Managed to catch the England-Italy match and to be honest I was a little underwhelmed with our performance. I'm obviously glad we won, but felt like we should have been more convincing than we were.

Yeah, you can only play as good as your opposition, but I didn't agree with the tactics - we should have run at them, because that's what Italy don't do and that's how to beat them.

Hopefully Ireland don't smash us to pieces.

We'll see. I've got a family do tonight, so I miss Wales' chance to spoil a French Slam, before Saturday's crunch between England and Ireland. Last match at Twickenham for the tourney, so let's make it count!

Same here near Worcester. Overcast, but that's pretty much the whole life mood at present, though I'm determined not to let it get me down.

And, solely for the purpose of eliminating the stereotype that English people only ever talk-slash-complain about the weather, I would like to offer something that was said this morning, in a feminism lecture, by a woman:

"Men are more rational and reasonable than women."

Now I'm not a sexist in any way shape or form... but if WOMEN are saying it, who am I to argue? ;P

Reasonable - Men will be told something and rather than get into an argument about it, they will give in.

Rational - If we've run out of carrots, we can't put any in the spag bol. Meh. *carry on cooking, perhaps spend 10 seconds looking in the fridge for a substitute, unsuccessfully*

See also for Women, they don't necessarily want to argue, but they have trouble turning down one, liking the last word (as do I :P) and if there were no carrots, they would make a really bad decision about the substitute for the carrots, decide that the meal was ruined and throw it all away. (I'm not that bad.)

A previous thread in general called "A Very English Post". Just before my time I think. Now begone with you.

It looked like we could win it for about 3 minutes after Wilko's drop goal. Heart breaking. :(

A Very English Post was started in 2002. We've been going on here for a long while.

Well, the sun is out today - is't nice and warm, so we've even got the window open. It's a sure sign that Cricket practice for the year starts tomorrow evening.

Yes, but Danny Care's moment of madness cost us the game. That cheating Mick who wouldn't just let go of the ball was to blame for that. We had a good chance of winning, if we'd have just taken the penalty then and gone forward like we were moving along nicely.

I'd agree with that.

That cheating Mick who wouldn't just let go of the ball was to blame for that.

Cheating or not, Care shouldn't have gone for him. Frankly, for a professional rugby player, that kind of shit is unacceptable; I played rugby for years and never once took out any frustration on an opposing player. He should have been more sportsmanlike.

Although, in Care's defence, the guy was probably TRYING to evoke that kind of reaction. Still, no reason to fall into the trap and lose the game because of it.

Oh well.

Scotland next... shouldn't be too difficult.

I'd agree with that.

Plus when he had a chance of going 12 English versus 3 Irish, he held the ball for the penalty, as opposed to running with it.

That cheating Mick who wouldn't just let go of the ball was to blame for that.

Yes, but would you have caught Danny Care doing the same the opposite way? Hardly. I think that the refereeing was a little lenient in the first instance and as a result, it happened again.

Scotland next... shouldn't be too difficult.

Well, the Scots are always up for the Calcutta Cup match. It depends on how much Andy Robinson wants to beat his old team :P

I think I've seen Scotland play convincingly maybe once or twice... but as we both know, I've not been following the rugby as closely lately, so for all I know they could have improved tenfold?

Doubtful though. ;)

Rugby aside, I'm about to leave to go to a meeting (in lecture format) to discuss potential topics and ideas for dissertations. Uni seems to have FLOWN by.

Might be a little far out for an English literature dissertation ;P

The meeting was fine though. They basically just got everyone doing English literature as a part of their course (single honours or joint honours) to sit down in a lecture theatre, gave us a few handout sheets and ran us through the entire process.

There were some people, who, even after everything was explained to them, STILL couldn't grasp some of the most simple details. Sometimes I wonder how these people actually get into university.

But yeah, I reckon I'm going to write my dissertation on Samuel Taylor Coleridge's letters. The guy was a really interesting poet who struggled with an opium addiction.

So F1 is on again. Can't see Button keeping his title as Ferrari and Red Bull look pretty strong. Would be nice to see Schumi on the podium again, probably won't be long before he makes that car his bitch. Also, it looks like Beckham is out of the world cup with a bad injury. He must be properly gutted.

Did Button even deserve it last year? He seemed to be totally shit in the second half of the season.

Indeed. And now it means there is no other option than to have a tiny winger with pace who constantly loses the ball without putting in a decent cross.

Or, like, Milner or Young will get the right hand position.

I seem to remember a Weebl & Bob episode that revolved around struggling with an Opium addiction. Rather funny, but I appear to have lost the link...

Yes, but I wouldn't rule McLaren out. I think that the Bahrain GP proved that this season will be a procession, for the most part of the races, with no fuel strategy at all. It also proved that Alonso is a much better driver than Felipe Massa, which was a moral victory.

Would be nice to see Schumi on the podium again, probably won't be long before he makes that car his bitch.

He sucked, because he finished behind his teammate. Rosberg is not as good as his dad and Schumacher should have stayed retired.

I personally hope that Schumacher ends this farce and leaves the sport alone. Ironic really that he's rejoined the sport, just as it becomes boring again.

Also, it looks like Beckham is out of the world cup with a bad injury. He must be properly gutted.

Boo hoo. At least Stewart Downing should get a chance to replace him in the England Squad.

Yeah, he drove the better races, particularly his masterful drive in Brazil.

Shaun Wright-Phillips needs regular club football. He appears to be surplus to Mancini's plans

Or, like, Milner or Young will get the right hand position.

Young is left midfield. End of. Milner or Downing could slot into centre or right nicely for England.

But isn't Downing left footed? Surely Milner or Young are both far more suitable.

Or play Rooney there and he can just run back and forth; scoring from his own crosses...

My Six Nations 2010 commentary ends with this:

Disappointing match against France yesterday. They would have won the tournament either way, but considering how strongly we played towards the beginning of the match it was a definite let down.

The ref was pretty poor, but we can't blame it all on that. I think the worst aspect was Johnson's poor substitutions in the second half; swapping Tindall for Tait was a poor move, especially as Tindall seemed to be telling the pitchside reporters that he could have gone on. I reckon if he'd brought on Wilkinson earlier instead of making the Tindall-Tait substitution then we could have maybe pulled it back.

Anyway, well done France. Maybe we can do better next year.

Milner should be in the squad anyway. No question. Ashley is a fringe player and so is Downing, but I'd prefer he had a chance instead.

Or play Rooney there and he can just run back and forth; scoring from his own crosses...

Now you're just being silly. Beckham might have been the committed, but not the gorilla.

Pretty much what you summed up - the ref was awful, we should have done better with our chances and there was one dodgy substitution. We were much improved and actually made the French work for the Slam, unlike certain other teams I might care to mention this tournament *cough*Ireland*cough*

Still, we should be in better stead for the Autumn internationals.

Ah, butthurt Man United fans. I'm at home :)

I think that anyone but United deserve to win. When Ferguson gets a taste of his own medicine, I really enjoy it, because he fails to recall the number of times that decisions have gone his way - after all, the earth revolves around him and as a result the decisions should always favour him, or else he will extinguish the sun!

Man Utd have hardly bought their success at the same level as Chelsea (and inevitably Madrid). Rooney was expensive, but he was also a kid that we nurtured. Same with Ronaldo.

All clubs should do a Barca though and grow amazing players from within.
It'd benefit the national team so much more too. Spain wouldn't be as frightening if not for the Barca core of Xavi, Iniesta, Fabregas, Puyol, etc.

I'm not fussed - we've got a chance at the World Cup and that's a real chance, because it's quite open this time around.
