In 2004, France banned vending machines from schools. In 2011, it limited servings of french fries to once a week in school cafeterias. A year later, it imposed a “soda tax.” On Friday, the government said no restaurants can offer free refills of sodas and other sugary drinks.

The law, which takes effect immediately, said it aimed to “limit, especially among the young,” the risks of obesity and diabetes.

Will this law actually help French people become healthier? Does anybody live in France, and have thoughts about this law?

Why not just pass the law that will permit only two meals a day?

I kind of feel like laws such as these are a little bit classist because they normally target cheap unhealthy food. Fast food is tasty, sure, but a big reason why it's consumed so frequently in the United States is because a lot of people don't have a lot of money or time to spend on food.

Soda and meals are two different things.

i will concede that this is definitely a problem

HCFS is so fucking cheap calorie for calorie it's not even funny. As a brewer, honey costs 5x as much per calorie. If you are super poor, drinking nothing but bottom shelf soda is a pretty effective budgeting strategy.

Luckily the suffering of the poor is inconsequential.

That is a good point. Part of being free is making your own decisions. If you want to drink lots of soda, than go for it. As long as you are not hurting anybody else.

Soda and meals are two different things.

Make the bill recognize meal as a portion of food and a soda. Bing - it's as ridiculous as current law, while it's more effective.

Well... it's their country. If they're fine with it, whatever.

Drink water or wine instead!

I don't normally get a refill on soda when I eat in at a fast food restaurant, so this doesn't bother me in that case. But, when I go to a sit down restaurant, I often do get refills, and this would bother me then.

Although, I mostly drink water.

Water is cheaper than soda.

People enjoy things that are bad for them, like fast food and soda.

Finally, we got a report from ground zero. Do they have signs up near the soda fountains?

So yeah they're fine

Will it last?

If you put in a little effort, eating healthy doesn't have to be expensive.

These are great tips. Maybe France can use the sugar tax to fund programs that encourage healthy lifestyle choices?

If you put in a little effort, eating healthy doesn't have to be expensive.

That is a good point. They are trying to do the right thing.

You can buy a bunch of chicken breast and freeze it. Same goes for turkey burgers and tilapia and stuff like that.
You can buy a big ass container of cashews or almonds or whatever kind of nuts for like ten bucks. Lasts me about a month.
You can buy some protein powder.

Those are all healthy forms of protein.

You can find cheap stores to purchase produce. You can buy frozen veggies and fruits, canned beans and veggies and fruit. Pay attention and buy in season.
You can eat greek yogurt instead of pudding and ice cream.

Those are also great ways to eat healthy in a cheaper way.

If you eat foods with higher protein or that are more nutrient-dense you will end up eating less food and you won't be spending extra money.

Very good point. Home cooking is also cheaper and healthier.

This entire topic has a crying face. It was made about bans on soda refills, but has changed to which sports are gay. I would think water sports would be the gayest. They need to get some mermaid cheerleaders to make it more straight.
