I think that are two reasons that people are against gay marriage: (1) The more obvious of the two is the moral standerdes of traditional marriages would be comprimised (not to mention the religious views)
(2) The lessobvious reason is that if same sex marriges were recognized on a federal level, then the goverment and bussinesses that employed the gay population would be obliged to give them the same financal benifits and advantages of a traditional marriage. And the majority of the tax payers (at least I think) do not wish to pay out of their own pockets for something that that do not approve of anyway.

Man I got to learn how to spell.

There is nothing really wrong with gay marrige. They deserve the same rights as we have because they are human too. Why shouldn't they be able to enter that "holy" and legal bond together. They could possibly raise their adopted kids better than some straight couples. They could teach equallity and not to judge others on their colour or sexual orientation. I would like to see two kids and their social understanding of things. One kid raised by a gay couple. And the other raised by your common redneck/hick/hilbily. Then we will see what comes of that. Well those are my thoughts on that. They are people and they deserve to be treated just the same.

All the arguments, even the most wackjob ones, have a coherence to them. If you accept the premise that homosexuals are heterosexuals who have chosen to engage in gay or lesbian relationships, then the buzzwords of "lifestyle choice" are consistent.

Problem is, I've never known anyone who went off and decided to become involved in a homosexual relationship by subordinating their heterosexuality. Fuck, I saw a gay couple bitch at each other about the fucking appetizers at their party one night. I somehow don't think John Q. Hetero would actually want this domestic hassle if all they were wanting to do was shag.

Trouble is, alot of people don't think the 'choice' theory is bunkum. That's why they bring up statements like "The next thing you know, we'll be marrying men and turtles" with total seriousness.

And I wonder if the Pope is still telling Catholic politicians what to do....

The Constitution is a marvelous thing... it is very elastic with time, modes of thinking, etc. And unlike the Bible and many other religious doctrine, there is a provision that says that people are able to 1.) modify the Constitution if needed, and 2.) or abolish it altogether and form a new government or have anarchy.

I doubt that Constitution looks anything how it did to the Forefathers... they had black slaves then, today we have free blacks who can vote and hold in governmental positions... back then, and etc.

But yet it holds basic concepts...

People are always going to have seperate ideas. It is time that the different sides stopped attacking each other. So you're different, so what? X person believes in the bible and homosexuality is wrong. Who is the person attacking them to do so? Y person thinks being gay is ok. Who is the person attacking someone elses beliefs to do so? Basically:

If you are gay or support homosexuals, you're probably going to get you're way. Lay off the religious zealots. I deal with people attacking me all the time with little or no argument. Get over it. Struggling and oppresion sp* is part of life. Do what you can but please don't use personal attacks. At the same time, don't flaunt it.

To answer such a question we need to ask ourselves- What is wrong with being gay?.
We all have different point of views when it comes to this subject. I think being gay is more like a sickness, as is being mentally handicapped. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying gay people is stupid or anything, I'm saying that this is not a matter of who you love or fall in love with, this is a matter of where you want to stick your "willie" in. Just plain sick, end of the argument.

Same goes for lesbians, unless they are really hot and sexy!

I'm more of a libertarian than a democrat or republican, so I'm curious what you folks think of the libertarian solution to the gay marriage conundrum. The libertarians propose that it is not the role of the government to recognize and reward (i.e. tax benefits) marriage, be it heterosexual or homosexual. I feel like this is a logical solution to the problem that might please both sides.

Well, I don't think that's an objective way of looking at it. If by "get nothing" you mean "the government doesn't give them money simply because they're married" then yes, that's true. However, I would reply that both sides do "get" other, more important things. Namely, I think that the supporters of gay marriage would be happy because the laws (and Constitution) of the United States would abide by possibly the most important precept of the American philosophy: not to discriminate against any citizen based on race, religion, sexuality, etc. On the other side, I think the opponents of gay marriage would be happy because the government would in no way be endorsing homosexuality/homosexual marriage.

But at the same time their benifits are being taking away as well.

Government support of marriage is a form of social engineering anyway.
I'm certain that a lot of people wouldn't like to have their privileges revoked, but there are benefits to a lack of government intervention in one's private life.
Some couples who do not exploit loopholes and such may find themselves paying less tax than if the government had recognised their marriage.
Many of the things that people marry for, such as visitation rights at a hospital, can be agreed upon privately with the use of a solicitor's services.

There would be less influence by the government on people's lifestyles, and marriage would become more a matter of preference than of economic or practical neccessity.
