I have family in orlando. They called and told us they had to evacuate. they are heading north west to Louisiana (forgiv my spelling) where they are going to bunker up for a week or so.

My prayers are with all involved in Florda, Cuba and any other state or nation this storm hit.

Stay safe.

I hope they get away safely... and i hope it doesnt get across the atlantic. meanwhile, we've got alex to contend with, but apparently it wont be nearly as bad as it was for you americans.

You can build a basement here depending on location, but it isn't really necessary. Basements are better in the MidWest where tornados occur frequently.

The reason I say basements depend on location is that basically all of Florida is below sea level. Because of this flooding is very common, even on elevated ground. There is also the danger of finding sink holes. Because of this, only certain areas in Florida are basement-ideal.

Whoever said hiding in a basement was a good way to protect yourself from a hurricane was an idiot. Hurricanes are deadly because of their powerful winds AND THE MASSING FLOODING THEY CAUSE. You are better off going to a second or third floor than going to a basement. A basement would become a virtual swimming pool if any water gets in the house.

Winds had to be strong to rip something THIS big out of concrete.

This was only about 1.5 miles from my front door.

Uhh, no. We really only do give a fuck ourselves, Wade. Actually, the U.S. has given, percentage-wise, less foreign aid money than any other industrialized nation in the world.

Even so, only a very small amount of that aid is humanitarian--most being only given to already wealthy countries whose security interests coincide with ours. For a country as wealthy and as powerful as ours, the amount we give is pathetically low.

In terms of raw dollars, the most generous nation is Japan. In terms of GNP (percentage given based on that country's wealth), Norway is the most generous. We're 22nd.

Why is it that trailer parks get hit the hardest? One would think they would have the easiest time relocating when the storm is on the way cause their house has, you know, wheels.
