Nope. Say if the knifer pulls his arm up and tries to stab you, grab his upper arm and take it from there.

If it's a situation where your Attacker simply wants money, fuck yeah hand it over!

You can just replace all of that stuff anyway.

But two muggers with weapons = They probably want more than just money!

Yep, so that's when you try to get away after temporarily disabling them.

You mean an overhead stab with the blade protruding from the bottom of his fist? Yeah, that ain't gonna happen. No way is a real Knifer going to attack you like that. Unless you work in the pstch ward of a hospital, dealing with a knife-weilding patient, you're never going to get attacked like that.

I love defending against armed opponents. I don't mean against an actual attack, but when my friends are dicking around with my bokens or they've got plastic knives or whatever. Out of all of the types of self defense I think it leaves open the most room for improvisation and creativity, not to mention it's hard as fuck and satisfying as hell once you've got it down.

Yeah...... it's possible that a white mouse will jump out of my left ear, and tap-dance while whistling Dixie...... Doesn't mean it's likely to happen.

Watch out for Self-defense instructors who use the very unlikely over-head stab as a way to demonstrate a knife disarm. In my experience, those instructors are generally full of Bull$#^t.

But if someone asks for your money and he has a knife or gun, just give the money to him. If it's more than one guy, they just want to fuck with you. So, you have to get the guys between each other, and avoid being inbetween your opponents. The instructor told us that do disable someone, you must hit one of the four body parts that do not grow muscle: the eyes, the throat, the groin, and the very front bone of your shin. If you hit one of these parts, there is no way your oppenent can stay up unharmed.

Those are some pretty cool things. My school teaches most of that stuff too. We do exercises where we're in a circle and they will call out numbers and certain people will attack and we'd have to defend AND get out of the circle, which is the best way to defend.

Also, we teach eye, throat, shin and groin hits, so I think that your seminar was good (from what I hear) but nothing that you won't learn in a Martial Arts studio. It's cool to know that everyone agrees in situations like that though.

Also, what kind of Martial Art do you study? I never got a chance to meet you.

Mono:

That's an interesting feint that you described. Purposefully missing with one kick, in order to land another. But an experienced Fighter is not likely to be fooled.

Perhaps, but I have seen the technique work over and over again. I've even made it work several times.

You're probably right that a real knifer isn't going to attack you like that but not everyone is a real knifer or knows how to fight with a knife. Chances are that if you get attacked by someone wielding a knife that they know a thing or two about how to use them and probably won't make the mistake of a easily defended downward swing. On the other hand what if someone isn't an experienced knifer and does make that mistake. It doesn't hurt to prepare. If the only knife defences a school teaches are against a downward swing then you have a problem but teaching them in addition to more practicle knife defences is only covering all your bases. Does R.B.S.D. teach defences against a downward knife swing? Or is it even discussed beyond how unlikely it is to happen when facing an experienced knifer?

Anyway, this is finally relavent :P

To: Fremen-

That circle you mentioned sounds like a good training exercise, but only if more than 1 number is called at a time.

Do the numbers get to use training weapons as well?

You're right that the eyes, throat, and groin make excellent targets. (Not so sure about the shin though. I prefer sliding your own foot down the Attacker's shin, and breaking the small bones in the foot; at the back of the foot).

The thing that bothers me is that, too often, other factors are never discussed by many instructors. Such as the fact that some people just can't bring themselves to go for the eyes. Whether it's to gouge one out, or just poke it. They have a psychological block. Then there's the legal ramifications of gouging out 1 or both eyes...... Sad to say, but maiming an attacker, even if necessary, can lead to legal problems.

The throat is a target for extreme situations. Shots to the throat are lethal. Even if death doesn't come instantly, the guy's throat could easily swell up from a blow you threw. When that happens, no air is going to where it needs to, and the guy dies. Only go for the throat if it's literally Life or Death.

Groin shots can be painful as fuck! But most of us guys learn to instinctively protect the family jewels at a young age. It can be difficult sometimes to land a crotch shot. And nearly impossible on an experienced Martial Artist.
____________

To: Thunder-

When it comes to unrealistic moves, such as a single, static, downward knife swing; an RBSD instructor will teach how to defend against it..... if you ask. But they generally prefer not to waste their time with that sort of nonsense.

Sorry Thunder, but one of the best ways to spot a Con-man or an Arm-chair Warrior is if he teaches how to counter against such an attack. Years ago, before Jim Carrey was a movie star, he was a TV star on a show called "In Living Color." There was one sketch that highlights EXACTLY what I'm talking about.....

Carrey played the role of a M.A. Master..... teaching how to defend against an overhead knife attack. He gave a real knife to a female student, and told her to deliver a downward stab while he'd show the class how to neutralize such a threat. Well, the first time she came at him; she bent her elbow and STABBED HIM! I couldn't stop laughing! ..... He corrected her, and they tried again. And each time, she would make a small mistake, and stab him! Finally, after getting stabbed about three times, she did it right. She came at him very slowly, like a stiff-armed robot! He took the knife away and crippled her. Then patted himself on the back.

Now we're talking about a main-stream, sketch comedy show from back in the mid '90s. Even back then, they knew..... Sorry, but unless you're dealing with a stiff-armed robot, you're not going to LIKELY encounter such an attack. Not gonna happen. If you run into an instructor who wastes his time teaching a counter to such an unrealistic attack, watch out. I seriously doubt he'll know how to properly defend against a realistic one.

So I clicked on a random banner ad for a sword selling website, the first time I've clicked on a banner ad in months, and I just happenned to stumble across the exact blade I've wanted for about 2 years here. Not only that, but it's reasonably priced for what I'm getting instead of costing 5x the price because it's a replica blade.

I do believe I plan to own this and post pics.

Hi there,

Im new here, well.. kinda. I've started posting here when this topic had like 80 pages of posts but I stopped posting. I will introduce myself a little now.
I'm doing Ninjutsu, for... let's say, 3/4 year. If it weren't for my brother I would have practiced Ninjutsu for half a year longer but me and my brother were fighting for fun. Then he jumped right on my wrist that was in a position that if something that was rather heavy falled on it, it would go into a position it shouldn't go. I broke my wrist, making me wait after a first testlesson - that I found rather enjoyable - for more than half a year to start practicing again. Sinds then, my brother never thought of jumping on me again. Well... this is my story ;p.

That sucks man, I don't know what I'd do if an injury like that kept me from practicing.

Happened to me last week, but he was also wearing a cowboy hat.

I was talking to an old as hell member of the club, Lethality, if you remember him and he was talking about a form seminar that he went to last week. From what he was saying the guy was fucking amazing despite the guy was a master instructor. I only say it like that is because the masters in my area suck. Anywho he was talking about how even though the guy was doing just simple forms, the Tae Guk set, that day he fucking made them look beautiful. YOu gotta love it when a master instructor actually puts effort in shit nowadays. Sadly it seems you rarely see it.

I have a couple things to talk about but I'll only bring up one more thing because the keyboard on this computer sucks and the internet is down at my house. The three year anniversary for the club is coming up in August and I figure we should have a contest of some sorts or maybe do a collaboration of some sorts, possibly get someone to make a flash, but just a tribute to the club and martial arts in general. I remember when the club first started we thought it wouldn't last even a month let alone 3 years. If you look at every other martial arts club I don't think any of them actually got passed 20 pages. And being here since the clubs first day I gotta say, why the hell do I still come here. Guess I actually like this place, go figure.

Well I have a couple of ideas as to what we could do. Could possibly get Tom to do a shoutout on the front page. Possibly to get him to do a martial arts day on NG. Well we'll see. Post any ideas you guys got.

Notice: This product is especially dangerous because of the sharp reversed blade and should not be purchased for youths.

LOL ...... I'm sorry, I couldn't resist. :P

I know about that site. The only thing that bothers me is that the sword is not differencially heat-treated. I'm sure it's very sharp. But if you use it for any sort of practice, re-sharpening might be a huge pain. But a differential heat-treat also strengthens the blade...... so it doesn't snap in half on a hard hit.

Then again, you know a few things about swords. If it makes you happy, go for it. Personally, I'd go for a Hanwei model at about only double the price. Don't forget the pics, Tom.

I'm not too worried about sparring with it, I just want something that won't break in half when I bustopen a cardboard box with it. (It happenned to one of my swords, LOL) This is to be mostly a decoration piece for me, plus I don't want to spend a lot of money since I'm a poor bastard.

To Lagerkapo:
I tell you, getting injuries like that really sucks. You don't only have to wait to get on with your sport again, but you also can't do much at home to keep on training your muscles etc. There is perhaps not much chance of breaking anything in normal live or in Martial Arts (even if in Martial arts you've got some more chance) but it's still irritating IF it happens. Well... It happened to me and that sucked, but I'm can do Ninjutsu now and I enjoy it.

To Monocrom:
I'll definatly stick around, I'd like to talk some more about Martial Arts and hear story's of it from you people. Btw, I still remember you and Dsm from before. :p

To Dsmking:
It would definatly be a good idea to celebrate the third 'birthday' of this thread. We could make a tribute, where everyone posting in this thread could tell something about their sport or make a sort of storyline presenting his/ her sport. We could then give it to someone experienced in Flash so that he could make a flashmovie out of it. Just an idea. :)

That's good to hear. I remember lots of people leaving this thread because of people that weren't doing nice to each other. Some said goodbye, some didn't. It wasn't fun seeing people leave. After a while I left to, I just didn't had the time to post and I also thought the way that people were interacting with eachother sucked. But that isn't a problem anymore now, I see. :)

Just noticed that a little while ago.

Although there is a Sporting aspect to many martial arts, my art (RBSD), has none. It's pure self-defense only. Also, not all martial artists go for the sporting aspect that might exist in their art. Some do martial arts for the Spiritual aspect, some do it for the challenge of mastering an art, some (like me) are only concerned about the self-defense aspect.

New topic: Do any of you ever focus on fluid body movement in your training? It may just be the benefit of the Tai Chi I took a while back, but I've found that moving your bodily fluidly and relaxedly has many beefits.

Firstly, if you're relaxed when you make contact with someone their muscles automatically relax a bit, enabling you to hit them harder or move them more easily. If you're tense as clockwork your opponent will pick up on it and tensen up too, creating more difficulties for you in the fight.

Secondly, when you're fluid and relaxed you can channel energy into hits (I'm not talking chi or anything, just physical, kenetic energy you store in your body). This takes some practice, and I'm by no means an expert on it, but I've found that hitting like this, although impractical in an attack, can sometimes be used in a spar as a great opening move.

Fuck you asshole.

Joking but just posting, This is my art, is kinda lame. Not that it isn't a bad thing to post about it is just that that is what we do everyday in the club and me being here for nearly 3 fucking years that topic has come up quite a bit...

I want to try to get Tom to do a "martial arts day" on NG. Kinda like clock day and that shit where people make flashes about the clocks, or pico day. Now I'm definitely sure that it wont be as big as those, cause lets face it that is NG's history, but a martial arts day is going to bring quite a bit of flashes and shit. Because well every one knows martial arts literally kick ass so they are gonna want to make a part of it.

To: Lager-

With regards to fluid movement, I think it is important for another reason..... If you end up having to defend yourself, it's better to get the job done as quickly as possible. If you can use a technique that flows from one move to the next, you'll generally be faster than if you have to execute one move, stop, then execute another. Fluid movement is important because it helps you transition smoothly from one move to the next.

All things being equal, the guy who's faster is usually the one who wins. Out on the street, you "win" by surviving.

A martial arts day on NG sounds like a good idea. If Tom gets behind it, no doubt you'll see more than a few M.A. Flash submissions..... hopefully, not too many of them will suck. But an official day would kick ass.

Well yesterday I took a class and was actually mad when the head master came out to teach. He explained the importance of practicing slow kicks..... to 3 second degree black belts.... who practice shit like that all the time. The man never teaches and he has no idea what to teach anymore.
