The only character I like specifically from all of Toriyama's work is Robo, though I am a fan of the golems in the DW/DQ series. I care little for any particular individual in the Dragon Ball universe. If I had to choose one, then Krillin, but, really, none of them.

Same here.
Pikkon is my favorite, despite the few times he actually appears on the show. Also he has the best theme in the series.

Probably because Piccolo had abandonment issues about being a reincarnation. He had all of the old Piccolo's memories, but was emotionally detached from them. He still wanted to rule the earth for a while, but only because he thought humans were too prone to destroying themselves. And that year he spent training Gohan did mellow him out, though he'd never admit it. On top of that... he did kill Goku, but because of Goku's sacrifice, he probably didn't get much satisfaction.
Those are just guesses, Dragon Ball was light on overt character development.
