My god, it's full of... Bars. Of soap. I'm not firing on all cylinders, please understand.

I went back and slapped on disclaimers on all the questionable shit in the sketchbook so far, since it dawned on me that all the people I talk to are milquetoast elderly parishioners and it would be unfortunate if they saw that.

Anyway my favourite so far is "Please do not be alarmed" on Mr. Workplace Health and Safety Hazard up earlier.

Last minute boring sketches, I'm afraid. Real shit stuff, didn't put any effort into it at all. After spending the day playing Flash games, too.

Ching Chong Beautiful is great, by the way. I'm not a big fan of platformers, but with Ching Chong I could learn to try. Perfect pacing, novel controls, great difficulty curve. Only real annoyance is that there's no option to retry a level after you beat it, a bit odd.

Newgrounds Rumble I'm not great at. Once you get to the 3 AI to 1 PC fights I flounder. All the same, it pulls off being a Smash Brothers thing better than PlayStation Allstars did.

Red Baron... Not sure I'd say it holds up as great as I remember. The Baron himself and the environments looks great, but the enemy sprites are a bit simple and the telegraphs on attacks leave something to be desired. But then, I still suck at it.

All these flash games are leaving me a bit inspired. Shame that animating is a fucking chore and I haven't the foggiest on how to deal with SFX and music. Also my track record with projects is less than stellar.

But who knows, I'll try something. Maybe it'll come to something, maybe it won't. We'll see, won't we, time travellers from the future?

I tried ink again and regretted again.

The thick one bled through the fucking paper. Gross. Man I would have lasted like, half an hour into inktober.

I kinda regret sketching this one out, would have made for a great painting. Anyway my brother requested a raunchy French avatar so I gave it a shot. That facial angle gave me some trouble, if it looks like she has a manjaw it's because I gave up and just used myself for a reference.

Might be the last time I use Photoshop for painting because I tried Coral Painter and that shits GREAT. Fuck has it been all my life.

Oh yeah, my Halloween picture got FP'd, glad people like it. I don't want to update the description to mention it because that's a limp move.

So yeah Corel Painter.

Maybe it's working out, maybe it isn't, fucking love how the brushes work. And the blending, mmf. Like you'll spend ages on a transition in Photoshop before you (me) give up and just airbrush it. Like all you want is a smooth transition with no fucking banding.

It takes TWO SECONDS in Corel Painter. Bust out the grainy water or just a dry brush and BAM. Smooth transition, no banding, suck my dick.

Course have to keep Photoshop around anyway, since I gotta resize shit and Corel Painter sucks dick at anything that isn't painting. Whatever I pirated both anyway who gives a shit.

There's... Three major paintings I want to get done in the future. Down from 7 on the queue, so pretty good.

The actual sketch sucks but who cares. I spent all of today drinking this weird Japanese beer and eating Mars Bars like a fucking loser. It was fantastic.

Yeah I know, I'm not fooling myself. These half-arsed studies and such might actually count for something if I did them for hours a day, cranking out an hour or so a day isn't going to achieve shit.

I also know from experience that spending hours painting from imagination doesn't achieve a damn thing. And that I'm not really in a position to give anyone advice, or that I'm even doing much of that. I stagnated years ago, and wasn't any good to begin with.

I'm so tired. It's so quiet here.

Also I've had quite a bit to drink and get melodramatic when I do.

So yeah, the game is progressing nicely. It'll just be a point n click, just to earn that Game Developer aura. I don't want to use to use the Artist aura since I'm not remotely good enough to be one, but Game Developer? I could dig that.

Also talking to myself, that's progressing nicely too. I will not lie to you, folks, it does not get uphill from here. Downhill, if anything.

Oh, I suppose some folks might take offense at the "not good" comment. It's relative, bruv. Some people want to not draw stick figures, I want to do shit that's like Rembrandt but hyper colourful. And I'm not, I'm doing shit like pic below. All relative, all relative. Please continue your day.

Let's take a break of our regularly scheduled program of "going somewhat nuts within the walls of this isolated echo chamber" for some GOOD news.

I undeleted my entire gallery, from that little grown up baby man-tantrum I had a few years ago. That includes stuff that should've stayed deleted, like the entire year spent drawing Homestuck fanart, the Red Baron and My Little Pony crossover, the self portrait in the style of Panty Stocking Garterbelt very poorly painted, list goes on.

Starting to remember why I deleted it.

But it's important to come to terms with your past. Can't let that hold sway over you, you'll do something stupid like spend an entire year drinking.

Anyway the new art thread isn't really refusing to face the old one, it's just an attitude adjustment in terms of workflow. Not a pretty thread, or specifically a progress thread, just an updated one, this one

So I signed up to some other stuff, other sites. Not that I don't intend to continue spamming Newgrounds with overlong diary diatribes that nobody should read, let alone write, but I thirst for improvement. I have very little going on in my life at the moment, I've got time to kill.

We'll see how it goes. See you all tomorrow. By you I mean me. Great talking to me. Thanks.

Seriously leave me in an empty room and I'll bore the walls to death.

Please ignore the Gorilla leg.

So the problem with the large sketchbook is that I'm going to have to come up with a new system to photograph because this isn't working.

Military refs today, stilt legs and mongoloid tires.

Hey Lintire, just stoppin' by to tell you i've been stalking the thread and i enjoyed them sketches very much.

I get a Frank Quitely vibe, if he drew actually pleasant faces.

Owlboy fanart for the Owlboy competition on Owlgrounds.

Kinda last minute, pulled through to do that dumb joke in the Art Portal submission field. Kinda eh otherwise.

Might try to do some sketches today, won't beat myself up if I don't get around to it.

The stalking is mutual, bruv.

You know, sometimes there isn't much to say, or there is and honestly it'd just take too much effort to spell it out when you're not sure the critique won't just crash and burn, or the like, we've all been there. But thanks! And there you go, I learned about Frank Quitely today, you learn something new every day.

I know jack shit about comics, really. I've read like The Watchmen and used to collect The Phantom comics when I was but a wee lad, that's the extent of my experience. So you know, it's cool to see some insight into the Beyond Realm (of sequential art). Cheers, dude.

Yeah, you 're hard on yourself on behalf of everyone here, so the tough love approach (also known as feedback) felt kinda redundant. I enjoyed the stuff (hey, i think i saw my buddy Shia Labeouf in there), and I throw away flattery as much as i do manhole covers. But i'm a quirky guy, so who knows?

Seems you got using reference covered.

Just work on the fundamentals and you'll do fine. Also, inking stuff in real life will be crap for the first 100 pieces or so, until your brain clicks and line weight starts mattering. Your color technique is pretty unusual, too. It calls your attention. Not sure if it's a stylistic choice or based on limitations. Just make sure you dont push into Tmblr-SJW-Rainbow territory (thats a request more on my side of things than yours). Or go all the way and join the horde.

Dont worry... if you've read Watchmen, you've read the last 30 years of comics, since they aped the crap outta it. Everyone. Everywhere. And the Phantom is the first and last guy i've heard of, who could rock a purple spandex catsuit.

Looking forward to more of your stuff.

Response to Sketchbook, Lintire 2016-11-14 09:11:35

So this was an interesting regression of ambition.

Went from "I'm taking it easy today, no painting, I bet I could do like four pages on the sketchbook, a critique AND work on my videogame" to "You know, I bet I could at least do two pages and a critique" and now it's you'll take the one page and you'll be fucking happy with it.

I think I found a good way to photograph it.

The only real stylistic choices are blowing up the chroma, putting in chroma where it flat out fucking doesn't exist, blowing up the reflected light, and the rest are fuckups.

Which sounds like a lot on paper but it leaves all... most of the fundamentals intact. Probably. I don't know about Tumblr but I don't see myself bringing in racial or gender politics anytime soon.

As for Watchmen being aped, I hope that dumbass vagina alien has appeared in at least one other comic. It has to have appeared again.

Really boring stuff, honestly, left to like the last minute in the day.

Actual activity in the port for once so I couldn't just sneak off for a few hours to download porn on company WiFi and draw. Actually had to do stuff I was there volunteering for.

Which is fine. Sailors get treated like shit by the shipping companies so just having someone there to do stuff like basic IT support, help contact their families and give directions is met with disproportionate amounts of gratitude, happy to help.

Anyway I do have something cool to show off for Show and Tell today, one of the sailors brought in this rusted to hell 50 cent coin and it ended up with a pretty cool texture finish - check it out!

Well it's cool to me, shut up.

even the stuff you call "boring" is great, dude- I sometimes find a listless scribble I did years ago and see something in it that warrants another go. The way you paint things is unique- I can see it especially in that owlboy painting, you somehow manage to keep it impressionistic while keeping the forms solid, I can't figure out how you do it, its amazing.

So I saw this video by Sinix Design and figured I'd give the skully buggy fun fun time a go - hey, shit, if it helps with construction, right?

Turns out that skulls are fucking retarded. They're just thrown together with fused bone, shit is all over the place and I didn't get much in the way of references for angles I just struggled with, and most of the anatomical shortcuts I gleaned came courtesy of the video.

Might give it another go later, this took way too long as is.

Cheers bruv, I actually kept onto the sketchbook I finished this time instead of throwing it away so we're more or less on the same page there, ey?

For the colour bukkake painting, I went through this phase where I fetishized the shit out of neon lights and stained glass windows and was trying to incorporate that saturated chroma into pictures as a whole. Without any reference so it was just a bunch of romantic concepts.

Kinda love the look so I'm sticking with it.

Speaking of Owlboy, you gotta post your process for that gif you worked on for like a week, dude. Should be posting this in your thread that I'm stalking BUT YOU GET THE MESSAGE EITHER WAY.

Yo dude I am really digging these sketchbook pages. The linework on them is really neat and those folds in the clothing is great and those crabs were awesome. Also just really enjoying the pages filled with disconnected drawings of various figures. Very cool insights into things you draw leading up to or beside the usual excellent full color insane compositions and stuff.

Response to Sketchbook, Lintire 2016-11-17 09:01:12

Horses and 70s Elton John.

There's a method to this madness. Brother wants me to draw up a logo for his 360 noscope clan and it's called like Free Ponies. So it's either Elton John horses or the alternative, and that's not a real choice.

Normally I wouldn't let a little thing like not knowing how to draw horses stop me from just drawing horses anyway, but the idiot went ahead and brought money into it.

I'll draw whatever the fuck anyone wants me to if they just ask but bringing money into it is a mistake, I freeze the fuck up. Can't handle that kind of responsibility.

At 11/16/16 05:30 PM, JackDCurleo wrote: Yo dude I am really digging these sketchbook pages. The linework on them is really neat and those folds in the clothing is great and those crabs were awesome. Oh man I loved drawing those crabs. Should draw more crabs. Robert De Niro spiders.

Because he's crabby.

And hey, brother, good to see you around! I did intend to branch out from just contour stuff, but my inking went disastrously (sorry AleBorgo, I can't care enough to suffer through a hundred disasters for inking to finally click) and value intensive stuff apparentally requires a space shuttle full of fixatives and graphite blenders and mechanical pencils and moleskin binders and putty erasers and man that's a lot to deal with from my HB pencil and rubber combo.

So for now it's more clean lines with slight hatching.

Oh and I'm lurking in your thread always, just yet to come up with something more interesting than "Hello good work I like it". Give me time.

Human figures are the lowest of the low filler space for me right now. At least as I draw them as they are now, the full body front on shots, you see shit like below then it's because I left this way too late and it's 2:30am and I'm tired. 2:50 now, fuck.

So the little red power ranger down in the bottom right is an avatar for Crimson Daggers a damn good art forum so if you want to look around, definitely recommend this to anyone with work angled towards naturalism, concept art, commercial illustration etc.

I don't give a fuck about power rangers, it does not matter to me at all. I like those Japanese superhero designs anyway, with the kamen riders and super sentai and all that.

So I'm not a photographer and my phone camera is pretty inadequate for any shots but I've been taking my own reference photos anyway and I may as well show them off.
Shot 1 - Supermoon
Shot 2 - High Tide Coast

There was a supermoon and I fucking swear it was a lot bigger in person.

More filler shit.

I mean it's not complete filler, you do glean a little in the way of drapery and proportions, but there's no CHALLENGE, no EXCITEMENT. The whole point of taking up the sketchbook and pencil over just digital work was to make stuff that was a lot of fun to flick through, but here I am just bashing out referenced figures.

Oh well. Time enough to address that later. This is really just a way of killing time until I enlist anyway.

So the first three figures are all from a book of 1860-1880 photographs. This doesn't matter, except that I picked up that a pocket watch chain is called an "Albert". A Prince Albert is also the name for a penile piercing. These are the things you must know to become a Professional ©®™. Field irrelevant.

And on the subject of olden time hijinks, I finally got around to searching for some dude from the decrepit, long forgotten age of 2006 who used to costume as a mad scientist, sing half self-aware songs appealing to the aimlessly mad youth and made a big show of it. I remembered him being pretty good and it was haunting me for a bit.

Dr Steel and his toys - honestly not bad.

In the same way that Evanescence could be described as " honestly not bad", a half added way to deflect internal judgement and slap on justification.

I said I was totally going to do more buildings. They're fun, you can just bullshit most of it.

There was going to be six, but I got bored so I just made that last one larger because fuck it.

"But doesn't that show more detail?". Nah. Not really. You don't need it. Buildings are so jam packed with detail that you can imply or ignore as much as you want and you'll still be left with a shitload of visual busyness to engage the eye.

Now natural landscapes of fields and stuff that rely on pools of light and decent rendering to carry them, I just flounder. Can't render for shit honestly. I just throw more shit in the picture and call it a day.

Oh well.

On today's menu is... 3 or so hours of lip practice, and the first attempts at using the watercolour paints and the calligraphy pen I didn't mention. Went fucking terribly.

Not in a "holy shit how do I even fuck up this badly I have shamed my ancestors and myself" way at least, it was at least fun to do. Didn't buy a palette or anything so I made do with an old medicinal measuring cup and an ice cube tray to see how many ways one person can fuck up mixing watercolours.
I'll mess around with it from time to time. Also hey, two whole pages done in one day.

Oh, I was pissed off with how bad my mouths were so I grinded the shit out of them. Originally I was going to cram the page but after 3 hours of sketching in the stinking heat of an Australian Christmas I decided no. Tried to incorporate both HB and 2B. Baby steps.

In other news, made a paltry attempt to promote the little collab with a news post but after a lot of searching, in soul and in google, I decided I can't do that front pagey promotey thing because I'm an asshole.

Oh, for some reason Youtube recommended this to me out of the blue and it's a pretty rad album so feel free to check it out.

Boring one today.

I got the day off, too, I just spent it all drinking my ass off, eating green tea ice cream and playing Aquaria. Aquaria isn't even good, you just float around a big empty map farting fireballs at everything while this hideous fucking soundtrack blares into your ears that's about twice the pitch I'd ever want.

I ended up just turning it off and throwing on podcasts for background noise. Let's not even talk about the "singing" being about as comfortable to listen to as nails on a fucking chalkboard.

There is this one bit I liked where you transform into a fish but it's got a human face and it is the dumbest fucking thing I've seen in a while: check it out.

Yeah I decided that making things neat was boring and that it was high time I just fucked up these sketches to analyze mistakes and patterns and ALL THAT GOOD STUFF.

So I went looking for a sort of 30 day art challenge thing to keep things spicy in the bedroom and the one I found is by far the most boring possibly unambitious list I've ever seen. But I couldn't be fucked searching for another so we're stuck with this.

But oh well. Last time I did this it was a Monstergirl thang and that worked out alright until I got bored of that too. Yeah.

Day 1: Self-Portrait. Don't worry ladies, I might look like a sagging ogre manchild, but I got a small dick to make up for it. Mhmm. Don't crowd around all at once.
