In a middle-class neighborhood of San Antonio, Texas, a 41-year-old man, Gilbert Flores, was shot dead by police in his driveway. A video shows the shirtless man raising his hands up to the air, to signify that he was surrendering, before he was shot at least twice in the stomach. The police arrived to the man's house in response to a domestic disturbance. A cop said the man was armed with a knife but did not charge towards officers and the video does not seem to show any weapon.

With many controversial police shootings happening in America in the past, this one is especially troubling.

Was this self defense, a bad mistake, or a murderous execution?

Can you post a link to the video? It's hard to determine whether the use of lethal force was justified without actually seeing what happened...

Well, it looks like the guy was acting pretty erratically in the beginning of the video, but apparently once he saw them point a gun at him, he stopped and threw up both of his hands. There was about a 2 second pause after he put his hands up before they opened fire on him, so it couldn't have been a reflex (unless he made some sudden movement that wasn't caught by the camera - the footage was taken from a considerable distance away which makes it difficult to tell if this were the case.) Doesn't look to me like lethal force was justified in this case.

There is no question that most people who are shot dead by police did something wrong prior to being shot, but it's just that sometimes the reaction by the police officer(s) is out of line. Of course we need to know more about this story, but it sounds really bad, and is something that happens a lot in this country.

The problem with all these articles specifically mentioning race makes it seem as if the problem is with the police is racism, not corruption, brutality, poor training, the "blue shield" making sure cops aren't held accountable for their actions, and the fact that police departments frequently hire people who aren't cut out for the job. Cops are taught to assume everyone is a criminal, and a lot of cops are ex-military that treat their town like it's a warzone and citizens are all potential insurgents. If you can't properly assess a threat and treat citizens like human beings you shouldn't have a job as a police officer. I'd go into about how they're supposed to be protecting people, although the supreme court ruled they have no obligation to protect those in danger or even respond to 911 calls, so really they don't need to do anything other than bring in money for the state. Cops around here won't do shit to pursue real criminals or help victims of violent crime, but they'll set up "seatbelt checks" and perform illegal searches all the time. There's a lot of probleme with police departments in the US that won't ever be solved. I could rant about the police for days, but I won't bother. Basically, fuck the police.
