He thought his life sucked so bad that he attempted to kill himself. Doctors then "saved" him, because a person who takes a self inflicted shotgun blast to the face definitely wants you to make sure he lives through it.
Now, everyone in this small town where he thought his life sucked before is now utterly repulsed by the sight of him.
I know it's a difficult concept to grasp.

A guy that a friend of mine knew. They lived in a small coal mining town in SE Pensylvannia, We were sitting in a pizzeria, and in walks this guy. His face looked like just a mass of undefined flesh with eyes, and he needed to constantly wipe drool away from this hole that was his mouth. Needless to say the two slices I had ordered went into the trash that day.
A memory that still haunts me to this day.
