2D Metroid or 3D Metroid, which one do you prefer? Why do you prefer one style over the other?

Most definitely 2D, mostly because I like pixel art, platformer design, and the two dimensional approach to getting past obstacles. Might just be that I like what I grew up with more than the new, though. Nostalgia. Feels like 2D is becoming a bit of a lost art though, most games move onto 3D, and some don't make the transition well at all. Metroid's one of few I like in both dimensions though.
I only got into this series after Prime 3 so I'd like to think I'm slightly less biased here. I prefer 2D. I love the metroidvania setup, even when the map and item layout is incredibly lazy like in some of the lesser Castlevania games.
Te 3D games have a good atmosphere but weaker level design on average, imo, and some clumsy design due to the awkward time they came out. I also think 3D metroid has a significantly higher ceiling for potential and for the most part it's untapped. The dream would probably be Nintendo handing the franchise off to From Software.

Name one metroid game where you can see the booty
Edit: I just remembered Other M is a game that exists. Nevermind then, carry on.

I can understand what you mean. 2D is starting to become a thing of the past. 3D has become the new trend, even when it does not look the best.
2D hands down, I grew up with 2D. One of my first games super metroid 2 I believe. Never beat it, I became stuck in some area not by enemies but obstacles, couldn't jump high enough or something.

Yes indeed. I hope it turns around though, seems like at least Indie games stick with the former, and stir up some interesting titles. And Worms is back in 2D again, so that's something. :)

Have you ever tried a 3D metroid? What about it did you not like?

3D does add a special dimension to those. XD

It would be nice to see 2D make a big come back. Will it happen, probably not, but it would be nice to see.

Mechanically? 3D. Metroid Prime with the double jumping and dashing and all that was just a whole lot more fun to play than any of the 2D Metroids - a personal bias, sure, but like a lot of Nintendo platformers you really don't have any mechanical complexity or room for player inventiveness in the 2D Metroids. Or any real sense of speed or whatever.
Level Design? 2D. Prime sucked at that, plain and simple. Sure love getting led around by the nose. And honestly the levels are as big a deal to me as the mechanics.
So it's a toss-up. The only real answer is "Not Other M or Federation Force".

I could not agree more. 3D graphics at their best.

It's the only unarguable reason for 3D, really! :)
2D hands down. I grew up playing Super Metroid so I'm definitely biased. The 2D games were so much more unique than their 3D counterparts. Shit it has its own genre of its own. I just feel like the 3D games departed from what made Metroid special. Could just be nostalgia speaking, I'll always have a little warm spot in my heart for the 2D Metroids.

It is true. That is why most adult games use them.

Yeah... actually don't think I've ever seen an adult game in 2D. Now that I think about. Not that I play a vast repertoire of such games, but interesting...

So they do exist! XD Thanks for the awareness-raiser.
2D by a mile. Super Metroid is infinitely more interesting to than all the 3D titles combined.

Everybody seems to prefer 2D. I will put your vote down.
I like 2D more because I don't like Metroid Prime ok
Hi, Follow? :3
Really, I can't say that one is better than the other. I've played all the Metroid titles except for Pinball, Blast Ball and Federation Force and I think the 2d is just as good as the 3d Metroid games. They both have excellent atmosphere and excellent gameplay in my opinion.
2D
I haven't even played the much of 3D ones simply because it just isn't the same.

Which 2D Metroid is your favorite?

I don't really care for the original, (The one for NES) tbh.
Super Metroid is my all time fav.... but the newer handheld games were also amazing.
(Metroid Fusion + Zero Mission)
Also, the very first Metroid game I owned was Metroid II for the gameboy... and even though it really doesn't stand up against the newer 2D titles, it still holds a special place in my heart. <3

I can understand what you mean. You never forget your first game.

Depends if the next Metroid is 2D or 3D.

If it is 3D, will you give it a chance?
