Student licenses are $100 USD. I think that's pretty fair.

you need to qualify for the student licence though and your flashes made in this cannot be used commercially
As to why it cost so much?? flash was not designed for small time animators it was designed for corperations who do mind you have money. also have you explored what else the program can do besides flash movies??? there are so many tools that could very easily be marketed as seperate programs included in Flash that my friend is why it costs so much. Remember Macro is a company looking to make money so its going to cater itself to wherever and who ever has the money so in this case they are gearing there business toward large companys that can afford those big corporate licences

Most people who can't afford flash are probably students who never knew of "educational Licences". Many products are sold much less to students for comercial free use. And the reason flash cost so much is because it is such a powerful tool that is used by professionals. It wasnt really ment for young hobby animators.
i do not have a Student licenses, how do you get one?( i am not the sharpest apple in the barel)
Quality = Money
When you make something with the best quality, you deserve the best payment for it... The guys from Macromedia always do a great job with their programs, so they deserve the money...
That's why I always get my products in a legal way and all that... If we don't pay them for them, they will stop one day making this kind of programs better and better...
Flash wasn't made for people who crap out movies every ten minutes, it was made for websites...proffessional websites, and animation done in more than said ten minutes. It's not meant for the young'uns
Go to the Macromedia website and there should be a link for educational licences. Otherwise just go to flash, click buy flash, and somewhere there should be a link.
Or if you are too lazy, just use this link
Some schools or universities license it for themselves and to all their students while theyre at it. And thats why i can use flash legally and free by just being subscribed to my university :)
cooness XD, i got it cuz sum1 gifted it to my dad O.o W00T XD
its on macromedia for like 500 but other webs for like 50-300 lol or there ways for getting it free but im not telling you that cuz i dont wanna get banned
You'd think that macromedia would make another version, specific for people like us, and easier too.

easier = less features = worse flash
suck it up :p

Actually, considering the success of Photoshop Elements and the way it can be distributed for free with so many things, presumably leading some to buy the full version, a cut-down version of Flash may be an idea sometime...
Also, telent would play a far bigger part in the quality of the game/animation/whatever than the number of features. If some stuff was stripped out, I'm sure some, like _luis_ could still create far better work than most submissions here.
Although I suppose a problem would be a question of what to strip out - a beauty of Flash is in its versatility and whilst Photoshop is definitely an awesome program, it is only used to create still images. Bitmaps for the most part, with some vector work creeping in, but you're still able to directly compare a lot of users in how much they 'reach into' the program.
On the other hand, Flash can be approached in a variety of ways to make a variety of creations, making it almost impossible to compare skill levels in some instances.
Regarding the original question, Flash is, and always will be, priced at a level that Macromedia (as a company) believes will be most profitable.

I suppose they could make an animation-only version, that cuts out all AS functionality except basic movie control/preloaders. But that would be lame
