Rations (MRE's), yeah. Rent, no. I never had to pay rent for living in the barracks.

You take home about $20 000 a year. It's pretty shitty.

That's about right, but that $20k is what I'm pocketing after all the other payments are figured in. I actually net in closer to 24k a year.

Plus on top of that from what I hear it's extremely depressing/lonely. If you're joining the military to "become happy" and "make friends" you're not looking to the right place.

Pretty much. But then again I'm really introverted so it depends on the person.

My friend tried general camp (lifers) after being in the reserves/cadets and he quickly changed his life path. He said the people were horrible, it was the most agonizing experience he has ever had. Most annoying fucks he has ever had to deal with.

Sounds right. But there are some awesome people in the mix too. Also lol cadets.

You're still going to spend some of it. IDC. You may walk away with $10 000 after a year. AT BEST.

Obviously I'm going to spend some. But judging from what you've said about your position, I'm not worse off.

Well good for you, I haven't been away except to see family for seven years. I haven't spent more than three nights away from home in twelve years. I've got a mom with a master's degree supporting me and my sister on about a third of what you make. Get a fridge, start spending wisely, and either deal with the fact that people are people or blow your head off.

You start at the bottom and work your way up to the top. It ain't easy and not everyone makes it that far, but unless you try, you never will.

Fucker, you could hitchhike out west and build a house of sticks, fish and hunt and forage for food, etc. But you don't. There's people who do, but most people don't. Including me.

Know why?

Because, although I would enjoy living with not another human for 100 miles, I'm bound to human greed. I want a nice house one day, a nice car, nice stuff.

Don't blame it on society. It's you and I as individuals.

Eat a weiner.

I've done this, I hitch hiked around western Canada and ended up being a bum in Vancouver. Quickly you learn that having no money results in blistered feet/empty stomach/tired/sad/angry. When you steal from stores and security stops you, you throw your stolen merchandise that you NEED in their face when you get cornered at the property's edge. It's lame. I hate it. The only reason they don't arrest you/charge you with theft is sympathy.

Unless you have tons of money saved up/this is a vacation, it's gay. I eventually found a youth program that covered my ass for the duration of my homelessness/sleeping outside. They provided me with food/fresh socks/help. Was great...

I make a good amount of money, i make sure to take time off at least twice a year and over christmas/new years to go somewhere with friends or family, to steal a phrase from @BrenTheMan "I work to live, not live to work"
