Blacks voting rights ending?

Crazy but true. Camille Cosby (Bill Cosby's wife) made a reference about the Voting Rights Act in a letter.

Apparently our right to vote will expire in 2007.

The Voters Rights Act signed in 1965 by Lyndon B. Johnson was just an "ACT." It was not made a law.

In 1982, Ronald Reagan amended the Voters Rights Act for another 25 years. Which means in the year 2007 we could lose our right to vote.

Does anyone realize that African Americans are the only group of people who require PERMISSION under the United States Constitution to vote! In the year 2007, Congress will once again convene to decide whether or not Blacks should retain the rights
to vote (crazy but true).

In order for this to be passed, 38 states will have to approve an extension. This is ludicrous! Not only should the extension be approved, but also the ACT must be made a law. Our right to vote should no longer be up for discussion, review and/or evaluation.

If this were not to pass, it would not be a good day to be around G.L. I'm slapping everyone. For no reason at all too.

I make light of the situation, because I seriously doubt that Blacks will lose the right to vote. On two reasons:

1. I truly believe in the greater good all people posses and think that though everything is not right with the world, we've come farther than this. I think people will pass this because it is the right thing to do and should not be an issue.

2. Although I would like to think everyone is bigger than this, I'm not stupid. Yet it would still get passed for a scapegoat at the least. It would be too much civil unrest if this weren't passed. With so much going on with America now anyway, this would only hurt us as a nation. We would look bad to others and our nations leaders definitely don't want to lose the support of a whole race of people as well as others.

I just think this is ridiculous that this even has to be discussed. I mean, we went to war over possible weapons of mass destruction. Then decided to liberate a group of people from a tyrant and grant them democracy.

When here, we haven't even fixed a problem that should have been taken care of years ago. Maybe I'm just crazy, but......I'm just saying........

This could have went in the politics, but I wanted the majority of people to see this. So I also apologize for that.

I so look forward to the day, where we can just be people. I respect all by their personality and that is the only trait that stands out to me.

I'm not too concerned about racist or ignorant remarks, but you'll most likely be banned and you'll be revealing yourselves. So, I'll just make a mental note to myself who you are. :)

I just thought I'd bring this to people's attention and I have the utmost respect and love for everyone here. Hopefully, one day we can be past this.

There's a good chance that 50 out of 50 states will approve of an extension. Blacks have the right to vote...I doubt many people have the balls to challenge that now. Racists are no longer the majority.

This does kind of worry me. They already tried to deny blacks' right to vote in the 2000 election in Florida, so who knows. I bet that even if the law passes in 38 states, not all 50 states will vote to extend blacks' voting rights. I bet some states in the South will vote no.

But there I mean it has to pass, even if it does get some opposition. There would be too much uproar if they ddn't renew blacks' right to vote.

As much as certain groups which I'll keep unnamed would like to see african-americans lose the vote, logic would say there's no way it won't be renewed. Could you imagine the riots and protests otherwise??

Yet, the real issue is that the matter was not taken care of before. I still think something should have been done than to just extend the time frame.

To me, it just seems like, well just keep putting it off and if time expires they'll still be able to vote.

I think it is sad that no official thing was done to even get rid of this thought. Yes, no official thing has been done either, or else there would be no threads like this or even sites that break the rumor of it.

That is my point. People shouldn't have to wonder about this in the first place. It should have been dealt with a long time ago.

Well, it isn't something to worry too much about because there are stipulations behind it that can't really keep us(blacks) from voting.

I just thought it was messed up that nothing was done to even stop people from thinking this today.

They basically just put it off and made sure that there was a way around it. Instead of clearing everything up officially.

No, I know of UNCG though. It is a good school. I have friends that go there, but I'm actually schooling overseas.

I go to the University of Maryland University College Asia Division (UMUC) here in Okinawa, Japan.

UNCG has some good professors though. Not a bad school at all.

This is law. It's in the Constitution. Any act to attempt to deny blacks the right to vote solely on the basis of race can be taken up with the Supreme Court.

AMENDMENT XV
Passed by Congress February 26, 1869. Ratified February 3, 1870.

Section 1.
The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude--

Section 2.
The Congress shall have the power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.
