence of this great site and its 'inhabitants' will be audible.

I do admit, i thought at first, NG is all animation, and the music is going to be shite, but then when i heard quality techno and metal it got me interested. Current favourites monkeybullman/kingbastard rucklo and dj runaway, neighbourhood plastic and ljcoffee, psybot, johnny beat. You guys arent arseholes, some are constructive and even those who dont even talk to me are a great yardstick to measure myself up to.
Glaisne, you nearly make me cry. Even though your miles away, the irishness makes me think of one of my spiritual homes ( the others being holland, jamaica and japan, but only cos i want to live in those places, no heritage :)

It really only occurred to me recently that if i cant find many experimental fans in real life, i should be able to find them on the net :)

"wow those people really have TALENT!"

I'm sure that in addition to all of those mentioned already, there are many MANY awesome artists who have long since moved on and I think it's nice that those of us who remember them do so fondly. I also think that alot of the currently active people are very telented - some in different areas abviously but talented nonetheless.

Pay homage? - Sure! - by all means. and one other thing that Chronamut wrote:

and most of all - EVERYONE LOOKED OUT FOR EACH OTHER.

With that in mind maybe the best way to pay homage to the talented, would be to try to do the same for each other now. Most of us here seem to get along pretty well - a few flaring tempers aside - We should try to keep it that way.

On influence - NG is a completely separate animal - Obviously we have each had external influences prior to discovering the AP, but I get a LOT of my current influence from other people here - You guys.

monkeybullman, err.. um... or is Kingbastard now?, SonicEclipse, Apoplexia, Neighbourhood Plastic, Poetic Reven, yes, Chronamut you too! and you too PiePie - all of these people have to one extent or another inspired me and caused me to think about composition just a little bit differently.

And not just those guys - blanket sorry goes out to those who I haven't yet named personally - but if I've left you a review then you've most likely been an influence as well - no matter how slight.

Liljim wrote about the Clock Crew (I think - don't start flaming me if I'm mistaken) and how they are so successfull because if nothing else, they all stick together... I'm not suggesting that any audio portal club or crew be formed - not at all - but I think that the same spirit of cooperation would definitely help.

And with all of that said, my final point is those goddamned zero voters!! :)

Nah.. jk .. Just remember this thread the next time that we start arguing over whatever nonsense comes up at the time...

It's lonely and cold in the Bluegrass section...

Huh? ... did anyone just hear that??? who the hell? :)

Sorry Denvish - know what's funny - last post I mentioned something about liljim talking about the clock crew and now that I think about it, it may have been you!

I promise - in the next day or so I'll get over and listen to some of your stuff - Bluegrass just isn't normally my thing but I can definitely appreciate talent.

Paragon, Dreamscaper, and Helix definitely did a good job setting the standards, I often sought after their music, not only to get a taste, but to get a feel, what was good, even though I never traveled that path.

Now people will look for the names, so here we go

Chronamut, offered some good inspiration, never satisifed to let his music rest on it's laurels, or anyone else for that matter. Having the guts to shut down premature egos is a saver.
Bjra, not treading into my path, but definitely had potential in the start.
Pandora Tranquil, one of my old friends as well, extremely motivated and preserved.
Sonic Eclipse, I'd spoken to him a few times, impressed with his music, an intellectual with more then one way to his ideas.
monkeybullman/kingbastard, no explanation necessary. :D
Pink Floyd, completely doing his own thing, I mean this in a good way, plays like a mofo and never takes himself too seriously.
Khuskan, heard some of his material in an awesome game, then delved into it, considered him my twin, but never really got in contact with the little bastard.
Rucklo, no comment.

I have no rivals. Didn't really look up to anyone, my music isn't even close to anything else here on newgrounds. These are all some of my favorite people, and their music is responsible for me even being interested in the audio portal. More to follow.

don't feel too badly piepie - you're still fairly new - this thread is mostly to mention the older musicians here on newgrounds.

And denvish I'm pretty sure I reviewed one or 2 of your songs... maybe I'll check out more.

And also thanks to all of those ppl that ever mentioned me - while that isnt the reason why I started this thread - it is very moving to know that I have inspired ANYONE or help them on their path to musicness.

Hopefully I can get those legends that I mentioned to post in this thread..

The thing is, the only song of mine I'd class as Bluegrass is Goin' Down To Newgrounds, where I deliberately used that style because it was a joke song. A lot of my other stuff is acoustically-based fingerpicking, from ragtime to folk - but if you pick a song at random, it could be heavy rock (Legless), classical (Misty Blue), dance (A.R.T.), blues (Out Of My Mind), ragtime (Ragtime Blues), or computer-based (Spook). I have stuff in 8 different genres, but, because I don't specialise, I guess my name doesn't get noticed to much over there.

I can't complain too much, though, my audio has been used in quite a few submissions (19 for Ragtime Blues alone), and that's what the AP is all about. So I'll quit me whingin' now.

I also forgot to mention Whirlguy in my list above - as well as lukey (cant remember his name came out with that song "deep in my mind"). Those 2 have vastly improved since i've been on this site - and might have been here as long as me - I can't remember..

and thanks for mentioning me erkie - if you were on this site 2 years ago who knows ppl might be mentioning you too.

I see a lot of you people are greatly improving and I'm glad to see that. ^^

Ahhh the old days of the audio portal. I remember watching the audio page and refreshing it to see if anyone had uploaded anything new. It move so slowly :)

It was kinda cool when there were less people...you could stay on top for ages :D. I was the king of metal for a short time...but I just don't make music quickly enough. I've been on the audio portal for over 2 years, and i've got...15 or 16 songs uploaded, and most of them are pretty rubbish too :P.
