Richard Pryor and Jerry Seinfield are two of my all-time favorites.
I was fortunate enough to have been able to see both Lewis Black and Wanda Sykes
Live, and both were a riot.

I am becoming more and more fond of Kenny Everett all the time.
Although Ian Hislop is a close second.

Man, i was coming up on the end of this thread and was disappointed with all the same people saying "Duh, i don't really know any other comedians, so i'll say the popular names of people i've seen in movies"... then someone mentioned Bill Hicks.
If you've ever heard Bill Hicks, not only is he funny, but you might learn something from the man.. too bad he's dead now.
This guy is the only comic i've seen snap at a heckler and walk around saying:
"Oh, i can do whatever i want because i'm a drunk cunt! "
How many comics do you know who got their legs broken in the back of a venue by three vietnam vets who didn't agree with their views? That's gotta count for something :p
Bill Hicks all the way!

Billy Connolly.
Peter Kay's funny too, but with him essentially being a regional British act I don't think he'll get anywhere near the same worldwide publicity as Connolly.

George Carlin. his books, routines, and thoughts are fucking hilarious. he's been doing it for like 50 years, and has been consistently brilliant. Jerry Seinfeld is also great.

Dylan Moran is awesome. I used to have most of his "Monster" dvd memorized and I still quote it with my friends. Bill Baily has some great stuff too.
My favorite comic of all time would probably be Eddie Izzard, the executive action transvestite British comic. He's great. Don't judge him until you see his show. I can't wait for Just for Laughs so I can see him live. Dylan Moran is also performing, but I'm too poor to see them both.
