I would never want to and would seek every other way of dealing with such a situation before resorting to killing someone but under very restricted circumstances, yes.

To warrant killing someone I think a situation would have to go beyond mere survival. Like protecting your family from a group of psychopaths trying to kill them, for example.

Yeah, it is... It's depressingly slow.

Why do you suppose that is? Did we just come to concensus about nearly every martial arts related topic there is and therefore we have little left to talk about?

Yeah. I believe that if someone is the type of person that will go around hurting and killing people without paying it a second though, and they attempt it on me, they've asked for death. Sure, everyone has the right to live, but some people deserve to be removed forcefully from this plane of existence.

I have practiced Aikido for 2 years (it's very popular in Bulgaria), and stopped about a year after i got my yellow belt.
Now i practice kendo from 8 months with my dad and we both have got 5th kyu (we started at 6th) and we are doing pretty well :-)

Life requires techniques, we call then skills, abilities, talents and what have you, but I definitionally see no difference between a defense against a right punch and a recipe for pancakes. How to walk and how to play checkers, it's all the same. The more techniques you know the better equipped you are for battle, similarly the more life skill techniques you have the better equipped you will be for life.

It's so simple, so easy to see now that I have a reference point. Before it was just a mess of unknown but now I see that there is an order, a way to look that makes sense of everything I've ever known. Too much to know in one lifetime but at least now I understand why.

How has martial arts helped you? Any epiphanies or realizations that were reached through martial arts?

I have nothing really interesting to talk about. Unless the seven-point elbow strike drill is interesting.

Martial arts on LSD... The mental, physical and spiritual are all intertwined and if you know how to use it, it gets awesome.

Training with people who knew what the fuck they were doing taught me humility. Some humility.

Well. How would that kind of a statement be figurative? I was being entirely serious.

I went to my dojo FOUR TIMES this week. I had to help out with every class. My legs are so stiff and my feet hurt so much from standing up for hours straight.

Hello there.

Meeh, have been on NG for years but never checked out the forum. :O
Had no idea there was a martial artist's club around.

It's been going way too long to read all the topics posted, so I read the first and the last page, but I can see there are loads of sweet martial artists here!

I'm doing Wing Chun. began a couple of months ago, still 1st level. It's difficult to get far here in the Netherlands 'cause there is only one Sifu, so exams only take place sporadicly and sometimes have a few months in between. My trainers are mainly Shihing Pele Nguyen and Shihing Elvin Craig.

My first time I'm giving a shot at martial arts by the way. But I'm planning to do this as long as I can, I really like it!

Quite.

Man, I wish I could say yes, but Ulver is Ulver. Nobody else is Ulver.

Last.fm is good for finding shit that's really similar to other shit since it's user driven. I've found a LOT of good shit there, and although their similar artists to Ulver are mostly black metal, there are a few artists that are more experimental, electronic.

Other than that I'm not of much help.

At 7/22/08 05:35 PM, Tundazar wrote: My first time I'm giving a shot at martial arts by the way. But I'm planning to do this as long as I can, I really like it!

Man, martial arts are amazing. You develop your body, mind and spirit, learn to defend yourself, and build confidence.

The longer you stick with it, the greater the learning.

Also, advancement takes work. It's going to take serious commitment to do it for the necessary years to get really fucking good, but it's completely worth it. There are people out there that I couldn't survive 5 seconds against. Someday, my plan is to become entirely patternless, and entirely prepared for anything anyone could do.

You might also find yourself in the use of Ki. Ki is the intrinsic energy present within everyone and everything whose kinetic and telemental properties can be applied, among many ways, combatatively. It's somewhat esoteric, and mostly has to be found through self discipline and self exploration. Martial arts involve self-discipline, and some involve assorted spiritual involvement, both of which contribute to the awareness of this energy.

Ki is not Dragonball Z. It can be applied very effectively by people who're adept, but it takes YEARS to get undeniable results.

Martial arts is a road that never ends, and it's a good thing.

Don't do both at once, at least not just yet. Jiu Jitsu is really interesting. I have no experience with Muay Thai, though.

Muay Thai is a striking art using the hands, feet, knees and elbows. It is very effective and an excellent counterpoint to the boxing and street brawling that is usually encountered in a real life situation.

BJJ is mostly a submission grappling art. The takedowns and submissions of BJJ are among the best there are.

If you'd rather hit someone until they're useless, go for Muay Thai. If you'd rather hold them down and put them in enough pain to make them give up, go for BJJ.

Although neither art is safe to execute on anyone, you're a bit less liable to hurt someone and get fucked by Johnny Law using BJJ techniques.

Sounds pretty cool.

If you have a good Shihan/Sensei, it doesn't matter which martial art you train in. You should go ask to watch or participate in one trial class, and if you like it, join.

Cool.

Of course you can join, as long as you don't DP again, but it looks like this time was a mistake, so I'll let you off the hook ( ;D ) .

I do American Ken Ryu Kenpo, and I'm a second degree dan. What do you think about BJJ and Muay Thai? Both are very different than fighting styles you are most likely to see in the U.S., and are extremely effective if done correctly.

Finally back, I had to get my computer reformatted and ran into a few problems leaving me without a computer of my very own for a couple days, but all is well now.

I started learning Basic Butterfly recently, in case the name isn't enough of a give away it's a butterfly sword form we have in our system, one of two.

Wasn't the Butterfly sword originally called a Bulls Ear Sword? I remember reading that somewhere but can anyone confirm that for me?

Ha, that always sucks. My comp's internet died, so I'm currently on my Dad's... I guess that's one advantage of being in High School.

That seems interesting. Only one Sensei in my school knows Butterfly swords (I think).

I've never heard that before.

New Topic:

I went to a wedding in Ohio this past weekend, and one of my 7 year old cousins already has his blackbelt in Tae Kwon Do. He's been practicing for only two years and his test was two hours long. What do you guys think the minimum requirements for a black belt should be? I watched one of his forms and it wasn't that great either, so I think that maybe his McDojo should hold back at least a little.
