Onion skinning w/ sprite animation?

Alright. For sprite animation, I went to about ever turtorial site I could find (including the ones on Newgrounds). Of course, for frame by frame animation (which I believe this is), I'd be using onion skinning. I guess the process of onion skinning, which I know is overlapping, is quite confusing. I have several questions concerning this subject.

1.) Let's say for example I'm doing a Mario sprite character. Would I want to make his movement (one frame in one position, another in another) in a movie clip? And have that going off while I move him across the intended area?

2.) Providing that's what I do, then I take it I want to continiously switch out the standing still mario sprite, with the movie clip when I intend for Mario to move?

3.) A problem I seem to notice with onion skinning is that when I do the overlapping, the old outline stays in place when I play the movie. Is there a step I'm missing that I should know about?

Over all. These are the problems I've been encountering when attempting to try onion skinning (which I'd like to do, because it seems to be the best choice for frame by frame animation). Any simple to detail answer to these questions, or explanation to onion skinning would be well appreciated.

Lol dumb Question but when using Onion skinnin Rofl Make sure when playin the Movie Back to yaself Uve Unchecked Onion Skinnin otherwise it looks like ure movie is Fucked. If u already knew that then im Currently Doin Sprite Animation 2 and using Onion skinning. After a while ull get used to it + Ignore Gi-go me thnks he/shes on her period 8P
