ok. i dont know if any of you have heard of this. but here in upstate NY a anti-gay priest is planning on causing trouble during an anual festival in a near by city, Plattsburgh.

every year there is this thing called the "Mayor's Cup" where there are sail boat races on lake champlain and free concerts and alchohol free festival atmosphere around the city.

this anti gay group wanted to set up a booth, much like the local businessed do. but they were from out of state. and pititioning to the only openly gay mayor in the state of NY.

so, they were denied, not beacuse of their hate spreading ways, but because they wanted a politically oriented booth, which is against the bylaws of the mayor's cup. so after failing horribly in some stupid local court battle, the group decided to protest at area churches and around the carnival.

ok, i can understand if you dislike people and you want to get your message accross. what i want to know is why they would just spend so much time trying to ruin some many people's good times. hell, even if they were just a young republicans they would have been denied due to political affiliation. politics is not allowed at the festival so that it can be fun for everyone.

ignorance and hatred is everywhere, and we can't stop that. but i see absolutly no gain in making people hate you more then they probably already do. they aren't going to accomplish anything with their protests...other then probably get the shit beat out of them.

They are like mosquitos. They are there to be swatted by the sane-thinking people. Don't feel angry at them. Feel bad for em', because they're the laughinstock of the world.

In a way, being denied the ability to set up a booth is actually beneficial for the protestors. Obviously, there's more news to be milked out of the story for what some people would call a deprivation of a right to assemble than if the group had just been given a booth--which is important, since one of the key reasons for protesting anything is to get your message out there. Instead of just being able to give out their propaganda at the booth, now they have the opportunity to spread it throughout the nation via the news.

So often times it happens, that we live our lives in chains, and we never even know we had the key...

they've been going around the country attempting and picketing at such events.
its not that the were denied to try and stop them, they were simply stopped because of already set rules for having a booth. there is no religious, political or any of the such type booths in the festival. they perposely came up here, in a city where a homosexual is in the mayor's office and decide to cause trouble.

its ironic that they want gays persecuted...yet use all means of our freedoms in our laws to do it.

I wonder if you would feel the same about a homosexual activist group being denied participation in some fair in the south?

Why did the protesters have to ruin everyone's good time at the republican national convention?

Why can't the WTO just have a God damn meeting?

This wouldn't be the Westboro Baptist Church, would it?

Charming individuals, to be sure. Well within their rights, though; and to be quite honest, they help more than they hurt. People can see how hateful they are, especially when 6 year olds are holding signs and screaming things like 'All fags burn in Hell!' with angry, twisted faces.

I understand that. But for them to set up protests around an event is much more effective and much more headline-grabbing than to go there at all. Even if they made a booth there that the city allowed them to set up, it would still garner less news than when they go stand out by the roads and make a fuss.

They perposely came up here, in a city where a homosexual is in the mayor's office and decide to cause trouble.

Of course they did. The protest would be useless if they didn't. What's the point of protesting in area with people of like mind as you? Pro-lifers don't protest outside maternity wards, they protest outside abortion clinics. Greenpeace doesn't protest near marine biology research ships, they protest near whaling fleets. Democrats don't protest outside the Democratic convention, they protest outside the Republican convention. Likewise, it wouldn't have made any difference if these people had went to protest in an anti-gay community, nor would anybody have cared.

its ironic that they want gays persecuted...yet use all means of our freedoms in our laws to do it.

Yes, it is. But I'm just trying to clarify their agenda, not support it.

No pics. I've seen other people that do that with their kids though, when I march in the Pride Parade. It makes me sad.

I agree with Befell, they have Freedom of Speech, they can say whatever they want, just as long as it doesn't break the law (a threat would be an example of this) just like all those protesters that are against the WTO and the war

eh--

I've noticed I'm a whole lot more resilient (callous?) to these hate things-- it's actually a whole lot of fun.

"Love thy neighbor, love thy enemy"
That's what I say...

Lovely pic--
One for the records.

Not racist...

If I'm reading this right, they were denied because they wanted to set up a political booth, not because people disagree with their message. Yes, they have freedome of speech, they weren't denied access or admittance to the festival, just the permission to set up the politically themed booth.

Man, Befell...you are so my hero. You need to take various up and coming republicans under your wing, and train them in your ways.

Really, though. If the shoe was on the other foot, the other side would be complaining just as much. Actually, if the shoe was on the other foot, people would be crying that 'A minorities'/group of peaceful protester's civil liberties were being stepped on.

i woulden't call it whining. your choice of words give me the impression that you enjoy pravoking people. oh well.

either way. i find is sickening and just plain wrong that a group that flies under the flag of a religious institution which "represents" jesus christ would use ignorance and hate. the opposite to their basic ideology.

but sadly, there are assholes like that. the ignorant spread their flame of hate and make bonfires out of it whenever they can.

one would assume that one day we can somehow get past all this hate.

could one use this as a metaphor and you are saying that homosexuals are ruining this country simply for being homosexual? or that the city of plattsburgh disurves it simply because it has a gay mayor?

ok..because i dont think that he quite understood the possible meaning behind his post. which would be a tad bit scary. though, i would have some questions.

have you ever had the urge to sit down and ask, without some huge argument or spitefull rant, a person who is a bigot exactly what they think abotu things?

i enjoy talking with the local preist (my dad is pretty religious) i dont push my opinion on him, i just ask him straight questions about his faith. he's really cool about it and asks me some of the same things.

i know its probably not plausible to really have a civilised conversation with such radical people...but it would be kind of interesting if you could

so true. but like with deeply religious people. the priest i was talking to, he's a very smart man. it was interesting to find out what exactly made him so religious.

and there are still inteligent people who carry prejudice...they are just out of the way.

to find what makes people like taht tick would be the day hitler rises out of hell, assfucks the queen of england and spawns the antichrist who becomes dictator of the world.
