Do you guys prefer a large map with several stages, leading up to an enemy stronghold with a boss fight like in Super Mario Bros. 3/Super Mario World?

Or do you prefer something more straightforward, such as Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (two "acts" before a boss battle) or Mega Man 4 (select any stage in any order, each ends with a boss battle)?

Do you think the SMB3 formatting is too padded or filler, due to being required to play 5-9 stages to complete a single "world"?

I like the Spyro (or Mario 64) style of a hub world that connects the levels while also serving as a sort of level in its own right.

Ideally you should be able to skip levels once you do a certain number of them. Like seven levels in a world but you only need to beat four to move on, that sort of thing. Sort of an adaptable difficulty.

The way SMB3 map was designed, I think you were able to skip some of the stages focus on going straight to the final castle, depending on the path.
You'd only get keys to unlock warp pipes and so on if you are going for 100%.

But yeah, I was thinking of a system where if you are in a "world" or "zone" with about 6 stages, you only need to complete 2-3 of them to get the boss stage unlocked.
