The Scottish First Minister Henry McLeish was in New york yesterday claiming thet the British foot and mouth disease was "nothing to be conserned about", if that's the case then why are all the unaffected animals in farms surronding those affected being slaughtered? Is it just for fun?

Foot and mouth disease doesn't harm people. However, it does harm cattle, and can spread quickly and decimate entire herd of cattle, which could lead to a beef shortage, that is the concern. There is no disease transfer to humans.

There has been some dis-information surrounding Foot & Mouth, CNN falsly reported that it had infected Australian meat, It hasn't, CNN were forced to retract the statement but it's a bit fucking late now, Negative reports are noticed more than Retractions & then there's the people who saw the false claim but will never see the retraction.

Ouch...
That's horrible...
Retractions are so brutal... in newspapers, they take up one line in a small box next to an advertisment which no one notices.... ridiculous because the article is often at least 80 times as large...
So a 5 second retraction for a 6-7 minute misinformed report....

True, Foot & Mouth only has the worries of a couple of coldsores for humans, it doesn't have the same effect on livestock as BSE.
If the herd was left in isolation for a couple of weeks, it would recover from the disease. There are side effects, cows produce less milk, sheep don't put on as much weight, which doesn't seem as apocalyptic as the media make out. However, who would buy livestock that didn't produce to it's full capacity?
And since a 100 year old law is in operation, the livestock has to be destroyed, and farmers will get financial compensation for all the dead livestock.
Less milk, less meat, compensation: F&M looks like a bumper payday rather than a plague on the rural community.

I'm going to set the cat amongst the pigeons, and say it's just cause the English are a dirty race.
How do you hide ten quid from an Englishman? Under a bar of soap.
