I've tested this out many times. Let me assure that it is not true. I've never met a woman who liked me who I didn't later find out was either abused, molested or raped. I learned a long time ago to neither ask for nor expect to receive empathy. It always goes south when they start reading my red flags. People will say they won't judge you for things that happened to you that weren't your fault... right up until you start telling them what the hell happened.
Lots of people in prison have justified their actions with childhood experiences that weren't even half as bad as mine. Even though I'm extremely high functioning and independent, the documented effects on people who have gone through similar experiences puts me in a watchlist category. It doesn't matter that I don't have problem behavior and haven't done anything wrong; the risk presented by my historical profile is more than any reasonably educated person can overlook.
Empathy is more than I can hope for. I'm lucky to find people who just don't ask too many goddamn questions.
And, in case you were wondering, I have no criminal record or psych diagnosis, and I'd like to keep it that way.

See, I'm with you here. I don't know how many times when I'm smiling or laughing not because I'm happy or something's funny, but I'm trying to control the energy of the conversation. People who don't know what that is think it's awesome to have that kind of sense of presence in communications and ability to control tone and content separately.

I was talking to a soldier friend of mine who is highly trained in things like counseling, and he called me out on inappropriate laughter. You know, as if my brain could actually run fast enough to have both the impulse to laugh manipulatively, and the ability to deny that impulse, while at the same time carrying on a conversation about an unrelated topic. I don't know if you've tried acting before, but there's a reason people are character actors, and that's because it's difficult to maintain a personal identity while at the same time.
