Yes they did have some love songs ex: "I wanna be your boyfriend" but that was way before Pop-punk ever existed. Most of there songs are fast and pretty raunchy. Plus the Ramone definetly helped put Punk on the map which inspired many other great bands lie the Misfits to rise.

Lyrics and speed are irrelevant to sound, Ideals, and Labels. They Popularized the genre of Punk, and strayed away from many of the Punk Ideals. Therefore making them Pop Punk, but When they were playing, there were no such labels, and they thought they were playing good ol' Rock n Roll. Also, Everyone says they started the Punk Movement, which is the biggest lie ever.

If you mean by punk ideals as in anarchy, that is such bull shit. Punk back then has taken a more Nhilistic side than anarchaic. Which was exactly what the Ramones were doing. If you get a chance pick up "The Weird Tales of The Ramones". It has more than 80 of their songs on 4 discs and was compiled by Johnny Ramone before he died. If you listen to that you'll get my point.

I just want to say that I am so fucking sick of you people saying that Green Day, MCR, and Sum 41 are punk rock. Ok, punk rock is nothing on MTV-If you want real punk rock go to here:

www.punkcore.com

And start finding some good current punk rock, and if you think their posers, you should talk, because Green Day are far from punk, they are rock. No real punk rock band plays in fronta 10,000 people, ok? MCR are fucking emos and Sum 41 is...well probably rock, so I don't want people screaming about how Sum 41 or MCR or Green Day are punk, because they aren't. Go to that website and you'll see

AND I DON'T WANT TO HEAR THAT PUNK IS DEAD!!!!

I love you.

I'm not a Nihilist anymore, but a large amount of my collection is Punk music.

Well, a large chunk is more accuratley Post-Punk, because I'm deeply unhappy like that. :'(

I can appreciate modern Punk music, but it would be so much more diverse if the kids school themselves on New Wave, No Wave, Industrial, etc.

Nothing gives me a boner like the word synthesizer.

I'm not that much into Punk, but it's fun every now and then. I went to an Amnesty International consert last night. It consisted mostly of HC punk. I pogoed a bit. It was fun, I got scratches on my hands, fell over a few times, dropped my glasses once (didn't break though).

Of punk bands, I'm more into the generic pogoshit, but The Clash is really cool imo. 'cos they're commies and stuff.

I still like The Clash, even though I am completley opposed to Communism. I like their experimental streak and they can also be quite fun and tender at times.

Every CD of theirs seems to have it on the cover aswell.

Needles Sharing & Les Georges Leningrad are my two favourite modern groups.

Old groups that are still going strong who I love are The Legendary Pink Dots, Throbbing Gristle, Laibach & Depeche Mode.

Old-school biznitches!

According to Virgin megastore, they are Metal.

I thought Metal groups had to be Bluesey. Green Day, I like, but they don't like the Blues. :'(

Yes, but it means nothing to me ):<

On topic, Edgar Broughton Band is considered proto-punk, Punk before punk existed. It's swell, so add that. And Abduktio and Trace of Tellurian, two finnish punk bands I pogo'd to last night.

I've heard much about them, but I have never had the pleasure.

Proto-Punk that I am familiar with:
13th Floor Elevators
David Bowie
Electric Eels
Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention
John Cale
kraftwerk (As far as New Wave is concerned)
Lou Reed
Nico
Pagans
Pere Ubu
Rolling Stones (arguably their earlier work)
Roxy Music (New Wave again)
Stooges
Suicide
Velvet Underground
Who (Arguably their earlier work)

As you can see, I lack Fugs, I lack Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel, I haven't even heard Pink Fairies, Deviants or Godz (there have been a few bands with this monikeer) or even Fanny.
If you want to speak of Alternative country, I lack Billy Bragg. Of course, I feel that Alternative Country is a stupid idea, I may aswell draw up Bob Dylan and Woody Gutherie into it. I love the both of them, but this post is quickly becoming an incoherent mess.

I phail. I phail so bad. :'(

I think Punk can be also traced back to the late 60's psuchedelia, like Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd and Crimson King etc.

True, the Psychedelic bands were tearing up the rulebook first, I group Psychedlia with the Avant-Garde.

I am rather fond of some psychedelic, I espeically like it when The Beatles uysed to venture into it.
