For some reason, my Wi-Fi is screwing up. Like every hour, I lose my connection and have to disconnect, then reconnect. I don't know if it's the internet (I have DSL), the modem (Linksys), the router (D-Link), or the built-in wireless card (802.11g). It's not causing my computer to die, but it's a large inconvenience if I'm posting or playing Halo. Does anyone know what the problem is.
PS - I don't have spyware, so it's not that.
I've got the same problem, its your computer...
My brother and I can be next to eachother, and I'll have to reconnect maybe 10 times over the course of 2 hours, and he doesn't have to once.
I have no idea why, it happens with both my netgear and linksys routers.

It's my computer? Would you happen to have a Compaq?
Sony Vaio... =\
my suggestion - buy a 10 dollar access point for your room, and plug an ethernet cable whenever you're going to be sitting down for more than an hour or so.
(our house is wired, but theres no jacks in the basement; so no TV and internet without wifi)

I have no idea what a Wi-Fi is,but if it allows you to take a dump and be on the internet at the same time,it's gotta be good...will someone tell me what this wondrous wi-fi is?
Time to post your exact setup... What modem is it (model, as well as make) and what router (model, as well as make)? Also, are you on a laptop, or a workstation? What type of wireless card do you have? Make? Model? Connection type (for the wireless card)? Is it PCI, PCMCIA, or USB, or something other?
The more specific you are, the better help people can provide.
Oops - forgot to ask - what sort of encryption do you have going on with your wireless router? Do you filter Mac addresses? If not, why not (to both)?

I had a similar problem with my WIFI when I wasn't running an encryption at all. It would show connected but wouldn't allow me to do anything.
Make sure you've set up a WEP key and have your connection secured. It makes things not only secure, but in some cases (like mine) actually work. Otherwise, I'm not super knowledgable about these sorts of things, so I'm near useless.
The problem could be that your router is resetting because it is receiving malformed packets. This could be from any type of interference in the 2.4 Ghz spectrum, including microwaves and cordless phones. Way to overcome this? Get rid of the cordless phones or use a Cat5 wire instead of being wireless.
the same thing happens to me my router is wireless g linksys 2.4 g router with 4 port swich and i have a wireless g internet card

Whoops, I don't have a Linksys, I have a Speedstreem 5100 Ethernet ADSL Modem.
and what router (model, as well as make)?
D-Link AirPlus XtremeG Wireless Router (Set for 108 MBPS)
Also, are you on a laptop, or a workstation?
Laptop

Built-in Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN with a PCI Connection.

I figure that the one of the top developers of NG should be able to help.

Don't count on it - particularly if you don't answer some of the other questions I asked. I'm not a hardware guy... So I'm no expert in this field.
Encrypting the connection and filtering by MAC address can really improve your day. So do that, if you're not doing it already, and make sure you answer the other questions asked.
maybe u accidentally pissed on it. you have to take that into consideration.

What's the firmware version on your DLink? I'm looking up and early revisions of the firmware resetted under a lot of wireless strain/interference. It seems that later versions of the firmware for this router doesn't have as much problems with resetting when there's a lot of interference. Here's a link.... Link

That should be fine - if you're constantly dropping packets, then you may want to consider purchasing an access point (that has to be hardwired) or purchasing something you can use as a repeater (to boost the broadcast the signal from the router to your machine).
Also, as Ravens_Grin said - make sure you're running the latest stable firmware version for your router/modem.

Oh well. I reconnected back to my modem for now, and I'll try to fix it later. Thanks for the help though.
If you pick up this month's Mac Addict it tells you how to improve your wifi signal with a pringles can.
