Starting today in Sweden, the sporting event of the year for the homeless is underway. The Homeless World Cup of Football 2004. There are over 200 homeless people participating in the event from 28 countries all over the world. Will team Austria be able to repeat as homeless champions? Or will a dark horse steal the tournament like Greece did in Euro 2004? Only time will tell.

Umm..wow.

I'm your average Afro-American fetus. For example: I enjoy basketball, I'm rather good when I play too, but I'm much too busy scratching my horrific cracked skin these days.

now THAT's something worth watching. i don't like professional sports because it makes me feel financially tiny. that's why i watch bowling. they play for less money than what i have in my pocket.
"if he makes this spare, he wins... 25 dollars." and i'm going "OMG he needs to make this spare or his wife will leave him!"

Is it going to be televised? How do they pay for their uniforms, donated?

That would be a great pay-per-view show. I think it could make a lot of money. I know I'd pay to see a bunch of smelly people playing football.

From the article:

"The event is organised by a worldwide network of street papers and supported by sporting goods manufacturers."

Therefore, their kits are donated. The idea seems to have some positives to it as a few of the homeless people found jobs afyter the tournament.

Too bad that football (soccer) isn't that popular in USA...

There is a US team competing in the tournament, so at least there's American representation in the competition.

Yeah, but that leads to another question...how do they pick the teams? Do they have tryouts? Maybe the countries that play have their own internal homeless football leagues and they make up an all-star team for their country.
