There's a lot of great stuff on the front page today - be sure to have a look! Killing Spree V is one that I personally had overlooked in the past, but it was brought to my attention by Zonox. Dog vs. Satan is one I just happened to stumble across. I couldn't believe it had been completely overlooked!

If you enjoy works such as Salad Fingers, Mr. Happy and Dog vs. Satan (all of which were on the brink of obscurity at one point) and you feel there is something that is being ignored, don't hesitate to email me! With 200 submissions per day, I know we are overlooking a lot of really great stuff. We gotta stop doing that! :)

In other news... You will notice that all Portal submissions with ratings less than "18+" now contain only clean advertisements. Authors who produce clean content no longer have to worry about sharing the page with adult ads, and viewers who only watch clean content no longer have to worry about adult ads appearing on their screen (at least, not on those pages). It's a tough balance to maintain the NG budget and minimize the adult ads, but we're taking it step by step!

Be sure to support NG advertisers whenever possible - the better support they receive, the better quality our ads can become, making NG more pleasant to browse! When you see a good looking ad for a video game or movie, take a look at what they have to say on their website! It would be a better world at NG if we could promote cool stuff like Viewtiful Joe and Kill Bill rather than spyware removers and blinking desktop icons.

kickass, dude!!!! I applaude decent and resopnsible people like you! Actions like this keep restrictive and overzealous laws from being passed!!!!

Tom,I've watched how your site has changed over the years and I must say it's been a real cool proscess!

on advertising...you should start a NG "classifieds" where companys can post ads for jobs...everything from IT support to game testers... I think this kind of advertising on NG would be great for everyone...companys and NG users!

Dude it doesn't matter if the ads are porn, the site has people dropping f bombs, submiting porn in entrys... porn ads aren't much of a difference.

That's good news. NG has got itself a bad rep for displaying porn and hentai ads, and that's something that's going to stick for a long time, unfortunately. You've come a long way from the days of "Girly Zoo" and "Brittney TOPLESS" ads (although the spoof ads were priceless.. WADIE ZOO!)

And sure, while it's fine to have hentai/porn ads for people at home, for those at work or school it can be a bit risky. Reducing porn ads can only mean good things, assuming the new "cleaner" batch pay well enough to maintain things.

As for supporting NG ads, I have a popup blocker so I don't get those ads (assuming you still run them,) so I tend to click on stuff every now and then to send a few cents your way. :)

yeah, I saw dog vs satan while it was still under judgement: I probably voted 3-5: the graphicks were sweet, but the animation of the devil was sometimes crappy.

and I don't really care for the adds.but I do like that interactive banner on the frontpage for that collage stuff

I'm glad your doing this tom. In my opinion, either way it's fine with me.
When it comes down to money, I don't mind the ads, removing the ads makes the site cleaner so either way NG is improving. :)

I hope the site continues to get better!

btw tom, I've been trying to let some1 hear this for awhile. I'm extremely active in the audio portal (200+ songs and 15 songs on top 5) and have a nice list of suggestions that'd help as a whole.
-make the 20 most recent audio change to 100 most recent
-some form of a top 20 list, like for each genre
-at least 150 word description so we can say what we want when submitting :P
-my friend suggested being able to co-author songs
-A new layout would be nice
-Some way to edit audio descriptions and/or update the songs
And I have a few suggestions for new genres:
Electronic-Acid
Electronic-Rave
Math Rock
Folk
Sound Effects
Humorous audio

I hope you read this tom! :)

I'm actually trying to reduce pop-ups as much as possible, eventually they may be gone completely. Supporting the in-page ads (especially when you know it is for something good - like a movie or video game) is the best way to help. I hate running ugly ads, but I can totally deal with seeing my favorite movies, bands and games across the site. I think most people feel the same way.

NG's growth has always been organic. We don't have any venture capital, so what we earn is what we have to play with. Business really picked up this past year and we made a lot more in ad revenue. As a result, we're able to pay for some massive hardware upgrades (mind-boggling expensive upgrades).

I'm trying to adjust the ads as much as possible without sending us in a downward spiral. The key will be to gradually introduce more quality advertisers while phasing out the bad ones.

NG will always be too edgy for most advertisers. Back when the site was just my content alone, there was absolutely ZERO porn (not even porn ads) and we still got turned down for being too violent and edgy. In order to cater to deep pockets, we would need to completely clean up the site content and make it lame. That just wouldn't work. We'll always be edgy, and we'll always struggly to maintain a line between mainstream advertisers and "underground" advertisers (ie porn). We could make a lot more money going 100% porn (and it doesn't seem to hurt our traffic either way), but at the end of the day, I want to be able to show Newgrounds to friends and family without feeling embarassed - just like the rest of you. :)

I don't blame you for that. Can't be easy running a very popular site that's basically user run. Despite all the ads and all, I still think this is pretty much my stomping grounds on the net :P (200+ songs and 68 flash submissions....:) )
Likewe all know, this site only gets better and better ^.^

I hadn't noticed that actually, but it's a nice change. Even with the Porn, I think Ng is great, now I completely overlook it and don't even notice it there. It's not a big difference but I think it's good.

Nice work, I look forward to hearing more cool stuff that the site is doing and iomproving upon, and yes I will email if I see a cool one, thanks.

(sry about the dbl post)
I remember awhile back about 8 months ago when you use to have those ads that have the yes and no btns to dl something. I hated those things, once I accidently clicked yes and my computer scanned 178 viruses and trojans O.o

Glad you no longer use those ads, can you do us a favor and never use that kind? I don't mind ads but that kind kind bugs me O.o

Everything seems a lot better to me the site looks very neat and the ads haven't been bothering me as much. But yeah I think it's important you can have something on your site that you can truly be proud of because people have worked way to hard to be embaressed. This site is perfect showcase of everyone's work and love for flash and art and I think its worth a lot more then porn ads. Having ads for cool movies, games or albums seems to just flow better with the website and all its users too.

Wow...178 virus and trojans?!?! That really sucks.

it was 100 viruses, 40 spyware, 38 adware, and 3 trojans, I just checked the log of my virus/spyware prog. Glad as hell that tom no longer runs those ads lol. Thankfully, that was all on my old pc, which conveniently led me to get this one (which is a little improvement, 233mghz to a 300 :) )

What's interesting are the Google content targeted ads you've been running recently. Since NG isn't exactly full of text content, they often end up being so irrelavant, it seems almost pointless. I would be curious as to how successful they've been, I know they work on a lot of sites and can generate a good deal of revenue, but they seem a little out of place on NG. Anyway, I know they pay quite well, so I tend to click on them and have a look around. If everyone did this, you'd be thousandaires in no time. =D

We could make a lot more money going 100% porn (and it doesn't seem to hurt our traffic either way), but at the end of the day, I want to be able to show Newgrounds to friends and family without feeling embarassed - just like the rest of you. :)

Also interesting. I would have though that porn ads would lead to a massive downturn in traffic due to work/school based users avoiding the site. I know I used to feel uneasy linking to NG, or visiting while in the computer labs. I guess it depends on the what the main demographic of NG users is, judging by the responses so far, it doesn't seem to bother many people.

How would a person know what is the submissions rating until he visited the submission page (from the Portal)?

I suggest adding the rating number after the submission in the Portal so people know what they are clicking.

Ideally, you would have a rememberable filtering system, so you could just see all recent submissions with such and such rating (as well as other factors, like score and game/movie).

As well, you still have adult ads on the Portal page itself. I understand the budget problem, but isn't that undermining the recent move?

wow, that is great that i can do that, ill be sure to E-mail you or wade whenever i see a movie that i feel is underrated and/or overlooked, thats one of the things i like about NG, its not like some faceless huge organization like some other sites like this i could name.....

I wouldnt find it surprising at all, the avergae age on this site, I would guess would be around 13-18 and I seriosly doubt any rebelious teenager would be turned off by this, in fact, it would probably make the site cooler o_0
Also, I doubt the only place kids would send links of NG at school, most schools tend to have a program that blocks all the good sites. I'd count on instant messaging programs more. Maybe e-mail or cheap free-webs accounts, hosting links to NG favorites (my freind links all 9 rab's). "Rebelios teens" dont care about porn ads, in conclusion.
Anyways, glad to see the front page being updated so much and the "clean potal pages" tom :)

I've only seen maybe 3 or 4 people above 25 on NG. I started going to NG at age 11, so I'd say that most users are around 12-21 in my opinion. If you want some cash and an ad that people won't mind, get one from Electronics boutique or something for preordering Halo 2, it'll get alot of hits.

I would think there'd be a large number of people who visit the site from work. Also, I can remember reading a post by Wade on another forum where he said the average age of the NG audience was something like 22-24. I know a lot of the community (eg: BBSers and regular reviewers) are quite young, so I don't know if there's much to back Wade's claims. Of course, he has access to better infomation then us, so I guess I'll go by that.
