Patriotism - New Pop Culture

On Sept 10th, 3/4 of Americans didn't really give a rat's ass about Patriotism or their country. They were happy just to live here and carry on with their daily tasks. Everything changed that next day. Suddenly, people realized that, in fact, they DID live in America . . and someone was really pissed off at America.
To ease the pain of the realization that maybe, somewhere along history's timeline, America had made a few mistakes in it's Corporate Building and hagemony and made some people angry, they started putting American flags . . on EVERYTHING ! Granted, at first, I was happy to finally see some people interested and proud of their country . . . but, like everything else, Corporate America has turned patriotism into a fad, and cash cow.
Now, many months later, stores still have their stickers up "Fight Terrorism - Buy Groceies Here", and people still have them on their cars "Look at me ! I'm not a terrorist!" but the people have forgotten why. Well, I never had a flag on my car (Because my pride in my country - as a part of the world population - resides in my heart and I don't need to prove anything)
But now, I'm gonna jump on the bandwagon . . Look at me ! I can feign patriotism in something I don't really care about . . .

I totally agree with you. In my school if you walk around in the halls you'll probably see the girls with their expensive new "Abrecrombie PatriotWear" pants. Of course they'll go out on a rant about how they hate Osama bin Laden and love to uphold freedom, but you ask them if know the slightest thing about current events, and they get very quiet.
Fact is, most of the kids in my school support the United States because they have no idea what's going on, see an awful lot of American flags, and think that it's cool to dress up in red white and blue. And another thing, if I see or hear any more retarded jokes about Osama bin Laden from those people, I will be seriously tempted to kick dirt on their Gap "AmeriWear" skirts.

Not only that, but you Americans (not necessarily YOU, but a lot of Americans) are disciminative of other nations, which is pissing them off. And also beating up Indian shieks (can't spell) because they look like Afghanis? Are Americans stupid or something? And what is with the whole "go back to Cuba" insult? I'll admit I don't know about the cold war and why Americans hate communists, but Cuba's a cool place to go :-)

Americans sadly hate anybody that's different.

The Cold War reference was the Cuban Missle Crisis. Communists tried to set up a missle facility on Cuba, which would have posed an enormous threat to American safety (because missles launched from Cuba could hit almost any target in the US.

I haven't heard that "Go back to Cuba" insult, though.

Patriotism is a very dangerous thing. patriotism becomes nationalism. nationalism becomes facism. watch out!

By the way, patriotism in America is totally misplaced. America has done very much wrong things in the world, but refuses to accept that their country isn't perfect. At least, the majority doesn't.

I have to agree, there is not a bandwagon Americans won't jump on. After the Sept. 11th tragedy, everyone wanted to support America, so morons heard "Support America!" Over... and over... and over again. Plus, people are so damn picky about the flag anyway (Don't be burnin' it now... ya' hear!) the two just went together. Sure it was nice for a while... but then the competition started. I saw a guy with the American flag, a saw a guy with 2 American flags, I saw a guy with an American flag and a Confederate flag, I saw a guy with an American and a Confederate flag and the state flag, I saw a girl with an American flag jacket, I saw another with an American flag thong, I saw a guy with a flag on his car, I saw a car dealership with about 20 flags around with lot, I saw a guy who painted his car red, white, and blue, I saw a building the lighted it's top lights red, white, and blue, just recently I saw someone painting the side of his house with the pattern of the American flag. Now, it has turned it to a contest of who's more patriotic. It's given Americans an excuse to show off, and at times for corperations to basterdize our current situation. Hell, September 11th was the best thing to happen to you if you sold flags. You were able to cash in one the new craze, as most companies did. And to think only several thousand people had to die for it.

Americans are usualy ignorant of what they have done to other countries in the persuit of oil and there vendeta against the USSR. No offense i'm sure many people of my nation(canada) are the same way. However America needs to think about this blind patriotism. Think back to the Third Reich of Nazi Germany, Hittler siezed power be appealing to the German peoples patriotism or more correctly put there nationalism.

There's a whole lot of generalization going on here. While many Americans are ignorant, you can't just generalize like this. Everyone's got a few bad apples.

Yes, the media started focusing more on patriotism and shit like that, because that's what will earn them the most money right now. Just because they were focusing on OJ, Clinton, or someone else before, doesn't mean Americans weren't patriotic.

But I do agree that there are a good number of hypocrites who have took what they previously had for granted, until recent events.

And I don't think the economic idealogy of the country (in fact, most modern world's countries) should be used as an excuse to resort to violence.
