Because if the U.S. militarily attacks a country that has the power to blow them up with nuclear weapons, that nation will use said nuclear weapons in retaliation.

If the U.S. has prior knowledge that a nation has past history of military aggression, (such as that demonstrated by Saddam Husasein when he lead an attack on Iran), and that said nation was formulating advanced biological and chemical weapons, (like the mustard gas the Iraqi leadership used to bomb and kill thousands of Kurds) then military intervention becomes necessary.

300,000 troops dying in the war on terror? I think its somewhere around 3,000. (Unless you mean somthing else by the "ultimate sacrifice" I have no idea where your getting those numbers, thats like a 1/3 of our armed forces.
