bitmap to gif......

i've seen people who were able to draw something and save it as a "gif" file. I know that a bitmap file takes up more space than a gif file. I'm able to take a picture in the gif format, change a few things in MS Paint, instead or naming the file .bmp, I change it to .gif.
The problem is it takes up as much space as a bitmap file. i want to know how to draw something then have the file size just as small as a gif file.

You can convert any picture to any other kind of picture. It's really useful andis a great compressor. You get a 30 day Free Trial and then these stupid popups come up, but you still get to use it!

what i found that worked good for that was jasc animation shop3. you can convert the bitmap or whatever it is to any format.
