Whether to punish people for constantly submitting crappy movies, or let them keep on doing it.

I am trying to figure out WHY we need to ban people who constantly submit blammed movies.

**Here are some reasons I am for this ban:

#1. The NG community wants to have an increase in quality submissions. (Sometimes I want to come to NG and see great movies)

#2. We all want people to learn from their mistakes. (If I constantly submit shit and get banned, then I know to improve my skills)

#3. Crap eats bandwidth. (We all want NG to perform as fast as possible)

#4. Reduces the risk of people submitting free blam flashes. (This is good I guess...but really doesn't matter to me.)

**Here are some reasons I am against this ban:

#1. We come here to enjoy everyone's creativity. Regardless of how bad or good it is. This might discourage some people from ever submitting again, even when their flash and creative skills improve.

#2. I agree with people learning from their mistakes...but, some people submit a few flashes to see how the crowd reacts first. But seriously, there is no harm in submitting a total waste of time flash...is there?

#3. If NG is concerned about bandwidth, then they should delete entries that dip below 2.00 no matter how old they are.

#4. Free blam flashes are deemed "bad", and are usually intended to either get attention (however short lived) or give their friends a blam/protect boost. But in reality, any user can vote on that flash, and since I dont see too many of those anyway, I don't think this is the reason for the ban.

I think this ban has it good points and bad points...but I think 15 days is a little harsh. I would either shorten the punishment to 5 days, or make it 5 blams in a 30 day period.

The people that get their movies blammed are usually just people trying to get attention. But aren't all people who submit movies here trying to get attention in some form or another?

Cool, although I don't get the deal with the stickers but the ban thing seems good.

Response to Flash Portal Bans! 2004-06-26 02:55:57

I think this idea stinks. If someone wants ideas on how to improve their flashes how can they if their stuff gets blammed and they get banned??

Have you noticed that less and less people are responding to NG NEWS more recently. I used to see it new, refresh, and have it filled with pages of responces. But, now, I get to them, at the latest, the second page. I thought this would have like 30 pages by now. Especially since this is really important.

Response to Flash Portal Bans! 2004-06-26 03:01:33

i'm new on NG so my first entry will be crap.
but if my second one is crap to i'll be banned 4 15 days!?
come on,think about the new guy's 4 a sec ok!

Response to Flash Portal Bans! 2004-06-26 03:09:10

I think that it should be like 3-4 consecutive blams for the user to be on the ban list.

Yeah, definitely more than 2 blams...

<BI want to know why Wade did this!!!!>

Obviously, you can. If you reread Wade's post, it says nothing about submitting only 2 movies in 30 days, unless your movies are blammed. If Knox is blammed for submitting crap, so be it. I doubt he would do that, tho.

Hey, if the criminal keeps doing that, then I'm sure an IP address ban would be in order, which could be potentially permanent.

Response to Flash Portal Bans! 2004-06-26 04:02:50

So now we only ask people flag entries that are
racist

I tried. Because the flash was popular, my complaint was unheard - NG will not get rid of flashes that are popular. If I'm wrong, give me an example.

Same as above.

DUDE! I got the BAN and I havent had 2 things blammed in the past whatever days! I have even had 2 things blammed at all!

Response to Flash Portal Bans! 2004-06-26 04:36:41

I don't agree with this idea exactly. It isn't fair to ban somebody who submits a 0.02 movie for 15 days, then ban somebody with a 1.54 movie for 15 days as well. Er, two movies of each.

Is there any chance of the system being tweaked to reflect that? If people are -just- missing judgement, they shouldn't be banned as long as someone who is borderline 0, IMHO.

Ok. Here is the message I got.

Error - because you have uploaded more than 2 movies in the last 30 days that have ended up being Blammed, you have been given a mandatory 15 day Portal ban. This ban will be lifted in 4 days

IF the ban was instated today, then wouldnt I have a 15 day ban? That is a BUG inside of a BUG. Isnt it? =S

Response to Flash Portal Bans! 2004-06-26 04:42:31

Ugh, I'm sorry but E hate the new system...

#1 We're going to have less blams

#2 We're going to have less whistle points

#3 It sucks

#4 .... It sucks

Response to Flash Portal Bans! 2004-06-26 05:04:03

Thank God, people are stealing flashs more and more,

Flag them as stolen, maybe? It wouldn't be entirely accurate, but it would draw attention to their breaking the rules.

First post on the BBS here, since I've recently started voting more fanatically on entries and taken an interest in this new system. A little too fanatically though I guess, I think I got my whistle broken because I forgot flagging reviews as abusive counts as whistle-blowing.

Right now the entries submitted/entries blammed ratio is like 5:4 or something, that's pretty crazy. I imagine that in a few days, the amount of submitted entries a day will only be half as big. I do think this system might be too harsh on new authors, though. What about: get two movies blammed in a week, don't be allowed to submit for a week?

I think tightening the rules is a good idea, but be careful you don't scare people away from submitting... they do bring in the biggest amount of visitors, I'd imagine.

Response to Flash Portal Bans! 2004-06-26 05:35:41

Hallelujah.

Kids, there were 1,819 blams yesterday.

That's NINETEEN pages of obtiuaries

I mean...That's almost Two THOUSAND Flash Movies blammed in one day, when the average is 1/10 of that.

Oy.

hmm... i feel as if this is only going to slow down the blam/protect scoring system but it will warn users to not submit much more crap.... well i guess theres a good and a bad side to it...

well this is one way of filtering the flashes and the comments on it.it will be much better if the flashes submitted will have a quality not just silly stuff.there are really lots of great flashes the one that you see. you can see if the author really gave a great of time in doing such thing.

Still, its a bit unfair for the newbie animators, who try their hardest and just want some advice on how to make it better

Response to Flash Portal Bans! 2004-06-26 06:56:21

Thats what friends are for, and normally you know when something is bad. Plus 15 days gives them a 15 day period to make it a GOOD flash. I think it's all good (seeing how I have only had 1 flash movie blammed out of my 7 submitted, all of them being >3... except 1 :D)

My flash sort of sucks, but after a year of doing nothing, I think I have mentally noted all the timing notes and camera positions etc that I could probably make something really cool, I already have a really cool idea.

Response to Flash Portal Bans! 2004-06-26 07:34:30

i suppose that's a good thing, but it's a bit harsh... some of my movies still get blammed, with scores of 1.50 and such...

i like chicken

Response to Flash Portal Bans! 2004-06-26 08:18:11

I love the idea. But what about the people who make make flashes that all ways score around the 1.6 level and people people who get blammed becouse just a lot of "blammers" are on?

Is this sepose to get those people just to make better flash movies or not? (wouldn't mind if it was. =] )

Response to Flash Portal Bans! 2004-06-26 08:36:46

well i guess that means no moer flash supmissions for me

Wade already talked about this, and I agree with him: EXRTEMELY RARELY a good ( over 2.5-3) submission will be blammed. So don't worry about this "omg wut if they get their flash omg unfairly blammed, or wut if that day, there's more blammerz :o :o :o".

Its supposed to stop people from repeatedly submittingbad entries ON PURPOSE might I add. What's ng for you? A place where anyone can make a shitty movie every day and have it blammed on the portal, or a place to learn flash and put decent effort into what you do, and then have you piece judged by your peers?
How is it fair that people who give their time to blame entries have to watch through heaps of crap because the person who submitted it has no intention of even passing.

15 days is ample time to learn Flash, I think there should be a part about tutorials included in the ban message and a link to the Flash forums, to help those who actualy put effort and want to get better. That way, the bans would at the same time prevent morons from submitting crap all the time and allow decent people with a good spirit to get into flash more easily and find the support they need to have their work stay on the portal.

Only thing I'm not sure about is the 2 blam limit. I think that is not much. Maybe it should be raised to 4, and have a message included when your entri gets blammed that warns you: "if X more of your entries ( where X is 4-number of entries blammed from this person) get blammed ( with a link to the portal FAQ) you will be banned for a mandatory 15 days".

As for people who make lots and lots of alt accounts to avoid bans, well we can't do anything about it. Only hope is if people reckognize the person's flash when they submit it under an alt, so they can inform the admins and they can take action ( i.e. deleting all that person's accounts).

And also, everyone who whined that they'd be getting less points and who used that as an actual argument should be ashamed of themselves.
