Okay, my first post on Newgrounds, my first try at the Draw with Jazza challenge, andmy first time ever entering a drawing competition! Exciting times.
I hope the deadline of the 28th is at midnight that day, otherwise I'm all out of luck. Just finished the piece, but it is in traditional media and the light here isn't good enough to take a decent picture. Posting the final product will have to wait until tomorrow's sunshine.
I was first going to enter the beginners category, because I only recently (since a few months) started drawing again. The last time I did any serious drawing or painting was in high school, 8 years ago (time flies). However, I'm so pleased with the result I've decided to try my luck in the open category. Fingers crossed!
It was more of a challenge than I thought it was going to be. I'm on holiday visiting family right now and (surprisingly) that left me very little time to work on my idea. It didn't much help that I completely changed what I was going to do halfway throuh the process. Fortunately, the final idea worked out well - at least I think so. Though once it's up, I would love feedback! Any and all suggestions welcome, I'm here to learn.
I chose:
- Hairy professor
- Windy maze
When I heard 'hairy professor' I immediately thought of the beautiful women Alfons Mucha used to paint with excessively long, flowing hair. I've always wanted to draw something in that style so I took my chance; a professor with a giant pile of hair, being tossled by wind.
The final piece I created is an advertisment poster for a university of 'extraordinary arts,' with 'arts' entailing both the drawing/painting and magical kind. Our hairy professor is sitting at a demon altar/magical desk, drawing, while wind is tugging at her hair and her magical, fiery quill. The background of the poster is a twisting maze.
First I wanted to make a map of the campus of this university, with the professor visible in one of the rooms and the campus itself as a maze, but that didn't leave enough room for details. After spending way too long trying to design a decent floorplan I switched gears and came up with the poster idea.
Here is the starting sketch for the final piece (background maze not yet finished and barely visible). Tomorrow I'll upload some process pictures, so those who are interested can see the maze-like path I followed to get here ;)
