Well, I think your main bad reputation came from things like discussing your own 'failures' in the thread to congratulate Cristina for getting in Di Gi Charat, for instance. Just learn from the things people have told you in the past and hopefully you will be fine here.

Oh, I thought it was Hare Guu she got on

I'll admit I did go overboard a bit, but you have to understand how desperate I am to work on an anime dub

People back from AE: Welcome back! I'm a bit late, I know, but I just got back from an orientation thing at my school (was showing the freshmen around and such).

Sounds like you all had fun. I really wish I was able to go, but the con was just bad timing for me: I was just super busy with stuffs, and my family was in a bit of mess, so I had to deal with that aswell. I hope to goto AE next year, if ya'll plan to go again. I'm definitely going to AX, though. I haven't planned to go to any other cons (gotta save up) but hopefully I'll be able to goto any others in 2006 and meet up with you. :)

GrantM: I would have to agree with TESM's critique... just try again. I kinda like how you're persistant, but you should really take the advice of others; take it all in and improve off of it, otherwise all that drive to achieve your dream of voice acting is a waste of time. (You not listening, I believe, is what makes the VAA not like you so much.)

Have a listen to other people's (who're experienced) demos and compare them to the ones you make. See the differences. See how you can add things and take things out to make it better. It's how I started off-- lurking and checking out the VAAers' demos.

Also, I have a serious question for you:

What draws you to professionally voice act?

If it's because it just seems like fun, then you're definitely not going to like voice acting Pro. Does four months of open calls and sending in demos to all the big VAing industries and no call back sound fun to you? The air is heavy with depression, rejection, doubt, and loneliness. Suddenly a small house and a family in Nebraska sound like Eden.

No? Maybe you just want to give it a try, then? If that's the case... don't bother. Fire eating would be easier. Try it.

Or maybe it's because of that age thing you stated earlier; where you just HAVE to do it? If so... then well, I really hope you'll be able to show that you're actually talented and have lots of potential, because that reason is just impeccable.

Not that I'm trying to be mean then, but you really have to be PASSIONATE and PATIENT if you really want to go for a Pro voice acting career. You gotta improve as much as you can, and when you can actually see that you have improved after however long of honing your voice acting skills, THEN you can go out there and send out your demos. This won't happen overnight either, which is where the patience comes in.

I know you have some sort of age issue going on. Or at least, you think you do. Well, you don't. You can start as early or start as late as you want in the buisness of acting. It's not modeling. You don't have to look young. You can still manipulate your voice at the age of 50, unless you have throat problems of course. I don't know you real age, but you seem pretty young, so just don't worry about it. Right now, all you need to worry about is to being able to improve and practice as much as you can.

I hope that helps. I know a lot of people from the VAA don't like you, but I really want to see you succeed and show them that you ARE actually talented, and you've got what it takes to go pro. :)

I don't know what exactly you said to "Cristina" but I don't really need to know.

Good voice actors(The one's people want to work with), strive to create cohesion between themselves an others in the field. Being desperate is NEVER an excuse for being mean, rude or obnoxios.
If you do start a carreer (It's not going to a happen overnight) you will come across people from all walks of life, and with less and more experience than you. Burning bridges befor you start building them will get you nowhere.

Living in Seattle, I've Audtioned for Nintendo, Sega, and Playstation. While some people I've worked with(Non-Pro) got roles in the games, I did not. That doesn't mean I give up. I keep going...I did Acting for fun and I do VAing for fun...Working in flash is usefull for resumes when auditioning for pro work.

Think about this if you in such a hurry. The voice of Tony the Tiger started his carrer at 37. Other VAs have started later in life than that!

I've also met voice actors who got ONE major role, then because of getting on a Egotrip, were never hired in the field again.

So like Kagome says, don't dwell and mope over what you haven't accomplished...Strive to make yourself better, and learn how to see the good work that others can do to.
(That DOESN'T mean suddnly become a Otaku fanboy who gives out Praise and Worship at the drop of a hat.)...learn to take everything in stride.

I relise that pro voice acting is not as fun, but the VAs at ADV, Funimation and just about every dub studio there is seem to enjoy doing what they do despite that

I do, but it only works if I go on from someone else's computer, so sorry >_< I've got AIM though.

GrantM - I totally understand your desperation to work on an anime dub. I'm the same way, but realize that not living where the work is means it won't happen until I can move to where the dubbing studios are (You live in Scotland, correct?) But just try to be happy for when the others do go professional and you will have a lot more friends, and use that as inspiration to further your own career. And don't put yourself down because it hurts your chances (I learned that the hard way) You definitely have the drive to do it so go out there and make it happen, just keep working on your acting and use the advice that people give you.

Anyway guys! I just went to a local advertising agency (seems to be the only one that exists in Anchorage) where I had dropped off a resume and demo a few months ago. I went in to follow up and they said they never got a chance to listen to it and I said it was okay because I had a new one which was better...so they had me bring it up online and:
them: ..wait, which voice was yours?
me: ?? They all are..
them: You mean this whole demo thing is you, you can do all these voices?
me: Yes....*really nervous*
them: So who did you go to for the mixing and editing?
me: I just did it on my home computer.
them: O_O Wow....I wish I had that kind of talent when I was 18! You're amazing.
So yeah it was really crazy.....they said the only thing was that for commercial work (which is what they handle) I might need to sound a little more adult, but I showed them that I can do adult voices as well and they loved it..they had me read some commercial stuff (not to actually air but more like an audition) and said that there's a high chance that I'll start working for them doing commercial and narration stuff and I will get paid $50 per 30-second ad. So yeah that was super exciting!

And I totally agree with the people who said don't go overboard otaku fan. From hanging out with the VAs at Anime Evolution it seemed that they really preferred having normal conversation :)

I've always admired your drive, girlie, but remember that competition is still fierce. When you lose your head in the cool of battle, everything gets more muddled. Take this particular step as a great stride for what you go for, but when you move up the food chain, it only gets more fierce and more deadly to pride and spirit.

Keep at it, but remember to go through things slowly too, and spend time to reflect on a few moves ahead. We never have it all figured out, prepare, prepare even more!

See. Not so fun, is it? That IS the life, however, of a real Pro who's working. Just keep going and trying to improve. Though practice doesn't necessarily make you perfect, you'll definitely learn a lot and have the skills plus potential to go pro. :) Just take your time, though. Age is not a problem for you, so you have loads of time. Going at a steady pace will lessen the stress.

Also, Grant, find some good anime dubs (not the bad ones) and notice which VAs inspire you and what makes them inspire you, such as the energy they put into their characters or the little things they do with their voices. You don't have to copy them but just note what kind of things make something enjoyable for the fans to listen to. You might want to try building up some more acting skills on your own before sending off your resume to places...keep working on the things everyone has told you and you can even try making your own productions. Right now my biggest suggestion for you (based on the clips you have posted here and on the VAA) is to just work on making the acting sound more realistic and believable. It's good you are taking some acting classes because those should help.

but remember, as good as professionals are, don't aspire to be just as them. take some of the good they do, but being unique and doing your own thing will be better for you in the long run.

Also, stressed?

Welcome to life buddy, especially as a professional. You better buck up and get used to it so you don't die when your 25.

Play through the pain, depression isn't a standstil, it's a test, as stress. Get through it, and try harder til you're content, then try even harder.

Frogs' Post-Æ Megapost: Part I of II
The Replies:

Thief: Welcome back, good to see a demo. It's decent, the quality is good. The music sometimes covers up the voice too much. You could use a bit more acting in your demo, not just reading/speaking. But overall not bad.

Acelister: NO NO NO NO!!! We here at the VAC do not ever promote Windows Sound Recorder. It is evil, bad bad bad! Now we will never speak of this again...

Elli: Groovy on the dot com thang. I'll have to peruse your site later, got a lot of catching up to do still.

Buster: Nice Raven. You got some BG noise going on, but I understand it was late and you had to keep on the DL.

Metalmercenary: NO NO NO!!! Sound Recorder = PURE EVIL!!!!! I thought we agreed never to speak of this...

Aimi: Cool new demo. I recognized a few of the lines from NG movies I think. Are all these from finished work? Those clips always make for a better sampler I think.

KawaiiMeat: Ummm... yea. not much of a demo. And it's not very clear, lots of distortiona dn mic noise. Try again (unless you already have ***reads on***).

ShadowKoda: Only your second demo worked for me, perhaps you fixed it in a future post. Anyways, good range, decent quality. Some pops and scratches, but not too bad overall. Fun with effects...

Bezo: Congrats on the movie. Your work paid off me thinks. Your Sega/Bezo intro thing will get me everytime!!

NiftyKoala: w00ts and such for your MGS movie!!

Kagome: Double w00ts for the Miss Dynomite movie. I can't believe you got to be a transformer before me. You also might be too young to get all the ref's, like the tech specs and whatnot. Still, good job.

tm1984: Ummm... ya know - - - Æ was in Vancouver. As in Canada. Not Vancouver Oregon... yea

(((getting closer to the end)))

Grant M: Well, yea. I think you'll probably hear this from others besides me, but it's voice acting. Your demos sound like you're trying to hard and not actually getting into characters. As is often the advice you will see/hear/read from pro VA's, acting classes will help you *ahem* dramatically (no pun intended).

Gito: This is a good read. A few notes: slow down a bit, not need to rush. Also slowing down will help your diction, as some lines are harder to understand as clearly. And maybe try showing a few other examples? This is good, but only one sided.

and besides all this back and forth with GrantM (which I won't jump into) I've caught up on a weeks worth of posts... Look for Part II soon, where Frogs will recap his Æ experiences...

No, not all of them are from finished work... some were audition lines i used in the past. i haven't landed that many roles to make a full demo yet. *lol*

hm... the only thing that worries me is that although i don't belive I could go pro, nor aspire to do pro right now, I always like to give 100% effort into voices. Even as a hobby, I would like to do high grade work, even though it may not ammount to more than just experience for future things I have no knowledge of...

does that seem hollow to do things just for just-in-cases or for fun, but still give it your all, even when you know it won't ammount to much anyways?

Frogs' Post-Æ Megapost: Part II of II THE RETURN OF THE F.P.M.
Frogs at Æ 2005

So... yea, Æ 2005. Anime Evolution, the rich Vancouverian tradition hosted at the bee-aye-you-tiful Simon Fraser University campus in scenic Burnaby, BC.

Sitting atop a mountain peak just east of Vancouver, the SFU campus itself is a sprawling array of bare concrete, post-modern structures. The archetecture itself is strangely retro-futuristic. And the place is HUGE. I have never seen such a campus, but granted most of the colleges I've seen are in the middle of big cities where land area is limited.

Having driven up from LA (21 hours total) over 2 days, I was a little sleepy Friday morning for registration. Despite having gotten up at the ungodly hour of 8am, I was still very excited. What would the next 3 days have in store? The first thing I noticed was the Æ crowd was a lot younger that at AX. Almost everyone in the line with me had braces or were struggling with various pitfalls of puberty. Oh well, so much for meeting chicks...

After getting my badge ($35 canadian, a steal of a deal!) I wandered around for an hour getting familiar with the layout of the convention. You know, finding panel rooms/food/bathrooms etc... until it was time for the (((TA-DA!!!))) opening ceremonies. These were hosted by none other than The 404's comedy group (featuring Will, or The_Zodiac). I didn't know which one he was yet. But, at the 404's Anime Improv performance (almost imediately after the con opening) I figured out his identity right away. I would recognize his Vegeta anywhere.

During his performance I met a girl *ahem* woman. At least she was legal, possibly the only cute and of legal age women at the whole con (sorry Gwen, you're not legal in Canada yet). While following her around, I had the chance to grab Will before he ran off for the afternoon. He ended up skipping our panel the first day, something about being too cool for us.

So then it was time for our Amatuer Voice Acting panel. Kagome spotted me right away and jumped into my arms before I knew what was going on. Like actually ran at me and jumped so I had to catch her. She's cute in real life despite never showing her face in photos, so I didn't mind so much. There had been a lot of talk in the days leading up to the con about changing out panel time, and getting a longer block. As it was, the schedules didn't have any of the changes posted, so no con-goers would know to show up at the earlier time. So for 2 hours we showed fan dubs and hung out talking with maybe 5-6 other people who wandered in. *I did a reading of Kagome's prepared monologue from Inuyasha at one point, I won't describe it but needless to say I ended up on the floor crying like a girl*

Then, at the time listed on the schedule, people started showing up. So at this point Kagome, Nicole Jones and I did our best to turn our little discussion into a more structured panel. I hadn't known Nikki before, online or otherwise, but she knew what she was talking about. Kags mos def got the crowd going with her little Excel rant, even with nothing to rant about on the spot. We showed another fan dub, and had some audience participation. The later was a little bit of a mess since we didn't have lines for them, but some of them actually did really well anyways. After the panel, MC Huggies finally revealed himself, admitting he had been watching the panel the whole time... without helping. Will had missed it, and Lila hadn't made it either due to an audition she had. On the whole it was good though, and we had lots of people asking more questions after and getting emails and VAC info and VVA info.

Later, while hanging outside I was able to finally snap a shot of Gwen's face (she'll kill me if I post it, it's not developed yet anyways). There was a small crowd hanging out, when my girl from earlier suddenly reappeared. We all decided to check out the kareoke room. They were having issues getting set up, and there were people singing accapella. A dude had a guitar so I asked to borrow it for a minute to do my rendition of More Than Words (see VAC Idol album). It was really not as funny as I wanted (Will back me up, it was a tough room) so I stopped... only to be started up again when 2 girls ran up singing the words. So we finished the song, and they finally got the Kareoke going. It was, well - - - kareoke. After an hour maybe, our entourage left for the gaming room, leaving me alone to talk to my girl. We ended up heading to the main theater room to meetup with her other friends. We made sure to get there much earlier than they did...

So ends day one for Frogs. I was staying in the most ghetto hotel in the worst neighborhood of Vancouver. There are literally "proffesional" women walking around my building all night long. The water ran clean, and my car was safe in the lot I guess (no break ins) so all in all I couldn't complain. IE: the price was right. Anyone attending Æ be sure to sign up early and get a town house. Don't wait til it's too late like me.

Day 2 was slower, I went to a bunch of panels, saw some new Anime's, met industry peeps. We all met back up for the cosplay comp. Kagome as Kagome performing her monologue (better than I did) was cool to see. As well as all the other performers/cosplayers. I felt a little left out. I'm not a cosplaying guy, but I did come up with a really killer idea for next year, one thats sure to get a prize. But it'll have to remain secret. Our girl didn't win, the judges went with all crowd pleasers, not anything dramatic like what she did. What can ya do?

But afterwards we all hung out. Gwen and Angela (another friend who I hadn't known online or otherwise before) went to the guest meet'n'greet. Will had a ticket to the event back at his townhouse. So 3 of us (Will MCH and I) grabbed some food on the way, and headed to his place. He was able to get himself in free, and I let the Hugster take the ticket since I was meeting up with my Hentai Girl soon (did I forget to mention she was dressed as a hentai character before?). Well, of course when I found her she introduced me to her BOYFRIEND!!!1!!WTF!?!?!!?!1?!1??!@#$%

SO, that was awkward.

Frogs' Post-Æ megablah blah blah

SO, I ditched them and headed back to see my VAC Crew since they were out of the meet'n'greet. Apparently I mist some playground horsie fun also. Damn you Frogs for chasing girls!!! But it was all good, they were just hanging out, Gwen had switched back into her pink wig from the day before, MCH was chillin' quietly as usual, Angela was making fun of me for making out with someones GF, and Will was on the roof trying to get more of us to join him. As the night went on, more and more people were just hanging out, some were drinkin', some were battling with light sabres. Gwen got the munchies bad and ate like 20 bowls of Will's cereal, it was like one of those Total comercials...

We decided to go check out this dance party that was happening late. I ran on a head to drop my bag off at my car. When I came back the dance party was closed early, and I couldn't find ANYone. The whole con had maybe 8 people wandering around (even in the 24 hour video rooms). Finally I found Will and his buddy Shawn (Sean?). They were both quite inebriated and frantically looking for the girls. Turns out they had been escorted back to the town houses for being underage after midnight. Anyways, I just headed back to my hotel to sleep enough for the final day.

The last day, I got up early to check out as many panels as I could before the whole thing was over. I also went to the final Anime Improv with Will's 404's. It started a little slow, but man!! It had some of the funniest shit I've ever seen. I got some freakin sweet shots of Will running around like an idiot during this one skit where he was a nerd (a real stretch for all of us attending an anime con). Anyways, I had to duck out early to go host the 2nd AVA panel. Kagome and MC Huggies had both left early to get home, so it was gonna be just me and then Will as soon as he was done.

Lemme tell ya, the Sunday panel was awesome. We had a smaller room with no mics and no DVD player, so we had to just make it happen as is. I started talking, gave a little background on NG and the VAA, plugged the sites again and talked a bit about myself. Will came in and instantly we started doing this almost formulaiccomedy rutine. I was the straight man and he was the comic relief. It couldn't have worked better. For an hour we had the whole place laughing their asses off, and we managed to get all their questions answered and some (hopefully) useful info in their hands. I have a couple shots of the blackboard Will had been writing on the whole time, it was completely full wall to wall with all kinds of crap: links, terms, jokes, sketches, and a bit where I tried to explain why Canadian spelling is stupid (Colour, metre, and how they say AD-ult instead of ah-DULT). **We totally have to do this again if we can get to another con sometime**

As he said before, we ended up signing autographs and taking pictures with our new fans. Some even followed up to the dealer rooms while he looked for some gifts for friends. Between the 2 panels, we all made a lot of new friends and fans. I expect this week we'll be hearing from a few of them as they make their way to the VAC and the VAA.

Sadly, the time had come for the closing ceremony. Will was able to get me in without having to wait in line like a sucker. I pretended to be his camera man (even though the 404's were not even performing). It was cool, they showed the winning Anime Music Videos, they had the final 2 Anime Idol singers face off, a closing video shot during the cons first 2 days. But all things must come to an end, and I said so long to those I could find as everyone cleared out... and I went to go get a pizza cuz I was starving.

So here I am again back in LA. I kinda hit a second wind as I got near Sacramento and decided to just make a run for El Ciudad de los Angeles. Yea, 21 hours in one day, I don't think I'll be doing that again soon. Ironic thing is I got stuck in traffic less than a mile from my APT. There was a bad wreck on the 405 just near the 10 where I get off. I was like *smack* I drive like 1600 miles and I get stuck HERE!! My bed has rarely felt better.

I will post pics soon (somewhere) after I finish this roll. Will might have some video, but probably only the 404's stuff. We totally forgot to get the panels taped, we felt stupid for that. Oh well, next time we won't, and it will be even better!!

It was great meeting all my VA friends, it was good making new ones, and it was awesome hosting the panels and checking out the whole con. I really think we should try for something again like that. Seattle next year, LA next summer, Vancouver again... sorry Gwen, I don't think I can do Alaska (wa~wa~waaaaa~~~). I really hope that I can see y'all again, and I look forward to meeting even more of you in real life too (Elli I'm looking in your direction, we live like 20 miles away). So yea, not to sound like a damn hippie or anything, but it really was a wicked good time.

Aimi: Good luck to you also! And about your demo; I left you a comment on the VAA.

Response to question thing: You should still do your best even for amateur work; you'd be surprised if it lands up on the front page, and if you do a crappy job then people will remember you as a crappy VA - a lot of people know NG'ers from the flash movies they've been in and not from listening to their examples.

Frogs-kun: Thanks for the compliment :) I do have a habit of glomping people upon meeting them in real life ^^;; I did that to poor Lila at Sakura-Con, she kind of fell over..And you reading the monologue and yelling "Inuyasha!" in that girly voice was one of the funniest parts of the whole event. And yeah, I expected not to really get a response for the cosplay, they're only into parody stuff. :will remember that for next year: Your girl had a boyfriend? I didn't expect that from the way you guys were..hanging out. o.o Oh and I only had two bowls of the cereal, and that was because 1) I was drinking (shhh), 2) they don't have that cereal in the US that I've seen, and 3) there was like no food at the con.

I'm looking for a voice actor or two,
It's sort of an anime style flash...
I'm looking for male voice actor(s) who could do the voice of my Villian and my Hero.
The flash is in the works right now and I'm hoping to get the voices before it's completion.
(That will help me with the visuals.)
I can be reached on MSN messanger:
Creatureoftheabyss@hotmail.com.
Please get back to me as soon as possible. I will be monitoring the thread so if there is a possible canidate I'll reply with other means of contact.
Thank you. :)

no doubt, just what bugs me is: is doing voicing as a hobby hollow?

i dunno... maybe. I hate to feel like I let the artists I work for down because I'm not aiming for top grade in the long run, yet try to do as top grade as possible (for this level..)

it sounds confusing, I just wonder sometimes... Am I doing all I can?
and if I was, would I be serious about a career?
and then, would I be abondoning previous engagements and hobbies?

too many questions... hm... hard work can only solve it perhaps.
