I think it solves alot of problems or at least attempts to. I remember when I was in Middle, everyone cared about what kind of shoe you wore. Then in High everyone cared about what kind of car you drove. Alot of people can't afford the uniforms and why should you wear something you don't want to or can't afford.

The whole idea behind uniforms at schools is that not everyone is on the same financial level, and thus some children may feel self-conscious next to someone who can afford the latest trend. At least this way, they're all equal. So while I don't enjoy wearing the Catholic school uniform, since it's a private school, they have the right to enforce the dress code as they see fit.

Not everyone can afford it though. I helped my little brother pay for that crap and a jacket was like $150.

On one end, wearing uniforms improves focus in the classroom, it also prevents profanity and slander, but it also takes away from self expression. If I had to choose one, it would probably be wearing them, who cares if they look wierd, their only clothes

Actually, here it's quite cheap. The shirts are like $20, the pants range from $15-20. Don't know what school your brother's going to, but here the uniforms are inexpensive.

Eh. when you have to buy a bunch of full sets for two children it adds up. Compared to Wal-Mart which you can get a shirt for $4, $20 is very expensive.

I think uniforms in PUBLIC schools should be "verboten" (please excuse the little joke) on general principle.... the govrenment will not tell me (or my kids) what to wear!
Uniforms in PRIVATE shhool? Whatever....you don't have to go to that school....
I went to cathiloc school and we had uniforms....i diddn't mind them at all because it ended the need to keep up with fads...you couldnt get teased about what you wore because everyone else wore the same thing as you!(then 220$ sneakers came ot and fucked that all up)
But,I would NEVER support uniforms in public school and would not let my kids wear a uniform in public school(unless they wanted too....I wouldnt make my kids the tool of my own political beliefs either!)

You got to learn to give a little. Just wear the uniform, sheesh.
You'd just dress the same as all your mates and think yourself 'individual' anyway.

I think uniforms should be used if there are too many gang violence at schools. I know because during middle school, a strict uniform code was created after one kid nearly got killed by a rival game. It was a simple code: white t-shirt or polo shirt, black or blue jeans, black or white shoes. No sports team caps or hats, or bandanas, pants up to the waist, belts must go around waist. Girls had the option of using a black or blue miniskirt if they had a religion thing going on. Those whom used turbons were obviously allowed to use them...
It really improved the school for a while, until people started to decorate their bag packs with gang colors-- I believe now they have a "see through plastic bag only" policy since Columbine...

Wow. YOur school is more leniant than any in my town. My Uniform is:
White Shirt
School Tie
Black Formal Trousers
Black Shoes
Shirts must be tucked in.
No Trainers AT ALL
Tie Done up Properly
Top Button Done Up
No Skinhead Haircuts.
ONE set of Earrings allowed.
Hats/Coats allowed, but both must be removed when inside the school buildings.
It doesn't actually matter to me. I just wear it, and people have a way of making statements without using their clothes.

Well, it's been years since I have been in middle school, but I believe they still have the policy, and I remember my cousins telling me that they added a policy to make all bags plastic.
I feel sorry for you... even your haircuts?
My middle school wasn't trying to control everybody-- just tried to curb gang violence. So people were able to untuck their shirts, have long hair, girls were able to use make up, and other things...

It's not bad really. I quite like it. Makes me feel cleverer than I am, and they're right when they say it makes the place look tidier, because it... does. It also stops me thinking about what to wear to school. I quite like it.
They only limit haircuts to the extent that your hair must be more than about 5mm short. They just dont want complete skinheads. My hair isabout 9inches long, there's no real limits.

Uniforms aren't even a new idea. I see them all the time in newsreals from the 40's. Except I can't understand the narration, because ITS IN GERMAN.

I have to say that in some areas of the nation, uniforms help teach disipline and consistency, which are two of the most important things to live by in order to survive a world that would rather be alone.
In upper grades, it would prevent fights over how has the better gear, which is a fight I say in school on a regular basis. So, yes it could be a violation of your rights and I am sure some whiner will stand up and fight it.
The intentions of the uniform is not to violate or offend anyone, but to prevent immature bullshit. Anyone who feels that uniforms are wrong are just being self-centered and uncarring to their environment.

There's no need for them. This pathetic argument about it "equalizing" the students economically, so that they won't be "picked on" because of their clothing, is bullshit. As someone pointed out - uniforms just create more burden for cash-strapped parents. The uniforms won't be necessarily the same, nor will everyone have one in the same condition. Some might have more uniforms. And kids will be fucking kids - they'll find some other reason to alienate other little kids.

Only in Japan and Anime cartoons.

Even though I personally disagree with uniforms, I'll play devil's advocate just for kicks.
The prime purpose of a uniform is to look the same. All the other arguments are just meant to try to get people to start using them. Just like in the military, uniforms help keep the school and students looking sharp. Since everyone looks virtually the same, there wouldn't be any attention focused on one particular student, thus making the students focused on the schoolwork instead of each other.
And besides, it makes the school dress code a whole lot simpler.

But that's obviously bull. Simply slapping uniforms on people don't make them equal - there will still be people who are in the spotlight, and people out of it, cleaning their guns and making bombs.
And besides, it makes the school dress code a whole lot simpler.
Meh. So it probably adds to unemployment then too, huh? There are less people working for the school system. While maybe one or two more at the local department store, earning minimum wage....?

So they ALSO contribute to sinful thoughts, and underaged, premarital sex?

Well, those skirts have to be good for something...
Just great!
Only as joke material, though. Besides, they don't allow showing too much skin, and the skirts have to be a decent length. But skirts in general drive me wild.
