$250 for Best Games Jun. 13th, 2005 @ 07:23 PM Reply

Newgrounds was founded with the goal of delivering some of the best games on the internet. In the early days when HTML only allowed users to click pictures to load new pages, I created features such as Club a Seal where you could enjoy the limited amount of interactivity in a fun way. I was never an especially good artist or animator, so I worked hard to program and create games that would push the technology of web gaming to new limits.

In 2000, I won the award for Best Flash Games at the Flash Film Festival in NYC. I got to go on stage at the Hammerstein Ballroom and shake hands with Chuck D from Public Enemy! This was in July, just three months after we launched the automated submission system for the Portal and Newgrounds would forever transition from being my personal showcase to being the web's largest showcase of the global Flash community.

Something has happened in the five years since then, however. Newgrounds has become predominantly known for MOVIES! A majority of our submissions are movies and movies generally score on a higher curve than games. Every month, users select five $250 prize winners and a majority of those awards are also for movies.

It's time to take another step forward! Newgrounds has enjoyed growing success in the years following the dot com crash of 2000 and I want to keep giving more back to the artists!

Starting with the June winners, we will now be awarding $250 each to TEN WINNERS PER MONTH in two categories: 5 GAMES and 5 MOVIES. The end-of-month voting will remain the same, but winners will be divided by those categories when prizes are awarded.

So submit those games! There are 17 days left in June to be part of the running! This competition will also continue on a monthly basis for as long as we can afford it!

Winners will also receive an award certificate and NG t-shirt. Speaking of which, I better order more now if I'm gonna be giving out ten of them for June!

To top it all off, we will now be keeping the GAMES section up-to-date under our new content management system. Say goodbye to those outdated GAMES pages, your submissions will be catalogued and showcased from now on!

This is the game JohnnyUtah and I have been working on.

That's a great idea Tom. The games on NG definitely need to be showcased more. Making a funny little cartoon may take effort, but making a high quality game with good graphics takes twice the effort. It will be great to see what kind of games authors strive to create now that there is a nice goal to reach.

Sounds like a bunch of good ideas to me. Especially the division of Games and movies in the monthly prizes. Almost makes me want to get off my lazy ass and create some decent work.... almost.

Congrats on being able to do this. I just hope it motivates the right behaviour (quality flash) and not just more participation and submission (though both are good).

Yay! Up to date games section, finally. It makes going there much more worth while. The categories for the prizes (games and movies) is good too! I love playing games, and this should bring more games into the portal, seeing how they can last much longer than movies. But the best prize is the newgrounds t-shirt by far.

It's good to see that you're sticking to Newgrounds' roots. There are many games out there that deserve more recognition, but they get buried in the massive amount of awesome movies that are submitted as well. With this, the good games should get the attention that they deserve. It's also good to see that things are going so well that you can give away $2500 a month!

Great idea. I love seeing you give out so much to the flash creators. Even though I'm sure you can afford it, it's quite generous nonetheless. It's just great to see.

I like this, now I don't have to worry about putting just movies on my top five favorite submissions of the month.

Thats a great idea, but you should also update the button at the top of every NG page for games, and change it to Alien Honinid or something cool.

One of the best ideas yet Tom.

I think games are underappreciated because you can't suck at watching a movie.

Where as, if you suck at a game and get totally raped most people vote zero and ignore all of the hard work.

Hats off to you Tom

Say, when will the new collection pages be launched anyway? I'm waiting to see Magnetism in the puzzle section. And be on the lookout for my newest game due in the next 2 weeks or so! CELLS II Is coming your way! (I never submitted the original cells, it's not worthy)

You can't really base that from the statistics last month - since people only had five votes then - the first month that this will run, they will have ten votes. If people last month had have had 10 votes, the whole ranking list could have been dramatically different.

Try not to dwell on what "could have" been - there's no use in ever wondering, "what if things had have been different", it will only depress you. :)

Wait, wait. We're getting 10 votes now? I thought the number of votes was remaining at 5 based on how Tom addressed. it.

I don't know if I read that wrong but when he says it remains the same for voting I assumed that meant 5 votes overall. And then then prizes would be subdivided into games and movies.

I'd actually like it better with 10 votes, I just wanted to clarify my confusion. So which is it, 5 or 10 votes?
