Taking away freedom in the BBS! 2004-10-31 17:22:45

I think it's funny I am friends with almost all of the BBS mods but when one doesn't know me that well they end up locking my post. This happens very rarely but my main point I am trying to get across is - isn't NG all about free speech? I mean it's in the amendments to allow everyone free speech - yes this is a website forum but NG has always been about violence, media attacks, etc. We fought against Penny Bain and such who wanted to shut us down by saying NG causes young people to be violent *same with M-rated video games* but it's even worse when the NG community itself tries to shut a person up. It's ridiculous when that someone ruins the fun all because they got the privalege of being a BBS mod just because they made NG hats. Don't take away my freedom or anyone elses. Or else I shall start the riot again - http://www.newgrounds.com/bbs/topic.php?id=186252 :) Don't you guys believe NG should be the HOME of free speech? It USED to be that way...

I can respect what you're saying. But in my experience, these type of threads never last that long. Mayhap this will be the exception!

Or it could just be that you think you can get away with making a post about anything, and that your mod "Friends" won't do anything about it. The BBS doesnt work by making friends with Mods, because just because they are "friends" with you doesnt make you invincible

That will mean that NG will be full of little hitlers free to do what they want. I understand completely what you mean, and i myself wish it could be a bit free-er, but in reality it wouldn't work that well.

Thing, is, it's only SEMI-freedom of speech. You can get sued for libel or slander, so "freedom of speech" is a lie.

Dood! You should really let it go. Everybody goofs up now and then, its not that big of deal. He just thought that there didnt need to be a second post about the same thing. Happy times?

The old free speech argument is a difficult one...

It's essentially the same problem the people had with Larry Flynt...

I think Mods are there to censor anything overtly stupid, irritating or pretty much anything that contains BatteryClock (I think he's banned forever now)

But I understand what you mean, some of the mods can be a tad sensitive most of the time (fuck you Ventolin) and are responsible for some of the types of threads mods are supposed to block (fuck you Shrapnel), but still, they're just doing what they need to do...

I understand some posts should be locked - like the racist ones and nonsense 1 word posts but other than that - let the people speak!

Frame-warping all caps posts making fun of people who don't obey rules=most annoying and hypocritical post ever.

I'm not going to ban him, he is entitled to whine about something as lame as a locked topic like a little baby.

I locked his topic because there was another one identical to it, which wasn't even that old.

Is it really that hard to hit a few extra keys on the keyboard just to search for something? I don't think so.

i think we should be allowed to say what ever...but if that is the case then the ng forum would be swarmed with idiots talking about something as stupid as "what kind of socks are you wearing"....we dont need to know that...just like in the rules on the bbs saying how no one cares what you ate for breakfast...

we have guide lines to follow not just on here but in the real world as well...i support your opinion though, imean i have seen threads with meaning be locked up and seen threads that are just spam left unlocked...i mean i know this is a big message board and that the adimns and mods are doing all they can to make this a better place...

i hate it when some one gives their opinion on here and then gets told to shut up by some one other then a mod or admin...i mean we all should have the power to say what we want but some people do abuse this privlage there for there are rules and other guide lines...

I don't see the point of locking topics actually, I can see the point of banning but not locking, with banning you target an individual dumbass, but with locking you're targeting the people who might have written something potentially interesting in a topic that was hijacked by dumbasses...

Let's observe a couple things shall we? The post that was made randomly for no reason at all -

Last Posted: 9/1/04 01:38 AM (2 MONTHS before I replied to it bringing it back to life - which is against the rules)

That rule states: Do not bump old threads needlessly. If you're going to get banned for posting needlessly in a thread, then it's safe to assume you're going to be punished even more heavily for bumping an old thread if your post doesn't contribute to that thread. Let old threads rest in the abyss.

I was obeying the rules by not bumping an old post - but since you told me to do it - hey I went against the rules by doing so.

You really are a very sad person for dragging this out for such a long time. If you would have posted your pic in that topic then you wouldnt have 'needlessly' bumped it would you? In fact you would have contributed to the topic, which as you obviously know IS NOT against the rules! Its not like it was a 2 year old topic.

Grow up and deal with it, if you have this much of a problem with authority on the internet then you are going to have a hard time with it in the real world for the rest of your life.

EVERYBODY KILL YOURSELF. =)

HmmK. Everybody needs to stop whining/bickering/bitching/crying/bleeding/sobbing/ ect. Locked thread. Whooptey freakin doo. Get over it. This "topic" is completely unnessisary. If something gets locked cause its identicle to another post, who cares. Post in the other thread. Since the other one died, there is no point in making another. Obviously the last topic wasnt great, and that is why it died. If I was a mod I would lock this and then shoot you all in the face. Happy end =)

You can always tell when someone thinks they are smart when they say that they should have freedom of speech on the internet when they sign away that right when they post.

i know some mods may get a kick by moving their mouse over that little ip button or just over the ban user button or what ever it is on here...but if one was to ban some one for no reason at all wouldent they get in trouble? i dont know the answer to that nor do i care..but i believe that banning a user when they do not go aginest the rules is bogus...i mean if a mod or admin was to tell me to watch what i am doing i would and that would be that but i know some people like to talk back and thats what gets them banned...but freedom of speech is not all its cracked up to be..

i just hate it when a mod abuses their power (i dont know of any on here yet) by banningsome one because of something stupid and most mods give people warnings because they dont feel like banning that person for such a small thing...

um yeah...

Why the fuck not? If you believe in free speech, then why are they not allowed to bash you? Just because you've been a member longer than they have doesn't elevate you to a special fucking level where you get to be a vindictive dumbass based on age... What are you? Fucking 10 years old? You're telling them to grow up and deal with it... grow up and deal with the fact that some people might not like this topic...

Jeez, you'd be pwned in an actual debate, but I guess that's why you come on the BBS... Free fucking speech, asshole...

Let's just recap on a couple of things:

1. Freedom of speech doesn't exist on a private website, if the owners of said website place restrictions on they want going on here.
2. The movement against Penny Bain was her views about video games, rather than bbs posts.
3. People used to be able to get away with almost anything on the BBS a long time ago, because there were never any moderation tools. It's not that Tom and Wade didn't want that sort of thing going on, they just never had anything to prevent that sort of activity until last year.

Now, all of this is irrelevant - your thread wasn't locked for any of those reasons. It was, as has already been said, locked (and linked to an) because an identical thread. It is better to post on topic conversation to threads that already exist, rather than dilute conversation in several threads (this is not only better for people trying to decide whether or not there's an existing thread to reply in, but it's also better from the databases' point of view).

I'm not knocking you personally for this, AntiClockClock, but lately I've noticed you making many new threads without actually checking whether someone's already posted them - the last two that spring to mind (without having to actually search, they were that recent) were the ones relating to the halloween image (which was more a case of bad timing than anything else) and one about the portal icons (and there had been several threads about that in the two days or so before you posted your thread).

This has nothing to do with freedom of speech - it's more to do with good housekeeping and keeping all related posts in their relevant threads.
