I generally avoid 2D fighters, even though the more stylish ones have me interested enough to try them.
2D fighters usually have the biggest following.
Mortal Kombat. The gore and the music are the best.
I like fighting games. They help me to get rid of stress after hard day at work. Most of the time I play games online at http://www.kizi2games.net/. My favs are Battle Gear 2.5, Goku City Defender and Zombocalypse.
I haven't played any of the more recent ones (post-Dreamcast) butSoul Edge/Soul Calibur. They have an almost cinematic feeling to them. I'd rank Tekken second and Virtua Fighter third.

i like the alternate gameplay modes. wish they'd incorporate guilty gear isuka's roboky mk2 factory mode into the rest of the series.
Great choice. I played one of the Guilty Gear series before, I remember a guy with a living shadow. He reminded me of Venom a little bit.
turrn him into more of an e-121 phi from sonic battle.. cusomizable movesets and stuff...

because guilty gear's got a character named venom but he isnt the same character as zato.
zato's got a monster named eddie hiding in his shadow. i'd assume you're referring to him.
It must be Zato. I remember the shadow attacking people, like Venom from Marvel, can do. The attack go under the enemy and from below them. Good times.
JOJO'S BIZARRE ADVENTURE: HERITAGE FOR THE FUTURE- aside from stand system and the ability to stop time, the game is ace with short hops, rolls, and how fun and fast the game is. also this:

king of fighters 98 and XIII are fun as hell.
chose these games in particular because most of them reward you for good neutral play (jojo to a lesser extent, since that game is kinda like a grounded Marvel vs.) and the fact no archetype suffers from a games base design. (theres a reason why grapplers in SNK games fair better then grapplers from Capcom titles).
skullgirls and guilty gear is up there, but they're not really my fav. I really like johnny though.
mortal kombat and injustice are for simpletons .

Marvel vs Capcom 2 because of the variety of characters and the countless mix you can make in your team. Runner ups are Skullgirls, Smash Bros and any game that plays like Power Stone whether it's the actual game itself or not.
My top 3 are all the obvious ones...

Soul Caliber and Mortal Kombat are both great series. Hard to pick just one.
