End of the world (as we know it)! 2005-03-18 09:22:30 Reply

Well, I have just been reading some theories on how the world will end, and I think it's total bollocks! Sure, we have enough nuclear devices to blow up the world many times over, but that doesn't mean it's going to happen. Yes, people may be stupid, but not THAT stupid. If you look at any of the major conflicts (and even terrorist attacks) over the past century, it is clear that they easily could have ended in the end of the world, as we know it. But they didn't. Why? Because of a little thing called human nature.

The -idle- Theory on Total World Destruction:
Many people are adament that the world as we know it cannot last, due to human nature. Well I say human nature is the ONLY THING keeping the destruction of the world at bay. The desire to survive outweighs all other emotions.

Discuss.

If there were no humans, there wouldn't be any possibility of the world being destroyed.

what about meteors?

I dunno though, the fact remains that regardless of destroying the world with weapons of mass destruction we're killing it everyday with the amount of pollution produced by us. Not pointing any fingers tho -points at america-

The world will end when the galactic hyperspace planning council demolish the planet in order to build a hyperspatial bypass.

It's the humans nature to survive. I doubt anyone would actually blow-up the world.

The world will end when there is no more porn because then there will be nothing for all those 13 year old emo kids to jack off too and they will all commit suicide. And kids are the future of a growing nation so eventually everyone will be dead, and the ants will take over.

Well, there is always the random element of natural disasters, but I was talking more about human-inflicted destruction.

As for pollution, yes, it's pretty bad. But it would have to get a lot more worse before it destroys us, as a species. Humans will always find a way to survive, no matter how bad it may seem.

The sun can still burn for 1 billion years, but yes the sun will explode. And even if it wouldn't explode, plants can't live without the sun so we won't have any air to breath, we will all die and the world will become one big desert. So the world as we know it will end for sure.

as idle said, humans will always try to find a way to survive. im sure we could build some epic domes to live in that were supplied via huge fans with oxygen. Plants can still grow with UV lights aswell i believe, if not UV then something else, i know there are lights that make plants grow, so inside our epic domes we could have epic greenhouses for plants to grow which would renew our oxygen and suchlike.

Ummm, how was I ripping off an R.E.M. song by using a similar title to one of their songs in an Internet thread about the end of the world? I'm confused (did you ever think I may have chosen that title for a reason?).

Also, if you don't like the subject, feel free to not post.
KTHX.

Yea but the capability of deystroying the world should be deystroyed,no1 should have that much power and there are crazy plp, just look at suicide bombers.

and like another guy said wut about meteors, there launching a program (forgt what its called, some old books name) there putting two satelites into orbit, one containing explosives and another with instruments to gather data, the second one surveys the meteor and sees how fast the explosive one needs to crash into it to make it miss earth

so the only real way earth could be deystroyed id by humans, unless somthing comes between now and 2015 when its supposed to be launched.

Ok, take the example of suicide bombers. In most circumstances, I would say they were following orders from a higher ranking person. Now think of how easily a terrorist organization could get their hands on a nuclear device, and say, detonate it in America. This in turn would start a chain-reaction of events, possibly ending with the destruction of the world. Why hasn't this happened yet? because it's clearly not benificial for either party involved. Thats why in this day and age, war is acceptable, unless it involves nuclear bombs. Nobody can use them, so their threat is pretty much 0%.

Bush has nothing to do with people getting their hands on nuclear devices. People seem to think that if Bush says something, then it must be true. Although it would be fairly easy if they had enough cash, the thing thats stopping them isn't Bush, or the Feds, or the United nations. It's simply impractical, as they couldn't use it anyway.

lololol you really think that?? Bush cant do shit about that. Why do you think they are sooo worried about terrorists and who has weapons of mass destruction? The fact of the matter is if you are from a particular part of the world, of a particular disposition and know the right people, its relatively easy.

does you have any links to news articles that say just because Bush says Iran can't use nuclear power means that they won't?

here
i quote:

"The US in 1967 had a peak stockpile of some 33,000 nuclear
warheads, and Russia in 1982 had some 45,000. Roughly
speaking, Britain, France, and China each have some 300
nuclear weapons; China has only about 20 warheads that can
be mounted on long-range rockets to reach the US. Note that
33,000 is one hundred times the number of warheads held by
any of these lesser of the five official nuclear weapon
states."

If you ever watched the news you would see shitloads of reports about other countries having nuclear weapons, it wasnt that long ago france were letting them off at hte bottom of the pacific ocean.

I know. Either people saying that such and such time the world will end or a prediction of an asteroid hitting the Earth in around ten years time, hundred years time. I think they're both bullshit. I'll only believe if there's an asteroid coming to hit the Earth when I see one from the sky, but I doubt there'll be any hitting the Earth yet.
