This article is from the Washington Post, but it requires free registration, so I'll paraphrase.

A well-respected government survey has found that teenagers are now using contraceptives at a higher rate, and the overall number of sexually-active teens has been reduced to 46% in 2002 compared to 55% in 1995. It's a clear victory for both sides, the left, who wants children to use contraceptives if they want to screw, and the right, who wants children not to screw, period.

The data was released in the middle of the debate on abstinence-only education. A bunch of analysts in the article say "Both sides are working. Yay."

I know what you're thinking, "Good news from the media in support of Bush's abstinence education?"

Oh, that's not what you're thinking?

Anyway, abstinence education is a good thing guys. One of the good factors about it is that it stresses the importance and level of commitment that sex requires. Because of that, people are going to be more careful if and when they decide they are ready for sex.

I don't think it's good to mislead teenagers. One of the guys here, I think Redskunk qouted me in his sig saying, "You can get HIV from any bodily fluid." Upon further research, I found out although most bodily fluids do carry the virus (not vomit and pee), it has not been scientifically proven that the virus can pass through spit and tears.

We shouldn't have to mislead kids into abstaining; that would imply that there are no good reasons to do so. It damages the credibility of the program. I hope they cite their sources, that's all.

HIV is not a true STD as it can be passed many other ways, such as contaiminated blood or needles.

But what is soo wrong about teaching teens how to use a condom. Its not like the teacher is gonna have to whip his penis out rub it then put a condom on. There are several fruits and vegtables that will work.

I kind of think absitance only education might be a bit too much wishful thinking. I would like to see it stressed but I would also like to see a solution that is actually useful in the real world. No knowledge of alternatives=pregnant teens=abortion=dead babies.

Or you could take two minutes and register.

Teaching abstinence as a way to deal with sex is all well and good, but other things need to be covered as well. Not every student says 'Okay, they said I shouldn't do it, so I won't.'

Also, not every student actually pays attention when a teacher demonstrates on a cucumber. For starters, they're embarrassed, because sex is still up there with fart jokes in the funny department, and they don't know how to deal with it as a serious subject. Then there's the attitude that kids have of 'I already know everything, shut up.'

It's good to hear that kids are using more contraceptives and such. It's also good to see that kids are holding off longer to have sex.

When did he say that? Was that in another one of the umpteen bajillion abstinence posts? :)

I'll go ahead and agree with you. I believe that other contraceptive methods should be covered in the program, and I think they are at least mentioned. I'm not so sure I want the kids to be taught how to use a condom. That just seems weird to me. If I were a teacher I would write in the lecture notes: "WARNING! READ INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY, SHOULD YOU SO CHOOSE TO DO THE DEED."

A once-over very quickly couldn't hurt for demonstration, but they made us actually try it. It just made everyone embarrassed, and nobody learned anything. But yeah, pounding it into their heads does no good.

At my old school, we watched a video teaching abstinence as well as condom use. A girl gave step-by-step instructions on the proper way to put on a condom via two fingers, while the video still stressed that abstinence is the only way to be 100% safe.

OH MY GOSH! How could you possibly get it up under those circumstances? Goodness...

My roommate says "They probably used a banana. They wouldn't actually make a group of kids get a boner and put on a condom." That actually makes more sense, but you could see where I got confused. lol

You know what I meant. I can't 'get it up' anyway, if you catch my drift, heh.

We used cucumbers. Albeit small cucumbers.

Abstinice education is ineffective propoganda that I don't believe. Believe you me, when I turn 15 and I get a girlfriend, guess what, IM FUCKING HER!!! And there isn't a goddamn thing any of you can do about. I believe in condoms whole heartitily the only thing Abstinence ed teaches is SEX BAD!!!111 and that condoms have a 14% failure rate. 100-14 equals 86!!! THATS AN 86% CHANCE OF HAVING A GREAT NIGHT WITH NO REPRUCUSSIONS!!! HOW COOL IS THAT!!!

Somehow I don't think you're ever going to have to worry about it. But just to be on the safe side.

What if she wants to abstain until marriage, or until you've dated for at least a year? What then?

Guys like that will either cheat, or find a slut in most cases.
