there is one on makign youre own components, but not one on using the ones already in flash, just look through documentations of flash, its a bit complicated, but alot of the components are complicated to use

Denvish is away until tomorrow, so I'll try my best to be a stand-in. I know some of the new topics aren't merited, but I'll just put all the new topics in and Denvish can pop them out if he wants to.

Righty-ho. I've just updated the Notepad and off-site versions. A few tuts got dropped.

scottmale's because he didn't seem to fully understand the code he was posting
-Snail-'s unloadMovie because the subject was too limited.
mini-RPG because it appears to be stolen

From this page
Hoeloe's because random has been covered, plus it's becoming obsolete soon
I would have included mofongo's but there was no linkback to AS: Main in the first post

Thanks Rantzien for posting the updated list while I was AFK

What does everyone think of having tutorials sponsored? I've been thinking about it and I think it would be a good idea. It wouldn't be for much like 5-10 dollars per topic but it would entice people to share the information that they get. although AS MAIN covers ALOT of topics.

Yeah, unless things start getting REALLY detailed like:

AS: Autoformat button

I think it covers damn near everything, lol. Yet new stuff continues to come out. I want to write one, but I'm just stumped on what's left besides cut and paste engines.

Denvish, in you functions tute, you cover passing arguments a hair. Do you think that needs elaboration?

I would like to see an engine broken down. Reverse enginered. Or even a basics of what code should go in which clip tutorial. I personally use a clip that contains most of the actions off stage. That way I know where my code is.

Sponsoring AS: Main? Sounds like a good idea. If I hadn't written AS: Combo yet I could be rich, the thread was 5 pages long. :P

Even 5 bucks isn't bad for that, it's a good source of motivation to write more tutorials.

Will you also sponsor FOSS?

I notice there a a lot of Platform Game tutorials, but none of them are brilliant. They aren't really platform tutorials, more like main character engines. I, personally, would like to see a full Platform project, where it shows you the character engine, enemies, Background scrolling, everything.

That's the whole thing in AS main: It's not copied and paste.
Sure there are many people who make their AS threads codes which are easy to copy and paste, but a good AS:___ makes it too complicated to copy and paste.

No full game can be copied and pasted, outer MCs are needed unless it's API.

You should never give the entire code at the end, you need to explain each line and not give a final code, which will be easy to copy & paste and have a full game.

At 1/8/06 09:09 AM, theodor wrote: Thats why i prefer AS: Main to tutorials submitted to the portal. Because all the ones submitted to the portal are just "Copy this onto that" and so on... without much of an explanation of what the script is doing or how it works.

But do you think a tutorial which is only text (like AS: Main) would have a good score? No one wants to have a bad score just to help 1 or 2 of the rare viewers who would actually use that code.

People browsing the portal do not want to learn more, they want to play and watch movies.

Also, to nick: You said people could just submit good scoring games thanks to that does that mean you have something against the good score? Would you be happy if their copied and pasted games have a bad score? I wouldn't mind much, if copying a code would make them happy, then it's good for them, not bad for us.

Well, it's hard to explain what I mean. You said that you would be making a tutorial on how to make an enitire platform game with enemies and everything. Some people, would actually read what you had written and attempt to understand what you are saying and then use the code to make a game and submit it to the portal. Thus, probably deserving a good score.

But others will just come along copy and paste all the code where you tell them. Then they submit and get a relatively good score, but they haven't learnt anything.

I guess the same could be said for alot of tutorials on As: Main though, if people are silly enough to just copy and paste all the code then I guess it's their loss.

Eventually what I would like is to sponsor source code and keep it in a database that isn't readily available to everyone. Just quality developers. So there isn't a noob party with an engine when others could make quality games. Nothing against noobs but people have to put in thier lumps. Remember the flood of Jumping Engine For All? :) Most of the noobs don't know about AS Main so that is a good/bad thing I guess.

We are pretty far from doing any kind of tutorial sponsoring just so everyone knows, but I think it would be a good idea personally. And when we get going I'm sure it will come about.

I'm really swamped with getting visitor content and stuff at the moment. But in the next few months I will try to get a system set up that will let you create the pages like on flashkit so you can use more images and perhaps post flash in your tutorials. Then they would have to be approved so I don't get 100 ball bounce tutorials. Also I have to make sure the tutorials are not stolen.

Anyway keep up the good work guys!

i.e. the reason why i in the tutorials ive made for AS:Main (par one) i havnt included any source code that can really be used, so if someone wants to use it, they have to write their own code and CAN'T just copy and paste. Apart from the dynamic fps tutorial (which was only very small and basic concept anyways) i dont think ive given any usable source-code

With foss however, noobs are not well informed enough to work out what many of the examples do, let alone where to put them or how to implement them, so there's no huge danger I feel, so long as we don't start posting game engines with big labels on.

Hmmm. Well actually, if you look at my first post on page 2 of this thread:

At 6/27/05 07:22 PM, Denvish wrote: These will not be tutorials as such, just snippets of code with basic instructions on where to put them, and any links that seem relevant.

I know that sometime providing people with code that can be simply copy/pasted can actually cause more problems, when the user can't adapt it to fit their game. However, since I learnt by copy/pasting and adapting myself, I still feel that it's one of the best ways to teach AS. It's not as if most scripts can be used directly in a game anyway, they usually require some adaptation, and whether the user adapts it by themselves, or with help from Flash forum users, it's still a learning process.

I'm not going to knock anybody (like dELta) who is not willing to post complete game codes, but you have to understand that everybody has a different approach to learning. Taking an existing code and placing into your game is not necessarily a bad thing (so long as you don't then try and write an AS: topic with the same code, lol).

In other words, blehh.

Better get ready to update the list I suppose...
