3.80 / 5.00 4,200 ViewsHi There, I recently posted a submission to the Flash Portal which was a little game that my (small, 3 people) company produced for and electronics company.
Whilst many people seemed to enjoy the game (I hope) a few people were a bit "put out" by the content of the game and felt that submission that contain advertising were innappropriate for the NG portal.
Now, I'm genuinely interested in what people think about this. My point of view is this:
We do this for a living and, whilst we try to make sure that the sponsorship element of the product isn't too intrusive, if we fail to do that and people genuinely don't like the result they are, of course, free to blam it.
I guess my quiestion is, just because a movie is sponsored or contains some kind of commercial message, does that make it less valid as enterainment or an example of good flash???
Anyway, I'd love to hear your thoughts... if you're interested the movie is here: http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/205701
I don't know, maybe it's just me, but shooting flying tv sets with a funny gun gets me sexually aroused!
Doesent bother me at all man. If you can make money doing what you like doing then more power to you.
Its probably becuase NG is suppose to feel more like a community of amatuer animators, and seeing something that professional kinda makes their work seem......not as good (crap)
It's no big deal. You've gotta do what you've gotta do. Just don't be total whores.
i think it's ok to advertise, i don't care if anyone else does it.
+++Records show that you are breaking the law.

I only think you should really advertise your site or services in a submission if you feel you should. I guess if the work fits newgrounds and in the creators notes you clearly mention that there is sponsorship adverts within. That's what I think anyway.
I am a Moving Image Designer i nthe last year of my degree, this qualification will allow me to persue a career in advertising- but personally I hate adverts. About one in twety are good, but when I see an ad for legal services on the telly, or film ads on the radio, they piss me off so much I change the channel out of principle.
Anyway- people prefer to see companies have the piss ripped out of them than promoted.

Okay... I kinda see your point but there's plenty of really professional work in here, take Tom's work for example? I also think that whether a movie is good or bad is about more than polish... there are lots of movies in here that could be described as being less proffesional but I would still give them good scores because there's a nice twist to them or they've achived something remarkable...
I think we can all aspire to achieve more and more. I can assure you that I learn just as much by looking at other people's work in here as we all do.

I Agree... most adverts suck... which is why we try and make ours not suck... although we may fail at this, you tell me?

Hmmmm... well, is this always the case? what about if your favorite band has a new album out... should they not promote that? I guess my take on it is to try and provide content that people actually like, content that I, quite simply, would be too busy stacking shelves at Tescos (think Kmart) to produce otherwise...
I have no beef with it, at least the adverts aren't forced or interferring with the game.
People will fucking do anything for a whistle point
I hate the internet : (

Do you not feel your stifling your creativity by adding adverts into it? I mean, how can you be truly honest with what you want to say if your concern is money rather than expression?
When you come to NG you get bombarded with ads. You don't have to put 'em in your movies. You wont make enough money from it for it to be worth it.
You are forgetting, as they are being sponsored by these people, they are probably obliged to put in adverts.
Its just like the a game company funding a project and the people in that project putting a logo in there at the beginning of a console game.
Y'seen that movie, I Robot? That is evidence of the dangers of advertising in what should be a wholly personal vanture. The adverts in that movie almost ruined it for me.

That's a bloody good question.., and I know many that would agree with you, personally I don't find it a problem, to give you some background I did a degree in fine art. Much of the time I found it a massive struggle to find things to make work about, I find it much easier when someone comes to me with a problem that I can solve and I think I can do it in a creative and rewarding way...

Erm well it's true that I'm not a millionaire but I do pay myself and my staff a fair wage... we don't starve.

I think there's a slight difference between an animation and a robot.
I really think the only problem with submissions that have ads in them (most people are here to pimp their work out to the masses, afterall) is if the submission doesn't actually contain anything of substance. Yours does, so I wouldn't worry about it. The submission you put through can't have been that bad, it won an award, afterall.

;o) Yeah hopefully it isn't bad! I thought it was worth bringing up since a few people said that they had a problem with it in the reviews and I was genuinely interested to see why it had illiceted such strong responses if only from a few people. If I can understand that then maybe I can avoid the problem in future?

I think that what you've made here is perfectly acceptable. It's quite clear that sony is trying to shed people's sentimentality they have for their televisions, but it's laid down in the form of an addictive little game.

I know what Tescos is. Anyway, I see what you're saying- my point is that they all are asking for money. Money money money. I know what I want to spend my money on, but I agree that it isn't so bad when it's something the target audience would want.
