Just because the Aussies would be, well, all Australian about their victory, doesn't mean feeling compassion for our fallen enemy is necessarily a bad thing. If we are humble in victory, as well as defeat, we show we are the true masters of sportsmanship. Something that is quintessesntially English.
Like I said before, I would show compassion towards Aussie cricketers that I actually like. Ponting is a stuck up twat, who thinks that because he's earned the right to wear the baggy green, that he is automatically superior to English Cricket. It's that kind of attitude shown by us that created the Ashes in the first place.
Freddy consoling Brett Lee in 2005, now that's what I'm talking about with compassion.

... despite the fact we're also violent pissheads who terrorise foreign cities if theres a football match on?
That's not just us, the Scots do that as well - Manchester 2009.

As an aside, I think it's a stretch to use football fans when talking about cricket. They couldn't be more different.
Well, from the cricket fans I know, most of them are football fans as well. Since one of my cricketing teammates just got sent down for assault and affray, I wouldn't put it past a cricket crowd to get rowdy in the presence of alcohol.
