Manchester, in the north west :)
Not that I didn't know where Manchester is :P

Another Jason Manford fan?

No, In fact i've never heard of the guy. And Surprisingly most people in the UK havn't heard of Manchester, unless thier english hockey fans, they all know who we are. (Because we beat thier backsides on a regular basis)

And Karl Pilkington too :D.

He's the one on 8 Out of 10 Cats who isn't Sean Lock or Jimmy Carr, and has been on Live at the Apollo/Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow a couple of times.

Manchester is like the 3rd biggest city in England.

Ever heard of Manchester United? They're pretty global... and City aren't doing to bad for themselves either.

The Welsh do have more power in the Welsh national assembly, but not a huge amount - 22% of the votes or 15 seats. Regardless, the Welsh National Assembly holds very little real power.

Fair enough - he's the latest comic to have a DVD out for Xmas, so I thought he was pretty big up there.

I think most people in the UK have hear of Manchester. Possible because of the football team, that buys it's way to the championship.

Oh, and it's "they're" in the case that you used earlier - contraction of they are.

If you see a band playing a couple of gigs you'll get London, Manchester and then perhaps Brum or Edinburgh.

But seriously, I'm an English Gentleman from Oxford, so I feel it is my duty (as well as keeping my stiff upper lip) to join this group gracefully and patriotically..

Kinda annoying how, as soon as the vast majority of my uni work for this term has been completed / submitted, all of my friends now have deadlines approaching. Oh well. Might as well have a cup of tea.

I'm not so sure. I'm pretty suire Birmingham is the 2nd largest city after London, although undoubtedly, Manchester is more well known for its sport, music etc. So I kind of agree with you, I just don't think biggest is the right word to describe it.

Nah, I said 3rd before, after Brum and London of course. The usage of 'biggest' in that post was in response to Coops mentioning of Liverpool and Leeds in the battle for 3rd place.

So I kind of agree with you, I just don't think biggest is the right word to describe it.

Indeed. Given the entire of the UK its probably more like 6th or something. Glasgow and Edinburgh will definately be above it... not so sure about places like Cardiff, Dublin, Belfast and such.

I didn't expect Bristol to be above it either. I thought Manchester was much bigger than that. Then again, coming from London, nearly any city seems small.

Interesting to note that if you go by urban area, then Manchester's much bigger as it includes places like stockport.

Yeah, but we were going by population. In that case, London, Birmingham, Leeds, Sheffield, Liverpool, Bristol, Manchester :P

Only if you go by Conurbation sizes (population) does Manchester leap up - London, West Midlands, GMUA (Greater Manchester Urban Area). I'm technically not in the West Midlands Conurbation - I'm about halfway between Birmingham and Worcester, so I don't count.

Yeah, and only Germany has a bigger population, by the three largest population centres in Europe. (13,275,000, compared to 13,110,000 in the UK)

It's amazing what you can prove with statistics :P

And the West Mids have probably got GMUA beaten again - Merry Hill in Dudley and Bull Ring in Birmingham, against the Trafford Centre. Anything else you'd like to add there? I've only spent a few days of my life in Manchester itself and about a week total in the region, preferring to spend my time in that corner of the country in the Lakes... when the tide goes out again.

Not that anyone here will likely remember him, but I hope Joxa is okay - he's from Cumbria and if it weren't for him, there would have been no "A Very English Post" and therefore no English Gents Club.

What a guy.

If only because of 2 reasons:

1) Sir Terry Pratchett hails from Wiltshire. Discworld is such an amazing series of books.

2) Cally comes from Wiltshire as well. Wiltshire is more South and possibly more West than me.
