Heh, nah. Johan Maybe, but definitely not Myers. When you get as many hits in the post season as you do the entire regular season, I don't think you're gonna win a hitting title. Zambrano will probably win it though.

In other news, Maddux announced through his agent Scott Boras that he plans on retiring this offseason. With his 20+ years and 350+ wins he's a sure fire hall-of-famer. Heck of a career, and although I dreaded when he faced the Phils in the 90s on that amazing rotation Atlanta had, you had to respect him.

Yeah, I had a grudging respect for that trio of pitchers and really did approach the 1999 World Series with trepidation, as the Arms of Smolz, Maddux and Glavine. I think that we took advantage of the fact that we were fresher than the Braves. Same as you did over the Rays - not that I'm saying that they would have beaten you, but it might have been closer.

And Maddux just won his 18th Gold Glove award to boot. I guess that's a nice retirement gift from the voters of the Rawlings Gold Glove award, but I can't help but feel that a lot of these voters really don't do enough research before they pick the winners. Maddux is reliable, but there are dozens of pitchers that have pitched about as many or more innings than Greg and have fewer or no errors. The only thing he leads in is Assists over Brandon Webb by a slim margin. Webb has more innings and less errors, a higher fielding percentage, more put-outs and just as many double play involvements.

Other winners are Yadier Molina at Catcher, Adrian Gonzalez at first, Brandon Phillips at second, Wright at third, J-Roll at short, and McClouth, Beltran and Victorino in the outfield. I have a feeling that the voters didn't do the best of jobs as there are probably better defenders at some of these positions as well, but I'm not complaining seeing J-Roll and the Flyin' Hawai'ian there.

I heard that the Cubs were trying to acquire Jake Peavy from the Padres.
Well...there seems to be one thing their owner do not understand. YOU HAVE TO SCORE RUNS in the postseason to win games. Their pitching stuff was not that terrible in the postaseaon, it was their offense that failed them yet again.

Geovany Soto and Evan Longoria were named Rookie of the Year in their respective leagues. Both of them were pretty much no-brainers.

Tim Lincecum of the Giants won the NL Cy Young Award.

yknow, for me, obviously Philly winning the title was the #1 moment of the season for me, and while Utley's "WORLD FUCKIN' CHAMPIONS" is close, i think this quote from Matt Stairs after his game-winning pinch-hit HR in the NLCS against LA takes the cake at #2 for me:

"When you get that nice celebration coming into the dugout and you're getting your ass hammered by guys - there's no better feeling than to have that done."

Wow, my first thought was C.C Sabthia since he was the reason why the Brewers made it to the postseason, guess that you will have to play for the whole season then.

Pat Neshek tore his ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow and is gonna undergo TJ surgery and miss the '09 season. Neshek sustained a partial tear of the ligament during a game in May. The Twins recommended rest and rehabilitation rather than surgery at the time. Neshek said last month his recovery was on track and he'd be ready for spring training. In 121 career appearances, he has a 2.91 ERA and 142 strikeouts over 120 2-3 innings with a .188 opponents' batting average.

I wouldn't have said Sabbathia, as he only came across halfway through the season. If he'd have started the season as well as he finished, he might have had a chance, but his form for the Indians was woeful, comparatively speaking.

Pujols wins NL MVP. No surprise there as he was argued to have been the best player all year for the NL. Still, didn't he say 2 years ago that MVPs should be on teams that make the playoffs or they don't deserve it? I wonder what his stance on that is now.

As much as I would've enjoyed seeing Howard win another as it would've been icing on the cake, I'm not surprised he didn't win with a batting average that low. Had he hit even .275 - whether that means more RBI and HR with better average or not and just fewer strikeouts - I think he might've won. I have a feeling that Pujols winning this year is kind of like kharma for Howard winning 2 years ago. Howard put up insane numbers then, but missed the playoffs only by a couple games mind you, and Pujols won a ring. This year it's vice-versa, and although the Cards were still in it for a while, they ended up missing the playoffs behind a few teams.

Read the comments at the bottom, some of the early ones concerns what Pujols said two years ago.

Well, when you lead all the Majors in HR and RBI, you gotta get some sort of consideration, one would think.

For the first half of the season I would agree with you, but his numbers dropped off the second half. Supposedly he was battling a hip injury that he wouldn't mention for the better part of the season.

I just saw something online where they compared Youkilis to Pedroia and the other MVP candidates, and the stats showed that Youk' was way better than the others in the clutch. And he bested or compared well with Pedroia in other stats as well. So I think Pedroia was a decent pick, but Youk' would've been a better one.

Yeah, but when he finished second in the league in Ks (Mark Reynolds, 204) you've got to think there's something not quite right with him. More Ks, less HRs and less RBIs than his MVP year, so I don't think he's worth it.

Well he can't be all tongue-in-cheek about that injury now can he? He's actually scheduled for the surgery, but hasn't had it just yet. But yeah they're saying at around 4 months at minimum. He could make it back in time for opening day as long as all things go well enough (knock on wood), but I don't want to see him rush it for the first month of play in April where it's cold, rainy and chock-full of off days. No sense in risking a possible hall-of-fame career for the chance to play in just the first month of a season.

Also Pedro Feliz - Mr. World Series winning RBI - had back surgery as well today. He had back problems and missed some games during the past season and is trying to get his disc/nerves in order to stop the pain he's been having.

In non-Philly news, Mike Mussina decides to hang it up. He was one hell of a pitcher, and although he didn't make it to 300 wins he did quite well and will probably make the hall soon, if not on the first ballot.

Coco Crisp was traded to the Royals for reliever Ramon Ramirez. He was 3-1 out of the pen with a 2.64 ERA. He's 27yo and had 70 K's, 31 Walks and gave up only 2 HR last season thru 71.2 innings pitched. Looks like a sold reliever going to beantown and they NEED one.

Additionally, Mike Mussina has decided to call it a career and retire.

The Red Sox are also in talks with A.J. Burnett, but still have a ways to go before any deal will be called. IF they even take him.

Not quite that bad - might miss the opening few weeks of the year, but other than that, I'm sure the Phils would rather have a healthy Utley than an unhealthy one.

I think you meant that he was the starting pitcher when Ripken broke the record for consecutive games played. Mussina would've had to been around in 1982 with Cal if he was the starting pitcher for when the streak began. But kudos for the nugget.

Well, everything has got to be taken in context - one pitcher that wasn't doing to well with one team can suddenly play really awesome when he puts on a new uniform and has a different 8 guys to back him up.

I'll view it with an open mind - we've offered CC the big bucks, but we don't know if he's going to sign for us, as the Brewers and the Angels are looking to get in on the act here.

I hope that CC doesn't go to Anaheim, as they'll have a sick rotation.

also the rangers finally got off their asses and traded one of their catchers...gerald laird to le tigres for a couple more prospects that the tigers couldn't afford to give away. that leaves the rangers with taylor teagarden, max ramirez (fucking badass) and jarrod saltalamacchia. i would have to imagine that if one of these guys becomes the clear-cut starter then the rangers will trade one of them away.
