Something really suspicious happened at the portal....

I hung around for a while, then suddenly the service pack 2 addon told me that something had tried to download into my computer! it happened right when I clicked on "Sign in" after that, even if I held down ctrl which allows pop ups, i couldn't open the Grounds gold menu till I refreshed the page! Weird huh?

why can't you just contract with advertisers directly?

it probably make for better ads and a higher cut for you

So this is where I got all the spyware. At least it gave me an incentive to get spybot.

By any chance, was it Bloodhound.Exploit.6? I've gotten that before from a couple of different sites. I don't know much about it, so I was hoping someone could shed some light on the topic.

As for Newgrounds...no viruses or Trojans. Just the normal amount of pop-ups for me.

I used to see a lot of the ads pop-up on me until i got the new microsoft service pack, it comes with thier own pop up blocker and firewall, and i havn't gotten any since. So If people are still getting them then probely getting the service pack will stop them.

yeah i got a fuckin thing that i know for a fact is spyware cuz after it poped up i ran ad-aware and about 106 items came up. anyweays the thing is a popup that asks u 2 install some crap. company is GAIN Publishers or some shit like tghat. personally i dont trust anything like that if it says anything other than its product name. for example when on runescape for the first time it will ask u 2 install runscape. the same thing pops up saying "would you like to run and install Runescape ?" but with this GAIN thing it says "would you like to run and install after reading our Terms and Conditions....blah blah blah ?" personally i dont install nothin like that cuz i feel it is either unprofesional or a 12 year old nerd who doesnt no what computer code means made it. anyways tom i have a request. please please PLEASE take off that zip.ca ad! every time it pops up it gets n the way of the "watch this movie/play this game" icon. that and when u want 2 close it with the x, all the add is a link! so u click on the ad, the site pops up. normally i rightclick on the bottom thingy where when u rightclick it, it says "close(alt-f4)" but the add blocks that 2! these adds piss me off soooo much... hmmmz im rambling...ah well im out of things 2 say anyways...

Solution? Kazaa Lite. Duh.

All you people suggesting AdAware might want to know that Spybot Search and Destroy is consistently rated the #1 spyware removal tool for any PC. If you had AdAware on your computer and you ran Spybot, it would identify AdAware as spyware.

So here is your list of programs:
Spybot Search and Destroy
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
This program is to detect and remove spyware ALREADY on your computer. I highly reccommend turning the RESIDENT ON (under tools) so when an ActiveX control is installed or your home page is hijacked, you will know right away. The first thing to do is IMMUNIZE which helps to block a few things from getting past IE! UPDATE YOUR DEFINITIONS REGULARLY!

SpywareBlaster
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/
You will notice that Spybot is designed to work directily in tandem with SpywareBlaster from Java Cool Software. There is a link inside Spybot to download and install SpywareBlaster. This program is an added preventative to keep unwanted things off your computer. Works with IE and Firefox, enable all unprotected items after downloading and UPDATE YOUR DEFINITIONS REGULARLY!

Of course, your NUMBER 1 best defense against spyware and malware is common sense. If you didn't ask to download something, it probably isn't a good idea to save something on your hard drive that you didn't request. Look before you click OK in a window. If it is a toolbar IT IS SPYWARE. Those of you who think installing a Google toolbar will help to block ads? Of course, it will block some ads and pop-ups so it can collect information about you.

IE (the browser) is actually a Trojan Horse in disguise, only after you lock down some of the privacy settings using the programs I listed above does it become even marginally safe to use this browser. I have been running SP2 longer than most people (through many betas) and the security updates provided by this update are also worth considering. Still with all my modifications, I only use IE when a page won't open with Firefox.

Firefox
http://www.mozilla.org
Simply the best browser on the planet, and I have used them all. Avant has even been called spyware by a few forums. I recommend installing AdBlock (Tools/Extensions/GetMoreExtensions). Practice the settings of Adblock on another site (like Yahoo). Once you are comfortable you know what you are doing, then start using it religiously. The best theme (IMHO) is Noia Extreme (Small Icons).

Antivirus solutions are up to you, take your pick. Most professional users will agree that it is not worth the consumption of your system resourses to keep an "auto-protect" running all the time. Also, I hated Norton 2004 (resource hog) so much, I went back to 2003. Leave email scanning and script detection on, but I would turn off the auto-protect to conserve system resources. IF YOU DO THIS, YOU MUST run full system scans at least once a week, more if you are paranoid. KEEP YOUR DEFINITIONS UP TO DATE.

Well that's my 4 cents worth, feel free to contact me for more incredibly biased opinions!

I've been using Bayden popup blocker and it has been working great up until a couple days ago. Some of these popups were evading my blocker!

I saw a 100 X 100 pixel window pop up in the lower right hand corner. I traced it and found this to be the source.

http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/1
(Which is Scrotum the Puppy)

I was appalled to see that all of the ads that were evading my blocker were being bounced off this address.

Has anyone seen this happen?

All from the portal to submissions. I was just on the front page and a window titled 'PRODIGY' came up, selling videos or something & playing music, it might have been a band, (but not the original Prodigy). The strange thing is i couldn't get the URL because the window was playing like a flash, there weren't any properties.

You can remove the adverts completly from the website bu installing firefox (www.mozilla.org) and the AdBlock extension by going to tools > extensions > get more - Ad block adds a button to the bottom of the status bar and lists all the images / embeds in the page so you can block them out. You can use wildcard characters too to block everything from a particular server too.

Hello, I to was growing frustrated with the advertisements on not only newgrounds, but pretty much any site on the internet.

I found this for you mozilla based browser users:
http://adblock.mozdev.org/
just install it and follow the instructions to get rid of any type of ad.
(flash, gif, any type)

here is an example of what adblock does to your pages

The trojan which invaded my system was detected as soon as I logged on to NG. McAfee says that it's name was 'Exploit-MhtRedir.gen'

I'm protected, so no harm done.
