Arguable. I think they're good, but alot of people don't think so. An artist doesn't necessarily have to be good to start a new music trend, just... different. But who can tell what the indomitable will of the corporate puppeters is, because it is they who choose to showcase the bands they believe will start a new music fad.

Just because Green Day stopped singing about drugs and masterbation, doesn't mean they've gone to shit. Their new album is amazing, so good it's go them nominated for 7 grammys including album of the year. But I guess it's not punk cool to get a grammy. If the teeny-bopper comment included them as well, you're an idiot. Green Day could have released another Dookie or Nimrod, but they decided to do something different they new wouldn't get a great response from everyone with Warning.
Plus, if someone offered you a shitload of money to go 'mainstream' and let more people hear your music, you'd do it to you baby.

Punk died. It was sad. Maybe two bands remain from when punk died as the 90's came. After '93, no new punk band was born. Punk was a movement, like the romantic movement or any other artistic movement, and was not a genre. That is a common misconception. For some amusing as hell poseur punk blog, go to xanga.com/riseagainst87

lol..
well, in a nutshell, punk is just a new word for "Thrasher Metal". the new metal is just a highly distored, slower version of it's thrasher roots.
hmm if thats your opinion i think there is more too it than that
as for old skool punk, that was the really REALLY early form of metal.
the oldschool punk was i agree with you here a metal like evolution but it is still serperated...
in the 70s, the earliest form of metal was called punk, starting with the Ramones.
hmm i would nevere clasify the ramones as metal but, with my context of metal being of the newer stuff compaed to the older shit you ma be right but i am pretty sure they are fare from metal
in the 80s, the high speed, drum & bass & guitar genre of thrasher metal was started. metallica brought it to the mainstream.
your thrasher metal, laeling matalica is ok and all because there is no way you can classify metalica as thrasher etal and nofx as thrasher metal or anny of the metal bands before metalica on the same tokan as the ramones
then, in the 90s, Thrasher metal was then called punk while punk was turned into the definitive "old skool" punk.
Yeh this is were people say punk is dead, its true though PUNK is prety mutch dead, its only new PUNK ROCK bands coming along now
then, in the 00s, when music went downhill, a bunch of the ramones died and pop rock was given the title punk, while the real punk music based a few songs on the crappy new pop-punk bands.
Again i have to disagree there is a definate gap between punk rock and pop rock,
red hot chillie's - pop rock
blink 182 - pop punk
I think NOFX's "Seperation of Church and Skate" shined quite alot of light on the situation.
true there
well, i like all music, all bands... but for the punk genre, the bands that are higher on my list...
i aint going to coment heree, as your bands you liek are up to you,
-NOFX
-The Casualties
-The Misfits
-Ramones (given. without them, none of the other bands would exist)
-Sex Pistols
-The Clash
-New Found Glory (they're the "Sting", "Yanni", or "Phil Collins" of new Punk rock; The lightest punk band out there. I know I'm gonna get flamed for this one, but i'm listing them since they happen to be on a blurred line between punk rock and in-general rock)
I DONT like the NFG but alot of my friends do i c them as just a band.
-Dead Kennedys
-Dropkick Murphies
-Flogging Molly
-Alkaline Trio
-Green Day (much like NFG, they seem to be on the edge of the line between punk rock and rock)
-Story of the Year (i think their a punk band... i think... i'm not sure. corrent me if i'm wrong. Page Avenue, Dive right in, and Razorblades made me think about there was a possibility they could be a new punk band)
aside from the non-mainstream punk bands, i bet i'm going to get flamed for listing NFG, Green Day, and Story of the Year.
at least i didn't list avril lavigne. she's too much of a pop artist to be punk. all she ever sings about these days is being a cocktease.
advral is just a pop girl she jsut has a punk look given to her by mtv, she doesent realy say she is punk.
"(singing)All this time you were pretending; so much for our happy ending."
"What happy ending? I just wanted to bang you a few times and dump you off somewhere. In fact, I bet you would've been a lousy lay that would just lay there while I fucked your brains out."
yeh but she is married to sum41 lead singer
Ashley Simpson... don't even let me go there. she was caught lipsyncing... <sarcasm>now THAT is punk.</sarcasm>
true trueee
sum 41 seems more like just in general rock. These guys would've been big in the 80s.
yeh but i c them as punk rock
same with Blink 182. they sound too in general rock to be labeled as punk.
there older stuff is punk there albums are caresed weith punk but the newest is not them atall....
all in all theye are punk
so were are you from by the ways because i feel people from different places have realy different veiws

I think the grammys were more nominated out of name-recognizibilaty, but whatever. And this new album makes them sound way too similiar to most of the newer pop-punk bands, so it feels like they're attempting to fit some kind of image than actually trying to draw from some of that creativity that made such albums as Dookie. I'm positive that if they tried, they could make an album that people will remember, but will still be uniquely Green Day. Hell, Offspring's in the same boat. You can't tell me that their newer albums like Splinter compare to Ignition and Smash.
Plus, if someone offered you a shitload of money to go 'mainstream' and let more people hear your music, you'd do it to you baby.
Actually, I probably wouldn't. I really only want enough money to live normally, so I'd try to remain faithful to my fans and still make enough money to live alright.

Yea, it's just bar chords and power chords. But then again, so is a lot of punk rock. I like Final Day and What If I a little better. But Waste of Time and Perfect People are my personal favorites.
