Obese and Smokers banned surgery

Obese people will be routinely refused operations across the NHS, health service bosses have warned, after one authority said it would limit procedures on an unprecedented scale. Hospital leaders in North Yorkshire said that patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or above – as well as smokers – will be barred from most surgery for up to a year amid increasingly desperate measures to plug a funding black hole. The restrictions will apply to standard hip and knee operations.

It is right to treat obese and smokers this way? Should they really be refused operations?

Obese people need hip and knee replacements because of the added stress on their joints from the weight. Smokers need heart and lung transplants from the cancerous shit that they willingly put in their bodies.

Unless you're old and getting fat, should be denied the replacement unless you can pay for it yourself and the cause is just obesity. Don't give organs to drug addicts.

As a smoker this should only apply if whatever I'm taken to hospital for is directly because of my smoking. If I broke my leg or something to refuse me surgery is completely daft. That like saying I can't get on a plane to another country because I like the colour green.

not entirely, smoking is going to make you heal slower and less healthy in general, making the smoker a weaker choice on who to medically help in the first place.

i know obese people and my dad died a handful of years ago from cancer caused by smoking.

if you're doing things to negatively effect your health and your habits make your healing or practicing medicine on you less successful than someone without those vices, you shouldn't be on equal footing.

Dunno, but obese and smokers die young so I think the costs at least even out. I think a study said they cost far less than regular people but don't quote me on that.
