For people not near the border or for foreigners, I just want to say, Merlin here represents essentialy the majority of Canadians. I know it sounds like a stupid stereotype but what you see on these forums is the angry Canadians, hell, most Canadians are too polite to debate politics with someone.

That not only sounded like a stereotype jim, but it was...my point in this whole extravaganza is that essentially canadians and americans whether we like it or not are pretty much the same countries with a few differences. Sure the states has a bigger army...but Canada has free health care...we're just very similar countries with some different priorities...and you ask any canadian if we could have a bigger army we would, but what many americans fail to release is that Canada only has 10%, thats right 10% of USA's population and funding doesnt come all that easy. So yes America protects us canadians, but in return we provide many things (natural water for example, where canada is one of the few remaining countries with this resource). and sure The States could invade at any time but unfortunately thats not the way this world works. I think the reason why so many canadians "hate" the us is because they think some americans are "egotistical". Maybe I'm wrong here but Canadians...well we can be jackasses too. So instead of arguing about nonsense issues like (your army is bigger than my army, and my healthcare is better than your healthcare), we need to understand and respect our differences and learn that this is the way it is and while things may not be exactly the way EVERYONE wants them...they're pretty damn good the way they are....

You know, I said this a lot of pages behind, before losing the thread, but I'll say it again: it is only in recent history that Canadians and Americans have been on good terms. Whereas the U.S. revolted against the English Crown, we preferred to remain under it's reign. And that is true of both English and French Canadians, albeit for different reasons. Tensions were high between the U.S. and Canada for a long time, with Canada trying to protect it's fledgling economy from the southern giant and racing against it in the west order to stave off a possible encirclment. The U.S. actually tried to invade Canada twice, a long time ago, but still. And the final spark that lighted the powderkeg of the American Revolution (which couldn't have been won whitout the help of the french, by the way) came from the newly conquered province of Quebec!

Both society had a highly hierarchized cultures and a somewhat coldish sense of respect, compared to the less hierarchic and more meritocratic outlook of the americans coupled with their friendliness. Americans usually call each other by their first name, while canadians call themselves by their last name and french people "vouvoie" each other more, indicating of it's past hierarchy and it's colder tone. Not necessarily meanoing it's more difficult to be friends, just that we consider it a mark of respect. And that is only one of the many small differences between Canadians and Americans.

You know, we come from a colder and harsher country, and that tend to colour our acts. We know we aren't that shit when it's -40C for three months in a row, whitout counting the wind and the snow and the ice and all that. In the end, those who say U.S. and Canada are 'the same' with small differences is wrong. Our differences are simply closer and more well-hidden than most. We look the same, that doesn't mean we are. Distrust can run deep, especially between two neighbors.

As a US citizen, it would be nice if I could defend against these attacks on my homeland. Unfortunately, I have grown to hate it as much as anyone who has posted before me. If I could merely despise Bush, his administration, his Congress, his Supreme Court, and his interpretation of the Constitution, I could rest easier. Unfortunately, his views and acts are backed by a horrifying mass of my fellow citizens, which leaves me with little to be proud of. While I know this topic is quite broader than politics, it was the most valid argument in favor of Canada.
