Kyle Russel, 16, committed suicide by hanging himself in his basement after, reportedly, spending too much time playing the game "Final Fantasy XI". According to Russel's friends and mother who witnessed him playing the game, he spent all of his time in the land known as "Promyvion", a dark, depressing area filled with flesh eating zombies and giant spiders.
In a suicide note Russel left in his room, he wrote how depressed the land of "Promyvion" made him feel and how the atmosphere of the place made him feel like nothing would ever get any better.
In his final note, the Palo Alto High School sophomore made particular mention of one "quest" in which an entire nation is brutally slaughtered by "The Empty" who were searching for Bahamut. In this particular quest, the nation knew nothing of the aforementioned Bahamut, but were murdered anyway.
"This is the material our children are being exposed to on a daily basis," says Russel's mother, Stacy. "They play these games loaded with depressing content, it's enough to make anyone want to end it all."
Stacy Russel, a math teacher at Palo Alto High School, is petitioning to have content in all video games reviewed and if possible censored.
"We have so much hate and depression in our everyday lives, children don't need anymore of it in these games," says Russel.
