Adding to that, often it's from a physical examination like the one described that males learn that they have only one testicle when in fact they should have two (hence the term "balls". Don't know the exact numbers, but from time to time it does happen that one or both testicles aren't descending (or "dropping").
So yeah, it's weird as hell if a doctor suddendly tells you to drop your pants and starts feeling your balls (I wonder why they never tell you before what they are going to do???), but it's a really important examination.
