You see....this is why the Tea Party needs to get their act together and give up on the GOP. It'd be the best thing for American politics. They and their paranoid ruralite voters could finally break off the GOP forming their own party, which would surprisingly be rather large, and then the conservative democrats(ie: Bart Stupak) can finally leave the DNC which could then remove the veil covering their "socialist" label and both conservatives and liberals could finally have two parties completely under control while a slightly larger, moderate GOP made things competitive. Nobody would have to hold back their thoughts on issues and we'd actually have transparent gov't.

It won't happen though; it's too good for the country...

I like your view on this, and I've thought similar things. We were never really meant to be a 2 party system, we just kinda distilled down to it. That's where a lot of the problem lies. Everyone is going the safety in numbers route.

If Donald Trump can get high ratings, anyone can.

Then again, that's more simply because he's so rich and can do anything he wants.

In a (very) surprising twist, Kevin McCarthy has dropped out of the race to be Speaker. It's a job nobody wants.

edit: presumably no one good will fill that slot.

To put this into perspective to give some idea of how big of a deal this is:

"Rep. Tom Rooney, R-Fla., said the meeting opened, Republicans said the Pledge and then McCarthy stood up and took himself out of the race. The prohibitive favorite said he didn't want members to take arrows for voting for him and that he was taking himself out of contention.

Speaker Boehner then immediately moved to adjourn the meeting. Rooney said there was "total shock" and some members were audibly crying.
...
Rep. Charlie Dent, R-Pa., said Ryan was probably the only lawmaker who could get the necessary 218 votes in the caucus. Ryan, however, has already issued a statement that he won't run.

Dent, one of the few remaining moderate Republicans in the House and a close ally of Boehner, said lawmakers might need to form a coalition with Democrats to find a consensus speaker.

Republicans are divided and "anyone with eyes can see it," Dent said, adding that he didn't believe Boehner would leave until a new speaker is elected and so he "might be here a while."

Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, R-Calif., said Republicans may need a "caretaker speaker" or someone who will be speaker until new elections can be held in January 2017. They'd have to be a senior member who would not run for a full term though."

Here is another article on the matter:

Obviously Boehner is now in a very difficult position. He's also mentioned he's not going to leave now until a replacement has been found.

I like how some people attributed his drop out to some of the stupid shit he said like that the Benghazi committee was done to bring down Hillary Clinton. Well to begin with that isn't true, it was done to dirty up Obama but HIllary willingly took the blame so that Obama wouldn't have to deal with it. The GOP isn't that forward looking.

Besides, the people in the lead in the GOP are the ones who say the stupidest shit.

Still, I never thought things would get this bad. Maybe McCarthy dropping out is the establishments attempt at bringing down the TEA party judging by how desperate they sound.

Maybe this is a scheme to keep him in the job. Everybody else will decline to take it, and force Boehner to remain as House Speaker.

And go through all the stress he was trying to get away from? He's got the Democrats and the Tea Party coming at him from both sides.

All those endless proceedings and investigations and committees turned into ammunition against Hillary after the 2012 election. You didn't have to be a genius political prognosticator to deduce the significant probability of her deciding to run for 2016. The GOP leadership isn't stupid in that regard. It's not a coincidence that right around this time you heard politicians and pundits start saying shit like "Ready For Hillary."

edit: it was kinda obvious since at least the middle of 2013.

But you're right, this wasn't why he dropped out of the race. The real reason, from what I've gathered, is the fact that he had an affair with a fellow Rep.

It doesn't simply boil down to money.
