I constantly see a lot of threads out there along the lines of "I am a beginner, where do I start?", well here is your answer! These challenges are open enough to be accessible to a beginner or a pro, and if we get enough people to jump on board there can be a great back and forth between people of all skill levels. It's a fantastic way to learn, not to mention rewarding.

If you missed the last thread, the idea is pretty simple. You have two weeks to animate something to the theme of the challenge. There is no prize at the moment, unless you count growth as an animator!

wink wink nudge

In the future I may do a small reward for the strongest piece. Especially if this thread takes off and we get a lot of participants. Anyways, on to business.

There are no rules about FPS or size, but I may compile these into a single movie at some point, if you want to have yours included go for 24 FPS and 1280x720 dimensions. I'm also using Cs3

The current challenge is Action!
Think fast paced movement and quick camera cuts that emphasize the actions. A good example is Metropolis Circuit by rtil: http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/399107. It's flashy and busy, but not so much that you cant follow it. Pacing is important to consider as well.

Starting today, it will end the 24th.

This post is reserved for past challenges and their submissions.

Challenge #1: "Surprise", the challenge was to animate a character being surprised by something.
2 submissions total:
ShadeMachine: http://bbsimg.ngfiles.com/17/25637000/ngbbs55e9b8ce2c73c.gif
Chillycheese: http://www.newgrounds.com/dump/item/812c3146482bb4eb2c28df1f812e6826

Neither of us finished, so I increased the time on the challenges. But regardless if you finish or not it's great practice.

Nice man! It's cleaned up well and it really came together. There's a couple areas that you forgot to fill in but that's a small detail. Kudos on the walk cycle of the dino, it's got a bit of sneakiness to it.

Good to have you entering again! Looks like your taking on a bigger project this time. I like the shots you chose, definitely liking where it's going.

As for me this is what I've got so far: http://www.newgrounds.com/dump/item/0aeebbb8e0420cb31ac6dc5b74e46a45
It's really rough and I kept changing what I wanted the tomato racer to look like so its a bit inconsistent there. I've decided to to a full rough animatic first this time rather than jumping into it like the last one. Definitely working out for the better.

Hm, I cant say how to knock them out fast, but I can give you a couple tips.

Keep your linework on a separate layer than the color, that way you don't have to carefully avoid your lines when coloring. When you finish you can merge the layers. This is a part of having an overarching process. If you jump back and forth between polishing your linework your coloring and your shading you'll slow yourself down and the finished piece wont look as cohesive.

Do thumbnail sketches of your backgrounds. It's easier to get to a finished piece faster if you know how the composition should be laid out. You're animatic already is kind of like a sketch so your pretty strong on that front. But always consider alternatives, you'll surprise yourself with really interesting shots. Remember: Foreground, middleground and background. Working those 3 spaces together can really step up your environment game.

You're background looks pretty architectural, if you want some depth to it think about using vanishing points to create perspective. This will also give your background a lot of movement and make it dynamic as opposed to static. I dont know how familiar you are with vanishing points, so here's a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pfG_2-x0lII

For color, choose a palette that reflects the mood. You're setting up this scene where a gritty bar fight happens, I'd suggest using a cooler neutral palette, and maybe some warm lights here and there to contrast it. A good thing to remember is that as things push further away from the viewer they tend to get cooler and darker in color.

Here's a good example from Hey Arnold: http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lvafemkAqH1qkae1r.jpg You can see how the artist is using 3 point perspective (the buildings are pushing away from the viewer on three planes) to create a space, the palette is cool and a little moody, the shots of warm color in the lights bring out the coolness in everything else.

Don't worry about speed, and don't worry about getting right the first time, these are all just tips so don't stress about trying to work everything in at once. If you want to really improve your backgrounds take a look at some artists work that you really like and try to mimic what they are doing. Copying someone else's work can be really educational.

Edit: And one more thing, I'd turn the smoothing down to about 25 on your brush.

Haha you're very welcome! I'm glad it means so much to you :')

It's refreshing to see you really working hard and motivated to improve!

If you've got a camera, keep it with you when you go places, take pictures of things that interest you. Even better keep a sketchbook with you and draw your environment. Treat them like studies, if you were to draw a cup on a table you would be focused on really making that cup pop from the page. Do the same with your environment studies. Push and pull into the picture plane. If you take the bus that is a great time to draw cause you've got nothing better to do anyways! Here are some tips on creating depth in your backgrounds, lotta good stuff: http://www.finearttips.com/2014/09/6-ways-to-create-depth-in-your-landscape-painting/

Wow man, great improvement, color me impressed!

Couple of suggestions: The backgrounds are very nicely rendered. They have a lot of dimension and fit well in the space you've made good use of gradients, though I would keep the shadows under the tables a solid translucent color opposed to a gradient, if you want to soften the edge of the shadow convert it to a movieclip and add a bit of blur. The gradients used on the walls of the interior are kind of flattening the image. Think about the entire interior of the bar. I would maybe even draw out the bar in a blueprint style or in some kind of way that you can get the full scope of it. Then you can really think about adding props and how the fight will move through the bar. As of now the inside feels a bit sterile.

Also I would suggest adding a bit more spice to the opening background. You've got a really nice base to work from for your opening shot. All it needs is a little zing to take it up a couple notches. Think about adding atmosphere, the piece of paper floating through the wind is definitely the right idea. Maybe add some dust floating through the air and some distant feint mountains at the horizon. Also a vignette and letterbox can pump up the drama. Also with your clock tower in the distance try taking the color of your sky and lowering the alpha of your brush to 30 or 40 and just paint over the clocktower, it will add some atmospheric perspective and bring the foreground closer. Also if you really want to push things back in the background think about creating overlapping shapes on your ground plane. Things very far way may be obscured by a tuft of grass or small hill in the foreground and middleground.

One more thing, I would suggest making your shadows closer to blue. You dont want them to actually BE blue but get them to that sweet spot where they feel cool in relation to the light.

That's all I got! Sorry if it was long winded. Overall really nice improvement, let me know if you want anything clarified!

Nice! The details are really pulling it together now. I think you might want to alter you color palette a bit. Push your warm and cool contrast. I took your entrance and shifted the colors a bit to show you what I mean.

Thanks dude! Feel free to join in if you like. You don't have to commit to finish or anything. I wont be able to work on mine again until monday, I probably wont be able to finish by the deadline. I'm liking the way this is coming out though and I dont want to rush it. I'll just make my next animation simple and short.

Hey Chilly! It's good to see that you're still around :)
I always like seeing old NG pals from back in the day!

I had to double check, and it doesn't look like we were ever in a collab together, but we must have crossed paths with @Rudy and @Nicholas-Deary 's Time Trials.

If I ever find some free time, and feel inspired by the theme I'd love to take part! I can't make any commitments right now, but hopefully some day I can take part.

Wow! Hey Noodle! It's funny, I come back on Newgrounds from time to time and I always check up on those guys along with some other NG buddies like @fawx or @ngmastah. Not many are active any more sadly but it's cool to see a fellow veteran!

There's plenty of room for more participants dude, if you ever find the time don't hesitate! Besides there's no real commitment to complete, I myself haven't finished the last challenge, nor does it look like I'm going to be able to finish the current one. So definitely keep in it in mind!

The next one will start on tuesday the 29th. Glad to have you on board!

I've been so busy lately between work and renovating my home that I've barely had the time to work on my animations sadly. But it looks like we'll have 5 or so participants in the next one, I'm psyched to see what you all do!

Tomorrow I'll choose the winner, so post what you've got! I'll judge by these criteria: How well it fits the theme, level of completion, and execution of animation as well as artwork. The winner of this round will be granted honorary award status by @TomFulp . The winner will also judge the participants of the next round with me and help select a winner (if they choose to)
